To make a comparison it is like TomTom/Tourguide addon in WoW (except without the arrow pointing), I no longer get frustrated spending an hour trying to find something or someone or visiting a website to tell me where to go anyway.
I don't care if anyone says it makes it too easy, because I like to follow the story and everyone can use it.
I'm fairly new to the game, but have a lifetime sub can someone explain traits and destiny points, because even though I can find out what each virtue does I don't see a reason to kill loads of wolfs or spiders just to get more resistance. Could I postpone that til level 50 or find a group to do it?

Why'd you buy a lifetime sub if you just now started? Aren't they like $200+?
But It still doesn't tell you that you have to bow to the Blue Lady!
If you know you like the game, the lifetime option makes good sense.
The game is going to be around at least five more years, barring something really crazy happening. Every year that you subscribe costs $180. So buying the subscription earlier rather than later makes the most sense. I wish I'd spent the money a long time ago, rather than waiting until last month.
Regarding the topic at hand, though: I agree that the guide is really great. It's one of the best implementations -- if not THE best -- I've seen anywhere, and definitely reduces the number of times you'd want to go to a third party website for info.
At first I was resistant to using it, but I was on one of my alts last night in Moria and decided to start using it. I think I'm in love with it now, it makes questing so much quicker and more efficient. And I don't really feel like I'm "cheating" since I'll still keep it turned off for my main.
I'm used to the Questhelper addon in WoW, and I don't like the quest guide of LOTRO at all...
- You can't track more than 5 quests
- So you need to decide which quests to track, which means you need to read them in order to know which ones are in your vicinity
- The quest guide on the map is just poorly implemented : tooltips are useless, the quest listing obscures some part of the map
- Some quests don't work in the quest guide
I've just started with LOTRO, and I didn't play it before the guide was released. The guide can be a good help, sometimes, but it's nowhere near a "stroke of genius", it's not very well implemented. And how come do we need a quest guide, to start with ? WoW has no such a feature (in the basic UI), so it shouldn't be mandatory. I'm playing LOTRO without the guid, atm, and it helps me enjoy the universe and lore, rather than doing and checking quests like a laundry list...
Isn't that the point of quests and the game in general?

He didn't question whether or not the $200+ was a good price or not. He was wondering why someone who just started, and who doesn't even know anything about the traits and destiny points, would blow that kinda cash on a game that he doesn't even really know if he likes or not.
To answer your question, "yes" you should do the traits/deeds.
I waited, which was sort of fine, but had to go back to grind out several of them. One of them that I was glad to come back to at higher level were the Sarnur Trolls. at least I could solo them. At the appropriate level they are very hard. You could postpone them but I doubt most people will want to come and kill Hendrovals with you. Up to you though.
But if you are going to do more difficult things, the traits/deeds will help immensley.
The destiny points you can use to spend purchasing buffs or increased gain in xp or increased gain in armor, remove dread from death, etc.
The buffs you purchase are temporary so you can have more morale or power or armor but it will be for 15, 25 and 35 (or whatever the amounts are) intervals.

As said before, it works out to far more economical in the long run. I have a general inkling about a game before I play it. Even though I didn't enjoy LotRO that much, I still think that $200 for a lifetime sub is more than worth it.
I was against the quest helper when I first heard about it since I hated the feature in AoC and WAR. But now that Ive tried it I think its really good (especially in Moria). It doesnt feel as much hand holding as the systems in the other games and you have to manage and think about how you use the helper .
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
I don't know if you unlocked monster play yet but once you do you can spend destiny points on upgrades for your monster character.
Don't waste DP on your non-monster player. The temporary buffs aren't worth it anyway imo.
Most people wait with the virtues until they're 50+ because no one likes a mindless grind and the higher your level the faster the grind.
Like someone already mentioned they will help you alot if you have the time and will to grind them at early levels. Most of them are useless at lower levels though and since you can't level them higher than 3-4 or so you might as well wait til at least level 30 'ish
Yes, its quite nice, and no, it does not give you the XYZ of things, except for quest turn ins, and thats very nice.

Hay now, sometimes the extra rest XP is nice, and the movement buff. but yes, DP is best spent on your monster. Rawr!
