Anyone else besides me waiting for a Dune MMORPG? What a perfect IP for this genre. Just think of all the Atreides i should be killing while playing as the evil Harkonen

At one time i considered Dune to be the worst movie and game i have ever seen or played,so no it would be a laughing stock of a MMORPG.Sorry i cannot agree, but that title has stuck in my mind for geesh MANY years,It was just plain awful.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You do know that Dune is one of the all time classic sci fi books. Judging an IP off of a bad movie recreation instead of the 6 original books that Frank Herbert wrote seems very very wrong.
Granted the movie was terrible itself but mildly entertaining due to its corniness the Dune games themselves have been rather good. The first dune game was one of the very first cd based games ever back in the very early ninties. The second Dune game pretty much defined the entire RTS genre for the next 20 years. Dune RTS games for the Sega Genesis and PC have alwas been good. The Dune universe presented in novels have been a good read as well.
Hey put down the mouse and pick up a book sometime!
The Dune series is outstanding. Even the ones not written by Frank are pretty good.
There is plenty there for a mmorpg but I would hate to see a developer ruin another fantastic universe with their simplistic approach to these games.
Definitely do not want a Dune mmorpg.
Developers have consistently proven themselves incapable of respecting the source material of beloved IPs in favor of making the same bullshit mob grind in game after game (see SWG, LotRo, WAR, the list goes on) and I don't want one of the best novels ever written to devolve into 'kill ten sandtrout,' or worse, have them concoct a ludicrous story where thousands of players are 'the one' like Muad'dib.
MMOs are piss poor at recreating pre-existing stories/canon, so no thanks. Won't play it.
I agree with this.
Although, if they do implement, please don't forget the sandworms. Being able to be instantly killed by being dinner for a huge worm is always awesome.

Dune is a huge inspiration to me. Frank Herbert truly played the role of a God and created a world with attention to every detail. The movies were horrible, and I've never played a Dune game. A Dune MMORPG would probably be horrible due to everyone having to be the hero as a previous poster mentioned. I also would expect that the majority of players would want to side with the fremen, so making it a factional game wouldn't work well.
I would rather see a MMORPG that was influenced by Dune than a Dune MMO itself. I tend to be dissinterested in games based off of existing IPs. Make your own IP for your own game.
Atm the company that holds the right to Dune is squezing as much money out of the IP as they possible can. They became greedy after the TV series was made by Sci Fi channel.
They grounded the PnP RPG into the ground because of a technicality that enabled them to renegotiate the deal just before the books were to hit the stores and they demanded a million dollars for the right to publish a table top RPG!
You also see them put out book after book with the Herbert name on them that keep on squeezing anything good out of the IP.
Herbert was a brilliant author (even though he didnt start until very late in his life) but his ideas are being exploited now by greedy people and I dont think any sane MMO company should touch it with a ten foot pole. . . .
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
Condemning an IP because someone did a horrible immitation of it in a movie is just dumb. Obviously you are judging something without reading the original material, while relying on the bad movie as your reference.
I think it could have great possibilities, then again it all depends on who would do it. If a developer was dumb enough to base it on the movie it could be a disaster.
It would be my dream MMO, but I dont think anyone could pull it off. Better to not do it at all than fuck up such a masterful work of literature.
The IP is amazing indeed, but any ideas on how it would be transfered to an MMO format ?
I haven't read much of the books so i'm a bit clueless, but I know the Harkonnen and Atreides (and Ordos? I played battle for dune, one of my favourite rts', but I heard Ordos weren't in the books) have been fighting since, like, forever, I'd imagine a huge territory based war game, trying to control as much of Arrakis as possible at the end of a month and getting stuff unlocked based on how much you have.
Somewhat like planetside.
Any ideas ? speculation? *shrug*
<Welcome to my world>
I have become a bit jaded against MMO's that attempt to cash in on any existing IP. SWG just did not "feel" like the Star Wars movies in any shape or form. LOTRO, while a good game, still does not really make me fell like I am part of the Ring Trilogy. I think that the bar is just too high for any game to really make a good mark if based upon a story that many have already built to grand heights within their own and not the authors imaginations. IP's that are actually created from a totally new perspective are what is needed and not attempts to cash in the success of the form books and/or movies. Therefore, I would really not wish to see a Dune MMO....at least not yet.

OMGz, another thing blizzthieves stoleded!?!?!?
Heh. Seriously though, I don't think Dune would offer anything all that new to the MMORPG realm and the people that even know anything about Dune are only a fraction of the MMO playerbase. Hence, I don' think it would be much of a draw. If you have great devs and deep pockets you can turn any setting into an seccessful MMO. But I just don't see it happening.
If, and that's a big IF, the proper respect could be paid to the IP and a system could be made to properly handle the faction system and all the intricacies of the politics and the story, then yes, a Dune MMOG would be a dream come true. However, I have zero faith in mainstream MMOG developers to do anything but try and make another WoW, and the Dune IP just wouldn't work in a mainstream type MMOG. There was an attempt at a Dune MMOG by Cryo Networks back around 2000/2001 called Dune Generations, but that obviously didn't happen...

I'm waiting too but the later its made the more likely it will be first person shooter it seems. would love to see the 3 factions and shielding justifying mele combat along with guns in a sci fi game. kind of like kotor
My blog:
The landscape would be really boring.
MMOs really don't need to be based on existing universes although then again it saves a lot of time for the game designers.
