Running Age of Conan at Max Settings

vashisvashis Member Posts: 11

Well to say the least. My computer blows. AoC barely runs on the lowest settings, and slows down with more than 3 enemies  on my screen, plus when I ever try to cross a Bridge, 50% of the time I fall off because my character goes out of control because of my computer.

Here are my settings:

Never upgraded a computer, I would want to know the recommend parts to run AoC on the max settings so I can have a enjoyable experience. I really would love to take a break from consoles, but my computer is stalling that. Any help would be appreciated.

you do know , that high end computer gona cost 5x those shit consoles..everyone hates.. right?

your video card is terrible, and pretty much you need new pc for aoc on max, someone not as lazy as me probably can give you needed parts etc.. just ignore anyone who recommends you getting something else instead of i7 platform

A new graphics card should let you play on high settings, dont really know how CPU intensive AoC is. Im running on low-med settings with a Pentium 4, so i think you're fine there.

I dont know if you have a PCIe 16x port on your motherboard or not, but if you do, spending 100-200$ on a new graphics card should let you play it on max or close to it, depending on resolution.

Maybe one of the Nvidia 8 series video cards might work out.  I'm no expect but one of the main problems I ran into when upgrading my computer was the CPU.  I thought if I buy the biggest and baddest video card of the time I would get awesome results.  Didn't work out that way at all.  My system ended up getting bottled neck by the CPU.  So the end result was I was not using the new video card fully.  Hopefully some of the guys here can guide you better on the selection of a card than I can.

    Good luck.

More like it'll cost him a little more than a PS3...

I wouldn't upgrade anything in your system, I'd just build myself a new one.  Your processor isn't too bad, but for about 500-600 bucks you could build yourself something way better.  Right now your bottle neck is without a doubt your video card.  If you just picked up an Nvidia 260 or a Radeon HD4850/4870, you'd notice a huge bump in performance.

Also, I'd just ignore the above poster, because not everyone has the money to splurge on an i7, and you can run AoC on max settings without any issues with a Phenom II on an AM2+ motherboard.

I have i7 2.6ghx ...4gig ddr3 ram....vista 64....evga nvidia 9800gt. I run good fps most times on near max settings...dx9....For dx10 it slows considerably but keep in mind it is still in test phase in AoC. I'm sure performance will get better on Dx10 settings in future. Still I plan to upgrade to gtx275 or 285. You should be much better with another card like 9800gt...or gtx 260...I think your cpu can handle it...I'm not even sure if AoC is optimized for anything more than dual core.

All you need is a video card.

    My system:

    Amd 5000+ x2 2.6ghz

    4gig ddr2 mem at 800mhz

    260G Harddrive

ATI radion 3850 video with 512 meg ram

So I don't think your system is crappy. I like mine as is, and think you would be happy also with just a new video card.

I can run AOC at high graphics and get about 30-50 fps depending on how many were around me.

So I would suggest one of the cards I am linking depending on your cash flow.

So if I were to purcahse the 1GH Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit, is there anything I would need to purchase for it or my computer?

  • skeaserskeaser Member RarePosts: 4,213

I run AoC at max on DX10 ;1920 x 1200, everything cranked up and on except for the Screen Space Ambient Occlusion Lighting, not for performance reasons, just because I don't like how it looks.

    I use:

    Intel i7 920 2.67GHz, O/C to 2.99GHz

    6 GB DDR3 2000

Dual NVidia GTX 260 core 216s

    EVGA X58 mobo.

Age of Conan runs best on AMD systems.  I would recommend going all AMD, Processor, Motherboard, and Video Card.  For Video Card I would aim for a 4800 series since you need a little more oomf then a 3870 to get the absolute maximum in AoC.

You need a better monitor to make use of that 295 :)

What's interesting about AoC though is it skews ATI so heavily, a 4850 x2 runs it a good 10 fps faster at half the price of a GTX 295

Ive a Intel i7 920, 3.980 MHz, 6 Gig ddr3 1600MHz,  4870 X2, VelociRaptor 10k, SB X-Fi XtremeGamer. No conflicts with any systems parts and Im playing at 1920x1200. And I cant run AoC dx10/dx9 with 60 fps in every instance if Im using max settings. I can see my fps go down to 20 fps in major hubs or if there is alot of things going.

It really depends on if the developers design it with ATIs architecture in mind.  If they do then it will run up to 300% faster then if it wasn't because of the way it processes data.  Its far more effecient then nVidias current offerings.  However, most developers don't want to invest in the procedures to render.

Im running with 4x. Getting alot of "hicks" when I for example spinn my camera in random directions (around my character) in hubs like Tarantia.

Edit; And if I turn AA off I get them as well, not that often.

It is likely you will also need a new power supply unit.  Most manufactured PCs are not given power supplies with upgrading in mind. Check the power needs of any new graphics card and compare it to your current power supply unit.

You will be very pleased with that card and Im sure you can max AoC on that system

I would suggest building a new computer over upgrading. The performance sacrifices you'll make by not upgrading won't make up for the bit of money you'll save, and you'll just be postponing the inevitable.

If you are set on upgrading, we'll need the make and model of your motherboard.
