Explain the Skill Deck to me

Rayx0rRayx0r Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,902

Im trying to figure out the purpose of the rotating "skill deck".  I know that we're restricted to putting a certain number of skills on each bank, but I mean what is the purpose of this design?

Is it only in place to make using and timing skills more challenging?  Maybe i just need to know how to better use it and place my skills, because right now it just seems like some dev threw an idea against a wall and it became one of the major factors that define this game.

It's actually been lovingly referred to as the Tumbler bar

What you do is you set your skills up either horizontally or vertically in the fashion that would have them mesh together the best

Once you get to the double digits (aka Past 9) you'll encounter some skills that get tagged as Openers & Finishers

Yep they have a combo system in the game and that's the Reasoning for the tumbler bar. You put the opener in one spot and the finisher in another and so long as you don't follow through with another Opener or Finisher you'll have blue dots that stack up on the bottom and once the bar is full you can hit a finisher to do varied things whatever the Finisher does.

It's actually a very decent system as you can use the Mouse Scroll wheel to zip across the bar midcombat since I'm FAIRLY certain if it was the old Press 1 2 7 11 buttons thing you'd be dead before getting to 11.

Actually its the most weltought combat engine in MMO history...

You have max 5 skills available at any time, and a total of 30..... in those 30 skills you can smartly setup your tactics...

Many skills give a lot of advantage if followed up by another skill...

Next to that there is the openers and finishers....

This mechanisme perfectly combines fast combat .... and tactial insight...

Create your own combo's and do thing differently then others... Setup your skills for a certain role

If other companies only grasped half of this system they would be copying it all over...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I think that they implemented the system because of the manual aiming and dodging. You should be moving a lot in the game, which would be impossible if you had to choose the right skill from 30-40 available skills at the same time. The 5 skills at a time make choosing the right skill while moving and aiming a lot more manageable. This doesn't mean that it's a bad system though, it's well thought out and fun.

Have to agree, it's a refreshing change to the combat dynamic.

Now i'm no expert, but i have mine set up to do Combo ranged skills, which complete before the mob has closed with me, then mouse wheel to either AoE melee skills if i pull more than 1 mob, or quick fire melee to finish single mobs.

If the mobs are about my level or slightly higher i have time to mix this up a little just for the fun of it. i'm still experimenting with the skills, which gives me something to think about in the game, this can only be a good thing. :)
