Free MMORPG with crafting?

If anyone can direct me to either an entirely free, or a closed/open beta of an MMORPG that has crafting. I'm currently unemployed, and still searching for work, so I unfortunately will not be able to buy World of Warcraft for me and my wife as planned. Hell, it can even be a MUD, so long as the crafting in it is good. I just need something to bide my time till I'm working again and can buy WoW. Please don't say Rubies of Eventide as I've already got burnt out on that game.
SOE makes decent games that appeal to nerds. Their customer service is run by jocks who bully nerds. Wonder why SOE sucks so bad...
