Looking for wonder, uncertainty, and challenging PVE

Hello MMORPG.com; I am a new member and I came here hoping to find a new game that will give me the kind of enjoyment that only an MMO can.

I have been playing MMOs for over 10 years and the only two that have really clicked with me are EQ1 and WoW. I have 150+ days in each. I enjoyed WotLK a lot but don't really want to go back. I just feel "done" with WoW after the short bus experience that was WotLK.  Simply not enough challenge. I did not feel the least bit special or skilled to reach level 80, craft my own epic armor and weapon, farm heroic after heroic etc; it just seemed so EASY.

What I really miss more than anything is the vast, unknown, and dangerous world of EQ in the classic and Kunark days. I have really never found anything like it. I loved how travelling was an ordeal. I loved the huge world where everything was hostile (especially if you were an evil race). I loved how you needed some balls to do dungeons, because if your group messed up getting your stuff back was not trivial. Hell levels, the original Planes, sand giants... the feeling of finally getting the SMR or FBSS...  you get the idea.

I want a game that does not hold your hand; a game that is difficult to get into but rewarding if you put in the time to learn it. One where the path forward is not obvious or easy. I am not against grinding, in fact I like it, but there needs to be more challenge than "how much grinding can you stand?"

I've thought about getting back into EQ1 but the last time I played, which was about 5 years ago, it seemed that if you did not multibox there was little point in playing. I don't really know much about the recent releases except that they seem to be PVP oriented. I want a game that has solid PVE content and progression, and I don't want to be forced to PVP.

Challenging PVE and a big, interesting world that encourages exploration. Oh, and definitely not a game where you buy stuff with real money. I want to earn my levels and equipment, and I want to know that everyone else did too.

This is a very rambly post, I know... thank you for reading and thanks for any suggestions.

Don't think they make em like EQ1  anymore. Casual is where the money is, and so go the developers. Good luck.

I think Vanguard SoH is the closest to what you want nowadays. Free trial available, give it a try.

Enjoyed reading your post Mr OP, that's exactly what I'm looking for too.

Only way to find it seems to be in a time machine... :(

I'd check out the free trial for The Chonicles of Spellborn. Its a big world, no handholding, no fast travel (and certainly no hearthstones!).

It may not have huge epic raid content, but I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for or not.

Hmm not exactly what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the replies. I was considering Vanguard, as I casually followed its development, what with Brad McQuaid and all...but I read mostly  disappointing reviews. But hey, free trial; I guess I'll give it a shot.

I have not heard of this Chronicles of Spellborn game. I'll check it out as well.

Glad to hear I'm not the only crazy bastage that misses good ol' hardcore EQ. :D

EQ2 has great solo content but too easy and it's just a race to 80 and then raid

VG has good PVE as well

Dungeons and Dragons Online is the best PvE game I've played thus far. And I've played em all except like L2.

    -traps

    -secret doors

    -bosses

    -teamwork required

    -grouping required

-well thought out and nicely designed dungeons

    -hardly PvP (tavern fights)

    -no auto attack

    -great explorer areas

-long play time (just about to extend to lv20)

    -great graphics (dx10)

    -ingame voice comms

The list goes on, its a great game. You just gotta get off the stupid Korthos Island and out in the world to have fun. You can do that in trial so don't worry.

I have been really been thinking about getting seriously into DDO, I have played the demo like twice and really liked it, I just started playing Vanguard today and am really liking that. And are you looking for a raid major mmo, one that challenges you to the limits? If so try giving FFXI a try, there is a lot of grind to max, and it contains some of the worlds hardest / longest bosses, it has some that have yet to be defeated, this game is for mainly hardcore players only though
