WoD rip off? epic fail for Funcom?

All press realease's on this game so far institute that is a cheap rip off of white wolfs world of darkness, before you complain here i'm not talking about the super top secret WoD online said to be in production by CCP who merged with white wolf. I'm speaking of the actual WoD PnP games. I have played or demoed every Funcom game to date and i have to say i'm not really thinking they will pull off what they are trying with this title.

First off you have Earthrise and The old republic launching and Funcom had there epic fail with age of conan which is better now but still missing all the elements of an MMo that will last. Instead of focusing there efforts on makeing an existing MMo better they are running off trying to get a drop on CCP's WoD MMo slatted for betas in 2010 with a game like it but not like it hopeing to snare in MMo fans with what amounts to copyright theft, there by lining there pockets with the hard earned money of those who have been waiting to get a taste of a modern era gothic/fantasy MMo.

After the poor production tech support and unprecedentedly early realease of there previous MMo title age of conan can we really trust them to produce an MMo worth playing or just another epic fail of what they state for a mission goal. Will this game also be falsely marketed or will it be the real deal.

I almost think that white-wolf publishing/ CCP should just take Funcom to court for copy right infringment and save the people out there some cash plus hopefully just put a death nail in this company that justly deserves to be disassembled just for falsely advertising there previous title's.

I don't know maybe thats just me but if you are going to make an MMo make it right don't steal your ideas from others. Give the gameplay you advertise instead of advertising things as being in a game that aren't even in the production stages for the game and never will be. If I have seen one repeated thing from Funcom it is not giveing what they advertise and not being original in anything they do plus chargeing people to play buggy games that they fix only rarely if at all and expecting a person to be satisfied with that.

Maybe this is just me but i feel that this game just isn't going to be worth the trouble Funcom has gone to in posting the press realease's and i'm for the most part willing to give every game a shot just searching for that next great story.

hope i didn't offend anyone with this post but its how i feel please don't put to much hope in this game until you know more.

imho the secret world is not a WoD rip off.... the theme of ancient monsters existing and people becoming aware of them is a very common theme that no one has the copy rights for. The secret world seems more along the lines of lovecraft or constantine then WoD.... WoD is more of the idea of you are the monster and are coming to grips with seeing a new world through a monsters eyes..

I must also state that WoD includes hunter which is you playing as a human being not just as a monster though most people do play were-wolf or vampire not really going in for being a hunter or a mage or a specter these things are included in WoD and in fact are granted better things than the monsters themselves. I do agree that the books themselves and the play style of WoD is Personal horror at your own actions but i dont' think that translates very well into a video game.

what do you think about the part with Funcom generally speaking not fixing games or deleviering upon there advertisements as i view that as the more important area of what i wrote though i didn'tgo into a whole lot of detail with it I fiqured anyone who had played a Funcom game in the past would get what i was driving at with it.

I'm going to disagree with the Op that this is a ripoff of WoD; however, I can see how you may feel that it is influenced by White Wolfs game. TBH, a large percentage of games are influenced by other games, starting with Blizzard's WoW, which you can say was directly influenced by Everquest or D&D, which was influenced to Tolkien. Unless a storyline is directly stolen from White Wolf, like in the case of Underworld, Funcom is allowed to create whatever game it wants.

Being from the South, about 4 hours away from White Wolfs Mecca, Atlanta, I can tell you that if you played a roleplaying game in the mid 90's to early 2000's in the South, it was probably the WoD series. As a matter of fact, oWoD still is my favorite set of game material, period (Ravnos ftw). However these days, White Wolf is seriously hanging on by a thread, mainly because CCP bought them out.

Utlimately, until you try their game, trial or beta, you don't know.

PS: As a sidenote, Anarchy Online was ultimate fail for me, the game is/was seriously outdated when I tried it about 4 months ago, I heard they have a new gaming engine, but I haven't checked it out. It was very slow and boring to me. Also AoC has horrible hardware standards that made it a waste of money for me, so I feel the Op with the disappointment in Funcom games, but they really haven't released info on the game yet, so I think judgement is premature.

Very true and very solid argument.  And i want to ask the OP, which book-series you refer too? Changeling? Vampires? Werewolves? Mages?Hunter? Plus lovecraft mythos was never AFAIK part of WoD and i believe it's already standing that TSW will be based on a lovecraft-ish theme. Really both projects interest me since i am an avid fun of both of these. But i would love to see similarities and what really made you post that.

Edit : just read the recent posts similarities with hunter not so sure about that i never read these series, also the real life setting is used in second life also what that means really? that if you make (not sure about that) a vagely vampire looking creature it's a WoD rip off? What WoD really is a nice horror setting that utilizes their d10 system. And a very detailed setting on each series, well written as well, on the origins of myths. Lovecraft and the writers before and after him belong to a different mythos really.

No its a copy of WoW like all mmos are even the ones before it.

  • SenadinaSenadina Member UncommonPosts: 896

Why only mention Earthrise and The Old Republic as MMO's they'll be competing with? There are a slew of upcoming MMO's. The market  will reach the saturation point before Secret World launches. Let's see, there is:

Champions Online; DC Universe; Fallen Earth; Aion; The Agency(maybe); Stargate Worlds(maybe); Star Trek Online; Huxley; Jumpgate Evolution ( I must be missing some but you get the point)

The definition of a successful MMO is gonna change, with so much competition.I doubt any will ever see WoW numbers again. And this is a good thing. Smaller subscriber bases, but more choice. Secret World is the only horror/gothic on the list so far. I will believe in WoD when I see some solid press release. There are a lot of MMO's in the infant stages too, might never see the light of day.

I hope it succeeds, although Funcom makes me wary too. My God, I want to play one of every genre, and that is not possible while I still have to work for a living. Just not enough hours in the day. :

    Ok, I rambled a bit, but it's late..heh

    Adacanavar, you are wrong.

The Secret World and all the Lovecraft  lore similarities has absolute nothing to do with Word of Darkness universe.

Your hunter analogy is even worse...

I can see only 3 possibilities here:

1-You dont know much about TSW or the Lovecraft fantastic lore.

2-You know nothing about World of Darkness universe.

3-You are just expressing a "failcom" cliche and trying to sound smart.

In the end , I am excited about TSW and WoD, but Adacavanar, you are so confused about both games and universes.

The OP should learn to read and use the internet more properly.

What has World of Darkness to do with The Secret World... and visa versa?

Ragnar Tornquist started his concept on The Secret World back in the 90's already. So get a grip. He is working on this game for over 10 years!

During these years he made spin-offs in single player games like The longest journey and Dreamfall.

You Funcom haters are getting beyond pathetic right now. Because in your narrow point of view, then CCP and White Wolf can also go sue TV productions companies that brought us Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and all the other series in the same genre.

    LOL!

But at least the OP gave us a good laugh for his trolling effort.

  • CyntheCynthe Member UncommonPosts: 1,414

Both posters above have hit it just right. If this was a rip off, then Blizzard needs to be brought to court by Mythic and Turbine like NOA! lol  Dungeons and Dragons wouldn't exist without Tolkien and so on.

Completely and utterly ridiculous assumption. Read some Lovecraft, please! World of Darkness is you playing a vampire, it's vampire vs werewolf, any vampires or werewolves in The Secret World is there will be any, aren't going to be even remotely likable as in WoD and will most probably have a strong link to demons.

    - World of Darkness: Vampires and Werewolves, you probably really like at least one of these.

-The Secret World: Utterly creepy demons all around, nothing to like about these other then to bask in their ability to rip you to pieces.

Now there may be some nice demons  or maybe something completely not related to demons in TSW but still, nothing to do with WoD.

    Here we go.

"Oh.. It has monsters and vampires.... (think of other game that also has monsters and vampires... World of Darkness) It's a World of Darkness ripoff!!"

I suppose if one chose to follow such simple and limited lines of logic, they could come to that conclusion.

TSW will involve myriad mythologies, urban myths, conspiracy theories... etc. It's much larger than any one area of fiction.

As for the OP's closing statement:

"...please don't put to much hope in this game until you know more."

Perhaps you should take your own advice and not go jumping to conclusions until you know more of the game you're talking about.

    Here's a start...

Check out this video of Ragnar Tornquist describing the game in his own words:

The part relevant to the OP starts at about 1:10

And tolkien needs to get sued by vikings

  • UmbralUmbral Member Posts: 1,051

... and there is much more similarities between Der Ring des Nibelungen and Lord of the Rings than TSW and WoD...

What the OP said is even worse than say Lovecraft and Anne Rice are the same author.

I do hope at least now Adacanavar realized how off was his silly accusation.

I'm not sure they're trying to get a drop on the WoD mmo.  The Secret World was announced in early 2007, I registered on their forums in May of '07, and if memory serves, the White Wolf/CCP merger announcement (and the concurrent WoD MMO announcement) happened later in 2007.

The Secret World has been in the works for awhile, and aside from metaphysical underpinnings, doesn't seem to have much in common with WoD.

    Translation:

CCP is very awesome company and I will love their world of darkness mmo that isn't out yet.

Funcom is very bad company even tho I never buy their crap games.  I know their new game is a rip off and epic fail even tho no one has ever seen it.

If Funcom's rip off of WoD is better than new CCP game it would be because they stole it and left CCP nothing to work with.

That's what I got out of the OP anyway...  Pre-Mature trolling.

    *edited to add*

Its to bad their isn't legal action taken on people that make some of the comments seen on this forum.  Accusing someone of copyright theft is a pretty hefty amount of BS imho.  I mean written accusations you know aren't true...  Maybe its not illegal everywhere I don't know.

I'm not really even what I would call a funcom fan as I don't subscribe to any of their MMO's.  However, the source material for this game if anything would be closer to Lovecraft... as an example..

"The Call of Cthulhu" is one of H. P. Lovecraft's best-known short stories. Written in the summer of 1926, it was first published in Weird Tales, February 1928."

^^ That being listed as one of the most obvious sources of inspiration for the game.

Now if you want to tell me that World of Darkness pre-dates a 1926/28 work.. we can talk about copyright issues.  Oh and this obviously ignores the things which inspired Lovecraft...

Just a nice trolling thread again... which seems to be what the site is about these days.

Not likeing a company is one thing.  Crapping on their games is something that people do... However, I'm sorry but going to a statement like this:

"they are running off trying to get a drop on CCP's WoD MMo slatted for betas in 2010 with a game like it but not like it hopeing to snare in MMo fans with what amounts to copyright theft, there by lining there pockets with the hard earned money of those who have been waiting to get a taste of a modern era gothic/fantasy MMo."

Is something else entirely..... "what amounts to copyright theft"....

Edit : WoD setting is fine at least for me i enjoyed countless hours in pnp But to use an analogy , Because TSW and whatever whitewolf project is are both fruits, you cant compare to an apple to an orange the only common they have is them being fruits, has to do with taste!

This it to address all posters who keep referencing WoW towards D&D and LotR:

Wrath of the Lich King blatanty is jacking LotR. So was WC3: The Frozen Throne to a very minor degree.

WoW jacked D&D for its classes.

WoW's mythos ultimately owes its inspiration to Warhammer. If you look up the Warhammer universe, it takes a good number of its lore to inspire the events and grit present in the original Warcraft.

So please, if you're going to reference this sort of stuff... at least tack on Warhammer to it.

what i don't understand is why Funcom would attempt at a new game when there is still so much to be done with AoC. This is either gonna end really bad or really bad and funny.
