For all the guilds out there I have a question and for people who are on the MMORPG forums.
My main issue is that why are all the popular guilds RP-PvP or RP-PvE. I can't find a single guild on the Star Wars: The Old Republic that is PvP or PvE. They all have to be RP!!! And, my issue with RP is that, I don't know RP so I don't want to be part of it.
So uh, why is it that this game is attracting to RPers. Age of Conan, Warhammer, Aion, etc. I see a small segment of RP guilds, but this game is like primaryily, 80% to 90% RP guilds.
Why is that?

Because BioWare focuses on Storytelling. Because BioWare is known for excellent RPG's. Because Story-Focus is what many RPers love.
At least, that's the main reasons I can think of. ^^ Might be the big PvP and PvE guilds are not there yet because they frankly have no clue how combat and PvP will work in the game as of now. They might just wait to see what the game actually IS before deciding to go there.

In my opinion, this game is the opposite of RP. You can't actually contribute to the story, only act it out.
@OP
This game probably won't have as many RP guilds as you think. A handful of MMORPG.com postings really has no bearing. Also, you don't like RP because you don't know what it is, or because you know what it is and don't want to get involved with it? If the former is the case, you should maybe find some information about it and then decide

How is it the opposite of RP when you can make your own choices along the lines of the quests your character goes through? How is not RP when you get to decide how you treat your companions and how to (if at all) interact with them? I think those are rather interesting RP things right there.
It's not the -ONLY- way of going about RP content, certainly, but then again, we've not yet heard of what kind of content input BioWare will give once the game goes live. With the HeroEngine, they have a lot more options to do that than with other games before them.
So yeah...I think there's quite a bit of RP in there. Plus, even if you don't consider story a big RP thing, I think that a lot of RPers enjoy a great story if they can enjoy it with their own character. Hence why BioWare's games are successful, no?
If you check out the Community Creation Forums on the official site, you will see that quite a lot of RP is already happening...probably months, if not years before the game will launch. So...yeah.
Anyway, I do believe there will be non RP servers and thus non RP guilds in the game, too. Just give it some time. *shrugs* It'll still be a while before it comes out after all.

I'm guessing the reason is the RP guilds are the ones that are found early...years before we've even heard of the launch. RP players would have (possibly) the most commitment...even so that the people interested start planning out ahead.
I'm quite confident the actual number of RP guilds will be alot lower than just normal PvP/PvE guilds when the game launches.
Probably cause RP'rs dont need a game to Rp. Im sure they can find other thigns to do with guildies while they wait for it to actually come out ....
You will also find that many groups use the "RP" tag and description to keep out the riffraff. (I'm not denying or putting down the groups that actually *do* roleplay mind you, just explaining) This "RP-lite" is basically a way of saying "if you type in leet speak all the time; think "5Uckzmaballz" is a good character name; or think Will Farrell is actually funny, you don't belong in our guild.....
Think about it, your just following a decession tree, you cant really effect the storyline.
Now think about table top gaming, like D&D. The Dungeon Master can have this elaborate storyline all laid out ready to go, including places for players to make decessions (just like your gonna get from Biowares storyline) and yet the players attempt to do something outside the constraints that the DM has spent hours creating. A good DM rolls with it, uses his imagination and a story unfolds that is truly effected by the players!! Thats role playing.
The first attempt at role-playing online was MUD's. And with good admins you could role-play out stories much like table top gaming. Then graphics and more stringent programing entered and role-playing took a major back seat. Although companies like Bioware created fantastic RPG simulators for gaming (the Baldurs gate series) they were/are still decession tree's and the outcome has 1 or more pre-determined outcomes.
Enter MMO's, the concept of a live world with regular updates afford the potential for players to effect the world they play in, and not have pre-determined outcomes. Thats the dream, but the reality is far from that. Honestly MUD's were so much closer to the promised land. Actually graphically Bioware's NWN's is closer to that than today's MMO's.
When SWG went live (even with its myriad of technical problems) it was pointed in the right direction. The sandbox features, the toon customization (looks and skills), player ran economy, and even story arc's (Cries of Alderan anyone) that the player could effect the outcome of. Sadly SOE took the game in a completely 180 degree direction from that launch to were it is today.
I do not believe Bioware will (nor do I want them too) create SWG2. I just hope they put in enough sandbox features to give this game a chance to REALLY have the opertunity to role play and not just be a glorified single player rpg (which btw Bioware does really well!!)!

I think one of the big things you guys are missing is its STAR WARS! There are going to many people who want to RP in a star wars universe to begin with than a new IP.
<--- part of a "do what you want for the benefit of the guild and player" guild. We have pvprs, pvers, crafters, roleplayers, entertainers...... basically a little of everything. Me personally i dabble in everything.
we founded the guild in swg and have few rules...have fun, do what you want, respect the guild and its players. That's it. 6 years later, spanning a few games, we are still going strong, and as former valcynites in SWG we hope to kick off HUGE with other swg players in TOR.
The game is still likely a year plus away from release. I'm sure you'll find some non RP guilds pop up by then. Hopefully there will be a RP and RP-PvP server option like WAR, so RPers can play with like minded people and people who don't want to RP can not have to deal with RPers.
Anyway, how hard is it to RP in Star Wars? You don't have to talk like a bad Shakespearean actor in Star Wars. Just avoid replacing letters with numbers and talking about American Idol or Chuck Norris in general chat and you'll be fine.
So if you're on an RP server, you can't talk about real life issues, your name, your job, and say, "hey guys, I just got the new Intel core Nehalem i8 Octo-Core 4.5 GHZ stock clock, 48GB DDR4 RAM, and an Octo-SLI 4 dual-CPU Nvidia GTX 300 video cards, each containing 4GB DDR5 memory each."
So, if I were on an RP server, I couldn't say any of that, I'd have to act like I were on a script?
Hmm.........
Generally, there is an OOC channel where you can talk about anything like your example that RPers turn off immediately and is not RP enforced. My post was half in jest, but seriously, do you really think there will be a shortage of non-RP guilds?
You could say whatever you liked, so long as it was in an appropriate place - every game with an "RP" server or servers I have played has OOC channels where you can say whatever...you can also say whatever you like in tells, private chats, even guild/kin/corp chats if they allow it....
The point of most RP servers is that you will not *publicly* engage in talking, shouts, yells, emotes or whatever about things that aren't "in" the games genre/story/environment. It's a courtesy to other players who shouldn't have to filter out the basic world display channels to avoid having to listen to/see/hear whatever your OOC chatter.
Every RP guild I have ever been in has maintained at least one non-rp chat channel and none of them even suggest RP on something like voice comms.
The Covenant
"We are Decendents of Jedi in the Secret Society known as "The Covenant"
Hiding from the Sith Empire for so long, watching our friends and neighbors die. We "The Covenant" are coming out of hiding. We have sat back long enough watching the Sith rule over the Galaxy.
Guild Objective: We are going to be a PVE/PVP Guild. We will be working together, to destroy the Sith. Watching one anothers backs, as we fight out way to the top of being 1 of the best Republic guilds out there. We will show no mercy. We will be communicating on our Guild website Here . We will be using Ventrilo, "which is an online chat with a microphone".
Being in the Guild: Being a member of our Guild, is like being in a big family. We are here to help out 1 another, yet learn from each other. Making sure everyone gets loot, exp, and building friendship. If your good at PVE, and not so good at PVP. We will be happy to help you get better. We love to bring new members into the Guild. I love to personally chat with each and every member to see there Opinion on the Guild. Making sure they are happy, and arent having problems. When there is a problem I wish everyone to bring it to me so we can settle it with no problems. I dont like taking sides, I just want everyone to stay happy and enjoy the game.
Recruiting: During recruiting, I normally like to talk to the member, and ask them a few questions, as well as we ask you to post an application. Once I start getting some moderators in the Guild. I will have them do the same. I like to have my members bring in friends, and people they talk to. We will be recruiting all classes as well. Being active is very important, I think the more you are on and active. The Better friends, and knowledge you will have. I look for good leadership in all my members as well.
We are still sorta small, but every guild starts small and grows as a family. We will show the Sith who is stronger.

The Covenant is going to be a PVE/PVP Guild. We are accepting new members daily and have 39 members with 19 active so far this month. We have forums and will be getting a Vent set up possibly at Beta and defiantly by Launch. We have a great website created by our wonderful leader DarkDemon. If you are interested come by and check out the site. If you would like to join submit an application and we as a guild will review your app and you will more then likely be accepted. Good luck on your journey to finding a guild. If you do end up joining please mention my forum name Insanepain in your application.

Well one of my members, already beat me to it! lol Yes, we are more focused on PvP, and PvE for better gear. You can RP in the Guild with whoever, but I kinda suck at RP. So I don't do it much myself.
My members can if they want to, but the Guild itself is PvP, and PvE.

IMO RP in any mmo happens the moment you log into the server. You're notputting your actual self in the game, but more of a represntation of yourself.
So in theory every mmo you play, your in a RP setting whether you follow it or not.
There has only been 2 games i've ever followed true RP in, City of Villans and EverQuest.
Yeah, I was looking for a guild but there all RP, RPing is for 40 year old virgins in there moms basement.
Also guilds that require you to use vent or teamspeak fail.
I've noticed a lot of RP Guilds popping up for this game also. Being that it is Star Wars, for those that want to RP they can immerse themselves in a world that they've either seen or been a part of in other formats such as SWG, movies, books, etc. Since Star Wars is a widely recognized franchise, I think that makes it easier for people to be familiar with it and can already see themselves RPing in it, rather than a new game without so much lore.
Personally, I don't RP, it's not my thing. But it makes sense based upon the Star Wars name that there are so many guilds showing up that want to be a part of the story and RP.

RP is going to be excellent in this game. So looking forward to playing my young jedi Bananakin Whinewanker.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Seriously? I've been having trouble finding a guild that seems to roleplay. Like every other MMO, they all seem to have names you'd expect of modern-day bands, and members named things like LordXtraCheese, KottonKandiMan and LolzorBallzor. I tend to not read any further after seeing that shit.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
