Which was the more addictive game at the time?

mmoguy43mmoguy43 Member UncommonPosts: 2,770

Ok, this is assuming that  the player has never played a mmo before and has been playing this for atleast a year or two after release. Ignoring number of subscribers and over all popularity, which was the more addicting game? EverQuest or WoW? I recall some extreme cases of people on Evercrack but I know of some people that dropped out of school just to play WoW. From personal experiance and other people you know what do you think?

I would have to say I was definitely an EQ junkie and was addicted to my Evercrack. I know i make alot of posts wishing I could find a game like EQ or would always like to see some changes in EQ (graphics) to bring me back.

EQ,... mostly cause it was my first MMO and also was never a big fan of the warcraft series.

Heh I knew a kid that dropped out of school to play FFXI. That was the most addicting game for me.  The longest I played that game straight was 13 hours on a day off.

But I wanst addicted to EQ only played it a month before me and my firends went to FFXI.   Im not addicted to WoW either, I pretty much only play when My cousins are on, but I have a feeling about about to get addicted to Vanguard.

This is a tough question for me to pose an answer to. I know a lot more people that play WoW then I ever knew that played Everquest. Many of those players that played WoW also played if for a very long time, but the few that played Everquest after I have met them had been playing it much longer than any WoW player I have met. Clearly they both are very addicitve games.

after much consideration though I am going to have to say WoW is the most addictive. I hate to say it but the subscription numbers that WoW has right now are too big to ignore. Clearly it is very popular with a large number of people, even though it is not the perfect game. People still like it enough to play it after all this time, and still are constantly getting more and more of their friends to join it as well.

I never played Everquest but after my time in college I only ever met one person that was still playing it, but I could find someone that was playing it or had played WoW in every room. I know Everquest had been out for a long time already, but based on my observations I still have to give the nod to WoW. Good job Everquest on a game well fought though.

It's the person that makes the addiction, not the game.

WOW by a mile. I played EQ since beta and WOW now. The grind is VERY monotonic. Wow has a lot more variation and thus there is always one more interesting thing to do.

First: Star Wars Galaxies Pre-NGE hands down!

Second: World of Warcraft pre-TBC I have to admit.

For me, it was DAoC before Trials of Atlantis expansion. I miss DAoC as it was then, with the Players that played it, the most.

My second one was EvE Online before Mining Barges came out. When working together Mining in Tech 1 Cruisers and Battleships was the only way to help your Corpmates get their new ship. My corpmates and I had alot of good times while mining the belts back then. Now with the Mining Barges and Exhumers a single Player can strip an entire asteroid belt in no time and so there is far less reason to group together to get the task done.

My Third was LotRO while most of us that had gone through Beta were helping the rest of our Kinship mates get to lvl 50.

I played alot of other MMOs but these three above have been my evercrack.

    This ^.

It was the risk that hooked me - kinda like poker. I honestly don't know how people get hooked to games like WOW, it's all a one way street of reward.

Same here...I beta tested WoW and thought it was an OK game but was much too easy after 5 years of EQ...... I think the death penalty and the abundance of content made EQ much more thrilling.......WoW was jsut a way to pass the time with no emotional attachment whatsoever.

EQ hands down. It was a BIG thing at the time. WOW may be a solid game all around, but EQ was trail blazing the genre. PLayers were genuinly hesitant to leave EQ1. Many players want to leave WOW but just havnt found a viable option

Personal experience it was EQ. WoW never hooked me, although, I do think its a great game. I just felt it didn't offer me anything new.

I know a guy at work who plays all the time. So does his wife. If he's not at work he is on WoW. He is constantly talking about WoW on the phone to a friend of his. Its hilarious. He reminds me of myself, lol.

The only other game that hooked me like EQ did was DAoC. I could play that game for hours on end.

Any other game I can only play a max of 2 hours, and I call it a day. Most games I play don't last more than 3 weeks.

EQ had me hooked again about a month ago until they nerfed my weapons. I haven't logged on since.

Definitely EQ. Not really 100% sure why. The last year I played was a real love hate relationship, with the lion share on the hate end of the spectrum. Maybe it was because you invested so much into your character youl felt like you had to keep playing? Maybe it was the close relationships you had to form if you ever wanted to do high-end content and didn't want to say your vitual "good byes", but EQ was definitely a far more addictive drug than WoW. WoW would have been like a morning cup of coffee versus a EQ a vial of heroin.

There is a good reason it was called "EverCrack". And "EverCamp," but that' an entire different story.

UO, I've played 20 hours straight on weekends. It was the best game ever created.

The first yr they ran fabled mobs folks on my server banded together to camp the frenzed ghoul(actually nearly all the fabled inguk). Thus you were on a "list" to get your loot. Average was about 24 hrs during that weekend, and I spent nearly 26 to get mine.

If not for my monthly stash of vicodins, from the doc, I doubt my legs could of lasted that long. They still ached for a few days from sitting all those hrs.

Never done anything like that before, and doubt I would ever do that again. I wanted the haste item for my pali pretty badly though...along with a slew of others, and the mini raid of folks working together was pretty cool.

EQ was my first MMO in 01, and I still havent found one I prefer more.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
