Do you realize that this is a browser-based game, not a client download? I agree that if this was a client it'd be a bit underwhelming, but for a browser game it sure beats the heck out of Duels.
My only real complaint about the graphics so far is that the animations seem a little two slow.. like the characters are gently prodding eachother rather than attacking.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
I am part of the Disciple staff. I have been reading the comments in the forums, and on our game page. Please keep in mind that this game is a browser game done entirely in Flash. It's not going to look like a client game because there are a lot of technological limitations to produce a game like this that plays completely in a web browser without any client download.
You can't really compare the game to games like World of Warcraft or other client MMOs. The game is almost 100% PvP and the fights happen in real time, which has never really been done before like this, on a web browser, with animation (only MUD style games like duels.com with text only).
What sort of engine are you using for the 3D rendering with this? Papervision? Or are you using the new 3D attributes with flash player 10? Any chance of a downloadable exe version, or any benefits of keeping the swf local instead of playing it through the browser? Also, just out curiousity, what are you running on the backend for the realtime communication?
[Insert reason to be considered a super nerd here]
Actually, now that I watch the trailer again, it looks like there's no actual 3D rendering. You guys just did a good job with your detail, which is great in terms of performance. Sound about right?

Will there be drops for upgrading armor , weapons , spells etc. when you win battles? Will there be a letterboard for the best players? Will progression be saved at all or will you have to start over every time you log in ?

Our engine and technology are all proprietary, we didn't license any 3rd party engines. We are using some of the new attributes from Flash 10.
We use may use air, but no plans for a downloadable exe.
This is a browser game, so though the graphics may not be as great as a client game, its much more accessible.

There will be no drops, but there is an item mall with thousands of items. You gain in game currency from fights. You will also gain XP, so as you level up, you gain access to new actions and gear.
There will be a ranking board. This will be one giant sandbox, so the ranking is universal. There two types of fights, a spar and a battle. Only battles are ranked.
The world is persistant, so yes your progression wil be saved.
From that video it basically just looks like an in-depth online fighting game. Using the excuse that its a browser based game doesn't really hold up. Fusion Fall is a browser based game as well and looks a ton better in graphics quality, though it is their own self created engine that runs under flashplayer, it still runs inside your web browser. Free Realms is technically a browser based. This game could be made a much better browser-based game, but as far as it stands, it looks more like something that was made around 1999-2000. I'm sure when it comes out it might be entertaining, and if it really is just purely flash based graphics, then its fairly decently well done. This just looks like something that should be made as an app for facebook, and will probably have more success if it was.
I for 1 am really looking forward to this game. It serves a niche that has for too long been ignored. I'll play my client game when I want that type of action. This will provide entertainment when I am away from my system. Good Job all!

Fusion fall requires that the end user install the unity client to be able to use. You are correct that the game itself plays in the browser, but requiring a client install creates accessibility hurdles for people that want to play in work environments, etc.
In 1999-2000 only the very basic versions of Flash were available and making games like Disciple was not yet possible. It wasn't until Actionscript 2.0 became available in 2004/2005 (that allowed object oriented programming), that making games like Disciple was possible. It wasn't until 2005/2006 that you really started to see the first non/clent fully animated games available in a browser. Up until now there have not been any realtime browser PvP MMOs, unless you count games like duels, which are all text and static image based (no animations).
We do however have plans for both iPhone and Facebook distributions of the game, which should help extend the reach.
In reality though, this is all technical, I think what's important is what are the potential benefits of this game to the community at mmorpg.com, and players from around the world. The answer is that its an easily accessible, free game that can be played in virtually any environment (don't need to install something to play). So if people on the forums here at mmorpg.com are tired of arguing in the forums, they can have a quick fight in the game to resolved their differences Even if they're at work or somewhere they can't install heavy game clients.

I agree. I'm just used to downloading swfs locally and creating projector executables of them to keep a more permanent version of the file handy. That way I can avoid having to download the same content when the cookie lapses. Of course, then you run into the issue that you're stuck with a version that might not be the latest and greatest. But I like how accessible the game will be since it's flash based. Maybe you could eventually set up a mobile version that will allow phones that do not support flash *cough blackberry cough* to instead receive image screenshots of an swf running server side along with javascript action controls. Or something. Buzzword buzzword. Anyways, good stuff.

The mobile version you just described is in development
I know the whole thing wouldn't have been possible till now, especially multiplayer non-turn based through flash. Just for flash, especially with what's available now, the graphics could be better. But since you are going for pretty much all computer types, the speed should be the best with what you have. I think this is probably a first of its kind and should lead the way to bigger things. Unfortunately the current flash 10 sucks for speed and responsiveness, hopefully this will be fixed with the soon coming flash 11. But hopefully this won't be a problem for you guys.
I'm glad you guys are working on the embedded facebook app, and I think this game would be great on phones. It's also nice to hear its free, except for the phone version I'm sure would have to cost something .

The phone version will first be released on the iTunes app store for iPhones, and it will be free! Also, the way we make our money is with gold sales, and premium subcscriptions. You can play all the way to the level cap for free, and we designed the game that you should be able to play about the first 30% of progression without even wanting or needing to subscribe.
If someone subscribes the pricing ranges from a few bucks a month up to $5.99 per month.

Oh, you guys are making the mobile version as a mobile app? I was hoping it would be something that was still browser based, but would recognize that it's being viewed on a mobile device and redirect the user to the mobile version of the game. Looks like I won't be able to play it on my phone. Blackberry strikes again. Stupid phone.

Not all browser-based online RPGs are garbage. Estiah and Cthulhu Nation are very nicely done and have a certain charm to them. Urban Dead is to my mind the best game in the world right now, and its semi-imitators Shartak & Nexus War are also pretty sophisticated, with lots to do and complex interaction between the players.
And MMORPG.com has said time and time again that they will not list or cover these games.
So what exactly is going on here?

Something to do at lunch at least.
Looks fairly entertaining for a browser based game. Would like to get in on the beta testing.
I'll try it out, looks good for a browser-based. And from the trailer it looks better than a lot of other ones I see out today.
My only real complaint about the graphics so far is that the animations seem a little two slow.. like the characters are gently prodding eachother rather than attacking.

Looks pretty interesting, is that a posh word for SH!T? Forgive my French, but if you think that's good then you need to go to spec savers my friend.

Thought I'd add this to this thread. Another trailer, kind of similar, but with concept art as well.

That was our pre-alpha trailer. The trailer on mmorpg.com is pre-beta. You can expect the final experience to be a bit quicker.
