Hi all. Ive played many MMORPGs in my time but never seem the be able to stick to any one of them.
With the retail release of Eve now in the shops my interest has been sparked again, (ive always been a sucker for the box).
Problem is I dont know where to start. I have played Eve before but my memories were not good ones, I kept losing my ship and gave up.
I like the idea of PVP and being a pirate but isnt that going to make me a target for just about every other player in Eve? Not a good place to start.
What is the state of the game at the moment? Are there plenty of other players just starting out?
Re-ignite my interest please guys and I will go out and buy the game tomorrow.

Do what you think would be fun for you. Do not try and force yourself into liking a role in the game that you truly do not want to do.
If you want to be a pirate then by all means go do it. You won't be a target for everyone. You will just become a target for some of the locals where ever you set up at. Read the piracy guides and then start looking at some of the player pirate corps and then you will have some pirate friends so you won't be learning the hard way solo.
As far as the state of the game goes well there are lots of new players. In the last yearthe average online user numbers have jumped up by 10,000 people. The latest expansion and all the Goon vs BoB / Kenzoku really got some new people and old interested in the game.
Bottom line, do what you want in game and the game is very healthy and getting stronger.
Good statements Lordmonkus and btw, a hardy o/ to you - seems we keep meeting up on these EVE threads lol.
Dopy - in regards to becoming a pirate as Lord said, do what you think you would like. Yes being a pirate will likely mean losing some ships in the beginning and no that is never fun, but it IS a good learning experience and will help you to slowly create some good builds each time you learn from your mistakes. If your not at all interested in losing ships on a regular basis, but are more interested in fighting in general then MY advice would be to look into running missions. Granted the first 20 or so you do will be relatively easy and repetative however as you gain faction with whichever npc corporation you decide to run missions for, they will get harder and require better ships to complete. You may also want to look for some player corporations that do wormhole "ratting" expeditions. With aprocrypha's addition of wormholes (and the new AI system for the enemies inside) players can enjoy fitting NPC's while still getting a "near pvp" experience. It should be known that the rats inside are harder than your standard npc's but they also drop some nice loot.
All in all though it all goes back to lordmonkus's comment about what you like. Id suggest running through the newly created tutorials, taking a week or two and really getting your feet wet with regards to all the different aspects of the game. I know when i started i had the same ideas as you - i wanted to be a pirate and hold ships for ransom etc. After i learned a bit about the game though, i found that i too didnt like losing ships every other day and tried my hand at some of the mining and exploration aspects of the game. A year and a half later i have found this area to be extremely fun for me. You'd be amazed at some of the other aspects of game play that go into mining operations (scanning out hidden belts, fighting rats, worrying about PVP players, refining, planning, etc). theres a lot that EVE has to offer and unfortunately some of the more interesting aspects can take a few months to really delve into which means you cant really experience all that there is to offer during the trial but you can definitely get a taste of these things, and likely even see them first hand if you join a good corporation.
regardless on what you decide - if you ever need any assistance in game feel free to send me an EVEmail (character name: Eizmund Drohner) and fly safe!!
Thanks for those detailed and informative replies guys, appreciated. Part of the fun is getting to grips with the game before deciding on which branch to take. I believe the tutorial has been revamped so for someone like me, wet behind the ears so to speak, will be a lot of fun. I will go out tomorrow and buy. Maybe even send you a post in game m8. Thanks to both again.
Good Luck and most importantly have fun
Maybe we will someday hear about your endeavours in the EVE-Cluster.

Hey,
Well you've already been given excellent advice. Just a few additions from me
With EvE, if you start out on your own, you are really going to struggle as it does have a steep learning curve. I'm sure all eve players have seen the following image sometime so you might as well
Best course of action when you start out in EvE is to get into a friendly helpful corporation. You really learn fast in that way. My suggestion would be to join EvE University. They are dedicated to the task of teaching new people. You will find yourself amongst other very new players and a very helpful and fun corporation. After that, various pirate corps do recruit directly from the EvE University regularly. If you learn the basics in EvE Uni, you'll have an easier time once you are in a pirate corp. And who knows where you go after that
If you are having any trouble at all or need some ISK, you can also hit me up anytime ingame, Character name is jst x3k5
Tho I cant really help you much with missions and such(live in 0.0), I can answer any questions you have about any aspect of the game.
Its funny, I received the same "helpful" hints when I first started, and truth be told, most veterans simply forget what it feels like to start EVE for the first time. I can see how these above posts may seem to be helpful, but in actuality, they are not. Here is what I believe you are looking for:
What skills to train?
The main thing you have to ask yourself is, what kind of weapons and/or tanking do you want to do? Or better yet, what kind of ships do you want to fly? Here is a general guidline to what ship types require what type of training:
Amarr: Armor Tank, Laser Beams/Pulses. Skills to train are small energy turrets, hull upgrades and mechanic.
Caldari: Shield Tank, Missiles/Rockets. Skills to train are standard missile launchers, shield operation, shield upgrades and engineering.
Minmitar: Armor or Shield Tank, Drones, Blasters/Railguns, Skills to train are hybrid turrets, hull upgrades/shieild operation & shield upgrades and drone skills.
Gallente: don't know much about this ship type.
The main thing to remember in EVE is to let your ship's strengths guide your training. For example, if you are Amarr an starting off with a Punisher, you will want to train in the skills that your ship gives a bonus for. In this case, it is small energy turrets. Whats left for you to decide is whether you want beam or pulse laser.
Once you have your weapons/shields/armor/drone skills up to around level four each, you will want to start training some ancillary skills like high speed maneuvering (increases ships agility), sharpshooter (increases accuracy and damage), long range targeting (sniping) and others. Don't let the vast array of skill intimidate you. Once you get a handle on the basic skills your race and ship benefit most from, you will learn everything else from the people around you in New Eden. Safe flying.
Everything Dis_Ordur said is true except for one thing which I am sure is just a simple slip. Minmatar use Projectiles, not Hybrid guns.
Gallente armor tank and make extensive use of drones and hybrid turrets.
Going to update you on that one.
Amarr is armor tank, yes. So that's all correct what you wrote there - basically.
Caldari is shield tank, again yes. They are also missile/rockets - but they are HYBRID as well. So hybrid turrets will be useful to train.
Minmatar is Armor, shield or SPEED tank - besides this, they mostly use Projectile turrets, and sometimes drones - but that's not often. Minmatar is the most SP heavy race there is, because they are so versatile, and they need to train both shield and armor and speed skills in order to tank right. So skills are projectile turrets (autocannon or artillery specialization eventually), hull upgrades/shield upgrades/operation, navigational skills, and a bit of drones.
I've been minmatar since day 1, and I started in 2005. I have NEVER used drones. However, I will be training them soon. :P
Gallente are like caldari, but instead of missiles/rockets, they use drones. And instead of shield, they armor tank.. So that's hybrid turrets again, and stuffs.

All races have ships requiring different skilling and Minmatar are not that difficult to train. If you want to be accurate, Amarr are the hardest to train since they have all types of boats - turret, missile and drone.
It is a matter of choice only and at that point, all races are pretty much equal.

Heh, I've never had a use for drones anyway, my turrets have taken everything down I needed. :P -And I'm not much of a droneblob guy.
Minmatar need shield tanking, armor tanking and speed tanking to be effecient - if you want to fly all kinds of minnie ships. If you stick to the ones that are build for shield, armor or speed, ofc you won't need everything. But the minine ships are build with so much variety in low/med slots, you need both(/all, some don't consider speed tanking as actual tanking)..
Every race has all types of boats, as far as I know.

Minmatar and Caldari have no drone boats.
Minmatar and Gallente have no missile boats.
Amarr is the only race having all types of boats.
Drone boats - Sentinel, Arbitrator, Curse, Pilgrim.
Missile boats - Inquisitor, Vengeance, Malediction, Sacrilege, Curse, Damnation.
Turret boats - the rest.
Curse can be also considered as shield tank boat to some extent.
The only 'issue' with Minamatar is double type of tanking(missiles are optional slots) but like caldari or gallente, there are two lines of boats for each.
It is a matter a choice and everyone should focus the skilling towards 1 ship, always better to fly one ship properly then to suck at flying 10 different ones.

WHAT?!
The Minmatar have plenty of drone boats, more so than the Amarr - just to give 3 examples as a start - Rupture, Bellicose, Vagabond - the list goes on.
In fact to state that Amarr have "dron boats" is false.
The sentinel does have a 60 drone bay, but being that it only has 20 bandwidth that means it can only deploy 4 small drones at a time...hardly a drone boat.
The arbitrator, pilgrim, and curse....hmm all the exact same ship here - same body, same drone hold (150 drone bay with a 50 bandwidth): That said ill give the amarr the fact of having essentially 1 "drone boat worthy" ship for their inventory. Since both the pilgrim and the curse are nothing more than the T2 version of the arbitrator.
Lets not steer this kid in the wrong direction.
The minmatar are the race of choice generally speaking if you want to be extremely diversified. Guns, Missiles, Drones, shield tanking, armor tanking, speed tanking (though this kinda no longer exists). The downfall to this race is the fact that in being so diverse you will need a TON of points to fully utilize all that they have to offer. Early on however, they do offer some of the best frigates in the game for PVP and PVE, and projectile turrets let you change your damage type on the fly just lik missiles. That said, they can carry different payloads on their ships and can attack the "weakest" point of a target.
The Amarr are primarily laser beams and armor tanking. This means they can take quite a beating but they are also generally slower (armor tanking slows down ships) to compensate for this however - they can change the range of their lasers on a dime so they can hit you from both near and far away. The downside to lasers is that they also utilize a lot of capacitor (energy) and many newer players have trouble trying to "conserve capacitor" so they can continue to fire and repair.
Gallente are Blaster and Drone combatants who also armor tank. They specialize in getting in your face and pummeling you to death with some of the highest DPS weapons in the game. Their downside is that they move slow due to armor tanking, and need to be right up on you to hit you with their blasters. To compensate for this they utilize drones to attack at a distance. Their upside is that you can also opt to utilize the same drone space you would use for fighter drones to instead carry electronic warfare drones or other "payloads" that can render your opponent all but useless while you close the gap on them or beat on them with your blasters.
Caldari are the "snipes" of eve lol. they are the race of choice if you like big explosions and the idea of hitting targets from long range. Caldari shield tank which is helpful because shields repair themselves overtime which means your tank will effectively repair itself along with any modules you add to help it repair itself. the downside of this is that shield tanking requires the use of medium slots. Many of your PVP setups utilize these same slots for important modules such as warp scramblers (since you dont want your enemy warping away while your beating on him) and sometimes outfitting a caldari ship for PVP can be a challenge. The missiles that Caldari utiltiize allow them to change damage types on the fly much like minmatar and can do massive damage, but also fire slower. This race also possess the Raven Battleship which is one of the best Mission running (PVE) battleships in the game if outfitted correctly.
Lastly i would state that if your planning to go with an idustrial based character you will eventually want to fly mining barges (ORE ships) as they can mine the most ore. ORE ships utiltize shield tanking and a small drone bay to protect them. That said you may wish to look into these ideas when initially picking your race based on the things i said above.
Hope this helps and wasn't too late.
Maybe you should at least check Amarr boats to figure out what drone boat actualy is...
I would label a Dominix as a drone boat, or a Vexor. Hell even the arbitrator, but i wouldnt state that a sentinel is a drone boat.
and i've done plenty of "checking" in the matter as my characters entire basis was originally based around the concept of drone combat.
To the OP, you can take what this guy says to the bank. This is good stuff, and more eloquently stated than my post. Nice work Sequence
^^ Thanks!
The game has most likely changed a lot since you played and yes there is a lot of new people signing up everyday. I see plenty of them floating about :P
Best advice I can give you ever is find a good corp to take you in, give you some isk, starter ships for pvp, and they are active in PVP. Then you will live
Thanks for all those replies guys. Sorry I took so long to reply but I went out and got the game and have been enjoying it ever since!
I am now a member of a small but friendly and helpful corp that has really got me going in the game and what direction to take. I have my first (rookie) destroyer that will help me through the level 1 agent missions.
So on that note I would like to thank you ALL again for the detailed posts and the time it took you to make them, it was worth it.
Thanks for making this thread it convinced me to try the trial for the 3rd time, I reallllly hope I can find something special to cling to
I'm Caldari since I want to "snipe" name is Druzadin if anyone wants to show a new eager player around
haha was expecting a response by now >.<
