Let me answer the question with a question:
If you had enough money to make 1 game, and I mean real life now not fantasy. Would you make a game that would give you 5 % of all the gamers or a game that would bring you 75 % of all the gamers? More subs means more money every month.

I'm sorry, I missed the original question that spawned the answer questions
I'm guessing the original issue is 'WoW" and its dominance of the player population as wel as its dominance in flames directed against it.
To each his own. Were I to make a game, I would prefer to make a game that I enjoyed playing ..even if thats only 5% of the market.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
If I had the money to make a game, I would make the game that I would want to play. I wouldn't really care if it grabbed 5% or 75% of the playing population, because even if it only grabbed 5%, it would eventually make it's money back, and I would have a good game to play. My guess is that it would grab more than that, because it would be a game created by a gamer for gamers, not a game created by an investor for making money.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
nothing
Simply put, it depending on the reason behind making a game.
Normally people would want to go for the larger population. That's just the "right way" to run a successful business. If I were to create a game from a business point of view, then 75% it is.
However, if I am to make a game with MY take on the core design, MY idea, and MY money. Then I would make what I MYSELF would want to play. Because as we all know, trends changes in all industry. In MMORPG, it can mean that maybe by the time the game is made, the general public are ready to move on to different core design to enjoy their entertainment. So by staying true to my idea, my core design, I may be creating something that will become popular. And that to me, is a risk worth taking.
Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR
Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)
In order to get 75% of the market to play your game, you'd need to let most or all of them play completely free. That doesn't sound terribly profitable to me.
I'm no artist, so I'd design a game that I felt would maximize my subscription base, and not cater to the niche gamers.
No, it wouldn't beat WOW, but I'd be proud to drag in 1M so it could have a bit of flexibility.
