Can a MMO have combat like the PC game Mount and Blade?

I was just wondering if that was possible or would interenet lag make it not work?

I know Tacos Flambroiled once said Darkfalls combat was like Mount and Blade but its really not.

I would love an MMO with Mount and Blades combat.

Edit: Talking about the PC game Mount and Blade. Free to try here www.taleworlds.com/index.html

If you have not played and like open end worlds its a real treat. Graphics and animations lacking but its indie game.

You mean mounted combat? (ie. fighting from horseback)

Yes MMOs can do that.   Age of Conan is the first to come to mind.

edited answer because original question was changed

No was talking about the PC game Mount and Blade. I editted it so it would be more clear.

Yes, well... blocking, attacking in different angles, jumping, riding, shooting, hitboxes... that's a lot of information for an mmo. Partly why M&B combat was so good was it's responsiveness. ANY amount of lag would just ruin it so I really can't see this working in a massive scale.

We'll see how it works in normal multiplayer when they release the expansion this fall.

I haven't played M&B, but from what I've seen it appears to be a bit like an updated version of Oblvion, with mounted and directional combat?
If that's accurate then an MMO that includes a combat system like that would probably be considered part of the MMOFPS subgenre that has yet to release a good fantasy/medieval title. Not one that I've seen, at least.

    not sure about it

lag would kill the gameplay for sure ... but on the other hand side i can get a 20000 line + phone flat for 20 €

maybe its just a question of time ( improved network infrastuctur ) until lag is  not a killing factor anymore

Well AoC. But i think Darkfall is closer.

I played M&B for years to prepare for DF, and it worked very well : )

Yeah I'd agree that Darkfall's gameplay is the only thing that comes close in a MMO to date. I've not had a chance to play DF personally though so I can't tell you how well it works in a MMO though. AoC pretends to have this type of combat but underneath it's just standard MMO mechanics cleverly disguised as real time combat. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it's not true real time combat which is what I believe the OP is asking for. Darkfall is the one your looking for but until I play the game personally I won't comment on how good it's implemented or how well it works in a MMO type of game. The only thing you can't do in DF is mounted archery but everything else is there.

Yes i play Darkfall and the only thing that is similar is the archery and the fact that you swing by clicking the LMB.

I would love to swing at diffrent angles with mouse movments like in Mount and Balde instead of using T to have a vertical or horizontal swing. Also blocking in Darkfall i dont think is implemented very well. To be honest its just Sprint just to the right or left of player your fighting and swing as you run by then turn and face again as fast as you can and repeat. Thats the best option in combat as of now if the two of you are fighting with melee only. Obviously there are some other tactics that come in to play but melee is pretty much that.

I think most combat designers want that too but there are limitations on what you can do with an online game and those of a offline game. One for sure is the latency issues when dealing with a number of these ideas as well just being user friendly.
