How many characters are allowed? Per account/server?

Hi all. I'm interested in this game, in fact i've been following on and off for a few years. i remember reading a dev post a couple years ago that stated that DF would limit the number of characters allowed per account/server to one. i just wanted to confirm this.
this got me really excited because i've always been bummed when a game gets wrecked with muling, alt collecting, and multi-faced players. there are SO many games out for those type of people already. i'm hoping DF is different.

One character/server.
Right now they have just one giant server. There will be more later.
