Just to put a thought out there....

I'm not closed to new ideas. I play a lot of varied and interesting games.

I often buy new MMO's if i think they look interesting, at least to try the first month. Many haven't made it past a few days.

Lord of the Rings Online, WAR, Eve Online (OK maybe that stayed for about 2 weeks).. And yet I see all of these above... no WAY above World of Warcraft.

Before you fly at me with a whole list of reasons as to why WAR is great etc.. Ask yourself why you've given WoW such a low rating.

I think at least 75% of you have done it because it's popular, and you think it's 'Sad' to vote for the popular game, or because you got too into it and left it in anger.

World of  Warcraft is a far supirior game to all three of the above and many more that show up higher on the list here. It deserves a much better rating.

The very fact it's got less than 8 has caused me to completely loose faith in this web site. It is an inaccurate score, I'm sorry, but if you searvh you're soul, you know it's true.

your rant is based purely on speculation and your opinion. i think LOTRO is a far superior game to WoW. i played WoW all of two days and decided it wasnt good for me. however, im not going to say the game sucks or anything like that. its just my opinion which everyone in the entire world is entitled to. doesnt make anyone anymore right or wrong on the subject.

That is because it does deserve a low score, but to be fair, WAR and LOTRO also deserve lower scores.  Personally as a player of WoW, LOTRO, a beta/first monther of WAR, they all should have near the same scores, probably around the 7.5 range.  EvE is an outstanding game and really should have near the 8.0.  You like WoW, so I understand how you come to its defense, just as I understand how those who dislike WoW bash it.  I look at it more wholisticly including things like actual guilds (not just glorified raiding groups with a house) or the crafting system, other methods of playing other than hack and slash, the feel of a 'large world', Loot Items, PvP, player economy, etc.  Thus far, eve is the one who has the best of it all, and good graphics to go with it.  It doesn't have the best graphics, and has a steep curve so it will really keep it going anyhigher than 8.0, but is a much more complete game than most of the other games with high ratings.

A rating system such as the one here will be captured by whoever cares the most--and hence is most willing to vote early and often.  In this particular case, that means Ndoors (which makes Atlantica).

As for WoW being voted lower than a lot of other games, that's largely attributable to there not being that much overlap between the target audience of WoW and that of this site.  WoW's commercial success is largely attributable to attracting people who hadn't previously played an MMORPG.  That sort of person isn't likely to come to a site like this.

Ah, Quizzical also makes a very astute point that I hadn't considered before, but after having pointed out, is very true.  A majority of WoW players are first time MMO's, mainly transfering over from Warcraft/ Starcraft/ Diablo that Blizzard had done before, and much less those from the AC/EQ/UO generation or the slightly newer SWG/AO/DAoC gen.

     very fair points guys.

I entirely agree that Eve is quite simply outstanding. The crafting system, economy, sheer size and social side of the game is incredible. Because it has a very very steap learning curve, that kind of ensures you'll get smart well mannered people on it.

For me, it was also it's downfall.

Ultimately I ended up feeling a bit thick, and very overwhelmed by the size. A lot of choices had pretty far reaching ramifications in the skills learning section. I just could get my poor head round it ^_^

LOTR, I'm sorry, but it was too serious, too PC demanding, and popped right into the same pot as the dreaded Everquest 2 for me after about 2 hours of play.

WAR was troublesome graphically until I upgraded, and even then, it just didnt pull me in im affraid. Maybe if i'd been playing nothing else, it would have had me ;) .. but the crafting system? Oh dear me.

WoW has just added a new Raid that looks awsome, the Argent Tornament jousting is shaping up to be pretty engaging too. Very interested in how we'll be able to represent different factions and such.

Fianlly PvP that has a bit of honor to it.

I think AoC is better than WoW, which a lot of people would like to smack me over the head for saying that. I like WAR better than WoW, and I'm sure a whole OTHER group of people would like to smack me over the head for saying that.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy my time in WoW, but I've moved on.

It's all opinion based. This site tends to be anti-WoW. WoW still holds a place in my heart and deserves a 7 in my book, but I just enjoy WAR and AoC more than I do WoW at this time.

    sooooooooooo...it's all based on opinion.

In that case, i've no place being here it seems.

My opinion (in your opinion) stinks!

... and I thought review sites were supposed to give a non biased rating. How wrong I was.

  • Perdition_ukPerdition_uk Member Posts: 181

It's not an inpartial review site, especially as far as rating games. Ratings are essentially a poll of site user opinion (well, the users that can be bothered to vote). WoW players have less to prove, small or niche game players feel they have a responsibility to support their game so they vote more.

As for opinion, that's all 99% of internet forum posts are. State your opinion because you feel it's a valid point of view. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make you wrong, or your opinion any less valid.
