Good Guys vs. Bad Guys

mviratamvirata Member UncommonPosts: 55

Hi all!

Just curious how you guys play your MMO's, do you go Good Guy or Bad Guy?  For me, I always play the Good Guys.  In WOW I was Alliance and in WAR I am Order.  My friend at work who wanted to play with me had to play a Good Guy because I refused to play a bad guy.  He also wanted full PVP so he can Gank people.  I called him a douch bag and said if I saw him do that I would kill him on the spot, lol.

So we got into a debate about the Good Guy Vs. Bad Guy.  In an MMO I like to pretend that my character is an extension of me, and that if I was part of this fake world, I would act in the manner I normally do now.  I would make decisions, career choices, and choose abilities that somewhat mirror my real life.  IE.  If it is offered, I spent alot of time cooking because I like to cook.  I spend less time with Blacksmthing because I have no interest in it.

Obviously people in MMO's who play Bad Guys and are probably really cool in real life.  They are more interested in playing someone that they are NOT.  I say obviously because a true Bad Guy would be in jail right now and not playing MMO's.  Ganking people in reali life, usually means jail time and I don't think Charles Manson is playing a High Elf White Lion.

Now I am not bashing the Bad Guy players in MMO's in fact I love that they are there because if there weren't any then there would be no ass to kick.

So anyway, I am just curious as to how you guys play your MMO's  Good Guys or Bad Guys and maybe a few reasons why.

I liked the bad guy role, Honestly. Evil races just seemedd to have more appeal. I enjoyed the PvP although I nevcer thought of myself as vicious. I may have been a merciless undead warrior....but I always /saluted after I kill you

Good guy, because bad guys in most MMOs are a bunch of jokes anyways.

Bad guy if it's offered.  Not that I don't dabble in the good side but bad is always a wee bit more alluring.

I prefer games that have less of a black and white view to them. In WoW, the Alliance is probably far worse than the Horde, especially with Varian Wrynn at the helm. In Warhammer it's all pretty much grey, even though most people think "humans, elves, and dwarfs, they must be good lawl!" In truth, destruction holds the moral high ground.

But when I played EQ2... Well, I could never get in to that. The writing behind the world was just so poor and juvenile that I could never get absorbed into my character or the world. Lucan D'Lere is evil for evils sake. Antonia Bayle is good for goods sake. There's nothing believable about the world or the characters, and that's saying something considering we're talking about high fantasy.

As for what "side" I usually choose... Well, I normally go with the darker side simply because I can identify with villains, outcasts, and sadists much more easily than brainwashed, gods-fearing peasantry. It's also much easier to find moral high ground when playing darker characters, and calling the core beliefs of so-called "good" characters into question is great fun in RP.

Of course I'm sure no one will believe me when I say that the roles of good and evil are typically reversed in high fantasy, so I suppose much of my post is moot.

Sigh...   Developers really have that order vs. chaos thing wrong.   Order=entire universer nothing but solide hydrogen equaly dispersed through out it   Chaos=the universe pre-big-bang and having no form whatsoever.

As for me I just play whatever race has the biggest appeal to me, and the most interesting lore quirk.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Wow. I haven't seen anything blown that far out of proportion since that time I tried acid.

Neither i'm neutral, no matter what theres no good, or bad race in games for me, if i gain profit from doing something good then i do it. If i gain profit from doing something bad i do it. Not in real life of course just in games.

I usually start a mmo by choosing what class I really want to play regardless of faction. Otherwise I tend to play a good guy and have tried doing the bad guy thing but eventually go back to good. Would explain why in EVE I didn't get much pvp because I focused on defending.

I'm not a fan of any game where one group is good and one is bad -- that's just bad storytelling, in my opinion.  Sure, it's one one of the key aspects of High Fantasy, but god is it boring.

I play whatever class has the coolest starting area, and act nice no matter what.

When Persia goes to war with Greece, who is the good guy?

When Sparta goes to war with Athens, who is the good guy?

    No one.

Are the Horde of WoW bad?  They struggle to make a living, against the undeads, and against the alliance.  If alliance is so good, we won't have arthalas (joke).

If you are thinking of the community quality, well that makes an argument.  From your writing you do not seem to be looking in that aspect.  Personally, I found that the alliance side of WoW to be full of kids.  Why?  During school hours, alliance side is usually deserted, and outnumbered in pvp.  During holiday breaks, you have a hard time finding a free chair to sit down on the alliance side (joke again about chairs).

Surprisingly WAR gives us the reverse.  The order side seems to be more mature, while the chaos side looks like the barrens chat, at least in the few guild chats I happen to get involved in.

I usually try out all the starter races, and then settle down on one I feel comfortable, or unsub.

I usually play the race/faction I think has the coolest backstory/history, and if none have backstory/history, then whichever race looks coolest in eng game armor. If every race has the same looking armor AND there is no bakcstory/history, I pick the faction with the chicks with the biggest mellons.

Alliance != Good and Horde != Evil.

Check out the lore for each race. The Undead are about the most humane creatures of the whole lot, and the trolls have more of an issue with the orcs than they do with humans.

Besides, you can't find anything further from 'good' than gameplay in WOW and similar RvR MMOs.

No chance of negotiation and no diplomacy. No exchange of territory and no conquest - the entire game is designed to provide and promote an endless cycle of mindless slaughter. You simply murder the other side because they aren't on your side.

This actually extends into PvE in almost every MMO as well. The mobs are not raiding the players' towns or even attacking them. Look at WAR, where one race gets sent to the beach to kill the evil bad guys.... 'evil bad guys' that are doing nothing but just standing around on the beach. Your job? Murder them.

And you will, without question as to what this race did to deserve annihilation... you will murder every last one that you need to in order to get your bag of coins.

The good guys? The good guys in MMOs are the trolls in their village minding their own business, hoping and praying another pack of adventurers doesn't roll in to murder them all and then hack their ears off to bring them back to the sick bastard in town that has a depraved desire for a warehouse full of body parts.

It is very rare in an MMO for the players to be the good guys.

Good guy... even in Games like KOTOR when I try to play dark side i can't do it. "Bad guy" in MMOs too often just gives people an excuse to crap on other paying customers for kicks.

As for definitions of good and evil, so not getting into that.... but given a scenario in a game with a choice of "do the morally right thing" or "screw someone over", generally I'll end up being a good guy.

I don't really go for the "good" vs "bad" thing; I tend to just go for the underdog.

If there's a race that's had the crap kicked out of it, been exploited and abused for generations and has finally, after an epic struggle, managed to achieve a measure of freedom .. that's generally my choice.

In WoW I went for Orc, in EVE it was Minmater.

Well I can agree, the black and white thing is never truly black and white.  I mean there were good Germans in WW2 and there were bad Americans.  In a fantasy settings just because it is Order doesn't mean the Dwarves and Elves kiss and make up.  They just agree to take out the common enemy and I am sure will go back to Warring once it's all said and done.  I mean in LOTR Gondor and Rohan never got along.  So yes Good and Evil is not truly Black and White but there are 2 distinct sides.

I guess it depends on what "side" you are on when it comes to evil.  I mean to an evil person good is well.... Evil.

  • CactusmanXCactusmanX Member Posts: 2,218

I don't like the Good vs Evil thing that much.  Usually  the good guys are characterized as selfless, puppy hugging, golden shrowded heroes that stand against all that is impure and the bad guys are just sulky types that are stupidly evil because someone has to.

Why have a wholely malecious or wholely benevolent side, why not just two groups of people that end up of fighting each other for stupid things like politics but are actually really similar.  And nothing is good or evil only thinking makes it so, so it is totally subjective and makes things more interesting.

But to answer the question, whichever side humans are on and whichever side looks the least stereotypical.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
