After the last sailing article, a lot of people wanted me to find out about the larger ships. Well I did just that, and last night I was able to tag along on one to get you the information. You can find the article HERE.
Thanks!

The ships do look like a lot of fun.

Awwwww!
I want one...NOW!
After just experiencing exploring with a raft, this is making me drool. Piracy could be a reality in this game.

"Warhulks are faster and more maneuverable. If you score the warhulk with the twin flame throwers on it you can destroy a ship in a matter of seconds.
I fully expect warhulks to replace the pricey and slow ships for naval warfare."

I'll probably talk with him again today. They enjoyed having me tag along, so with any luck I should be able to get my hands on a War Hulk for another article soon.

The speed disparity is probably one of the biggest things they should fix.
It makes sense that a flame-throwing WarHulk would be a nemesis to wooden ships.
The advantages of ships being:
I disagree with your analysis from the article about it making sense that a large ship (with even larger sails) would be slower than a puny raft with a single simple sail.
The ship is built to slice through the water efficiently despite it's large mass. The size and amount of sails it brings to bear more than make up for it's larger size.
The raft on the other hand is the most primitive and basic of sea-faring vessels. It more closely resembles a barge than a ship. Barges are not exactly known for their speed.
Do a bit of research on the pirate ships of yester-year. I think you will find that the schooners and clippers used by pirates were some of the fastest ships to ever set sail.
You might be right in terms of travel speed, but the speed of the turning radius would probably be slower on a larger boat. When I had the steering wheel, I tried to turn the boat hard to the side and it was far less responsive than the rafts were.

I like the fact that they are hard to handle, but they DEFINITELY need to travel faster than freaking rafts.

Yes, I would agree with you and Paragus on that point.
The harder to handle and the turning radius would make sense as a down-side to a larger ship over a raft.
The speed issue should be a no-brainer that the Raft is the slowest though. The largest ship shouldn't necessarily be the fastest (Man 'O War) but considering the cost of that beast I think that would be a fair concession to gameplay over reality.
Considering the sentiments of those posting on the official forums I think it safe to say that we will be seeing quite a bit of "tweaking" with both Ships/Rafts and WarHulks.
Some are already complaining they do way too much damage.
Some are complaining that they are too slow.
Some are complaining they are too easy to damage.
The list goes on.
I think the true test of Aventurine's abilities to run a MMO are about to be put to the test. Most seasoned veteran's of MMOs are willing to give them a bit of leeway in their first few months. (Even with Tasos' previous statements of readiness).
As more and more clans and guilds start producing WarHulks and Ships this will become an even bigger item of priority to balance correctly.
It still amazes me that someone from Aventurine thought that NOT Beta-testing all this stuff in actual gameplay with real players was a good idea.
Point one: Hull speed of a ship is related to the ship's length along the waterline on a displacement hull. Therefore a long skinny ship will be faster everything else being equal.
Point Two: Rafts don't have cannon, so they should be easy pickings for any warship as should any warhulk. The warship should be able to engage way beyond the range of the flamethrowers on a warhulk.
Yes the ships would be less maneuverable but since they would be over 4 times faster then a raft it really wouldn't matter besides size should win when they turn and you get rammed.
Not a bad video actually, though I have to say PotBS is so much better but then what do you expect it is a sailing sim.
Looks damn awesome!
If you want to hire Machete to kill the bad guys, you better make damn sure the bad guy isnt you!
yes, you'd expect so wouldn't you... then again ships was *all* that potbs had, more or less.

Actually the Avatar fighting was just about as bad as it is in Dork-n-Fail. The Avatars all ran around like they had sticks shoved up their collective asses just like in DnF. They had only a couple of different movements, just like DnF.
One thing they did have over DnF is that they looked a hell of a lot better and not everyone had trained the exact same skill set like DnF. Oh also PoTBS had a hell of a lot more in depth crafting system the DnF will ever have.
Gee I guess other then some FFA PVP there really isn't much to DnF that PoTBS (a failure by most all standards BTW) didn't have. Oh my bad, I forgot you can loose your ship and cargo in PoTBS that you have worked hard to get. So yep full loot also.
