Total- no idea.
Any Given time, between 4000 and 12000 people in the same world.
Keep in mind in the total thing- is that the wife and I have 2 accounts each, and CCP recently had a promotion encouraging people to open 2nd accounts with a discounted rate- so who knows actually how many PHYSICAL people are playing.. Accounts may be able to be deteremined. Check www.eve-online.com
Cool, I would like to try Eve out. Is there a free trial offer for me to get a taste of it? I havent played a space MMORPG yet. Any advice or insight into the game? How's the community and PvP?

There are numerous posts in the discussion forum about advice on what to do to get started- spend some time reading through them.
My best advice I can offer:
Try and build a balanced char attributes wise. Keep Charisma low, you dont need it much- unless you plan to do missions- but trust me they get tedious and eventually suicidal.
Dont be fooled into thinking that owning a battleship is the ultimate in eve game play. Frigate/Cruiser based PvP is HUGELY fun, in fact some people I know wont fly a battleship even though they can afford them.
Get yourself into a player based corporation as soon as you can- and learn from the people you play with. If in 2 months time you're still with the newbie corp you started with- you'll get tired of the game REAL FAST.

According to this story, over 50,000 accounts, it doesn't specify whether those are active though.
Actually on second thought, those could include alt characters (3 per account) also...

does it? Are alt characters not pilots too?
well either way ccp is making a killing off of accounts alone f there are 50k active accouts that is 9mil per year. Definately a good game for the money though. I hope they are fixing lag so that when more people come it prevenets it from getting even worse than it already is

Well its Exodus day today, an upgrade of the client, content and gameplay.
This is one of the reasons that EVE is so good, free expansions no money grabbing corporation (unlike in the game its self)
So come try EVE out!

Basically it's a whole new game, for free, and which all players can access all content straight away.
I've been playing a year and this expansion really feels like I'm getting away with something, like someone just gave me a new game for no reason.
It also makes it feel like the world is evolving, and this evolution is being shaped by the players themselves. Example? Corporations (guilds essentially) informally created alliances to claim areas of the map (it's a necessity because all players are in the same server, and no single corporation can control an area on their own in practise).
These alliances were not foreseen by the developers, but in the expansion, the map will show and update these alliances, and the alliance "leaders" were asked to submit a logo which will become that alliance's logo in game!

Yay for Exodus! Exodus should be a reason just to pick up the game. The new content like deployable stations, dungeon-type complexes, new ships, etc will blow the doors open for this game. If anyone wants a trial code, email cupp221@comcast.net
Yes. But no matter how much player are online the game is fast and stable.
If you like scifi-games try EVE! There is even a good german community..

?? lagg .... running 3 clients simultanously on one puter - no lagg even if i launch 33 drones at the same time and pummle others with cruise. is all a matter of hardware. just invested in the extreame edition cpu with a nice shiny new asusmobo. is now running smooth like melting butter and im watching dvd on the side on the secondary monitor. even with an ordinairy p4 2.4 and a 9700pro with 1 gig ram that setup was sufficiant to run that scenario, but im picky when it comes to top-of-the-line hardware (
i rarley leave the basement with fridge, batterybackups, microwave, sleepingback, boxes with food in cans and an outdoor generator for the worst case scenario of a blackout, so plenty of funds available).
i just couldn't figure out how to run it on a G5 with windows emulator, some essentials still are not implemented. once it would work i guaranty that the game will get another 10k subcribers. here many n00b designer freshs from school are using mac laptops only. afterall they still depending on the easy to use GUI from mac without having to know how the puter works.
btw that is the first forumsoftware where i cannot see a buttom or tree to get back to the index...anone found it hidden one or so ?
There isn't a 14 day trial any more. It ended long ago...
I'm trying to get cash to pay for a subscription... It really rocks.

Yeah, due to timezone limitations only about 10-12 max of the total 50k users are online at any one time.
