I have never understood this kind of behavior. Right now I don't play any MMO's but when I did play I didn't spend all my free time lurking these forums. I PLAYED the game. Also if I saw someone badmouth my game, I didn't feel the need to write 10 pages of text explaining how that person knows nothing and how the game is awesome. During my most active time of playing, you know how many posts I wrote? None. Why the need to defend AoC so passionately? [Mod Edit]
well, people come to forums to discuss their games, get opinions, tips, tricks, guilds, make friends who share the same passion etc... thats what forums are for. and from time to time they disagree with other users and start an argument. that is very normal behavior not very difficult to understand at all.
but what is really wierd is people who are on a forum of a game which they do not like and dont play, making argument about things they dont understand or never experienced with people that they dont understand.
Yeah but this is exactly what they are NOT doing!
There are many posters here who write two different kinds of posts:
1. A post where they say AoC is amazing and how everyone should subscribe to it
2. A post where they attack someone who said something negative about the game
They are not interested in any of the things you listed. It seems all they try to do is make Age of Conan seem like the best game ever. It's pure viral marketing and it's killing these forums.
Why do you care? What does it do to YOU as a person. Does it personally ruin your marriage (sorry, whatever your relationship is..), steal your car, eat your dog?
Who cares what others do? Just let it be.
Do you also realize that if you did not post so much hate, others would not post love, and eventually it would all go away. and who cares if it does or does not.
although i cant see why the fact of someone posting that he "likes AoC" on a AoC forum is wrong, what you just said is only half the fact, to be more accurate and more faire to all users on this forum you should add the other half which is:
3. A post where they say AoC and/or Funcom is a total waist of time, money and space and how AoC is a totally broken unplayable game by all standards.
4. A post where they attack someone who said something positive about the game and consider him as a Funcom secret agent.
I find it childish when people talk about "secret agents" and "conspiricy theories".
Why is it so strange that Funcom developers come here and defend AoC incognito? You have any idea how EASY that is? It's unbeliavably easy and can actually get potential customers to subscribe. Think about it. All you need is 10 Funcom employees who post positive crap all day and gang up on anyone who says anything negative.
Ask yourself what would you do? You worked with an MMO for 5 years and launch was a disaster. 90% of players quit and rest of them are thinking about leaving. Do you just roll over and die? Do you let your company go bankcrupt and go stand in an unemployment line? No. You do whatever it takes to get more people to subscribe in hopes of saving the game and the company.
On one hand I feel for Funcom devs. I know they worked hard and are under a lot of pressure. First they work 14 hour days and then they go home and have to write posts in forums like this one. It really sucks for them but that's how this western market economy works. Age of Conan was a bad product and this is what happens when you launch a bad product.
People are only defending a game they feel is coming under attack.
By attack I mean crtiticism that is either totally unconstructive, ill-informed, heavily biased or a combination of all three. Opinions are worthless to me. I'm not going to make a judgement on something based on the opinion of someone I don't even know. However some people will, particularly if that's all the information they've got to go on and their gaming time/money is precious. That doesn't mean those people are necessarily dumb or easily led, it just means they can't risk piling time/money/effort into something that may suck, even if it doesn't.
Listening to malicious turds carp on about how inferior something is 'just becasue they don't like it' will sway some players unjustly, thus impacting on the games playbase/potential player base and spoiling the game for others who do enjoy it. As I've posted before, MMO's are all about the playerbase. Even the best game will die if it only has a handful of players. So slandering a game has the effect of slowly killing it by posioning is lifeblood: the playerbase.
AoC has a lot of very vocal detractors who don't care much for the expression 'forgive and forget'. People who enjoy the game do not wish these people to ruin because of their own vendetta.

The reason AoC is defended so vehemently is its target audience are 18-25 children.
The game was targeted towards the immature kiddie market with:
1. Simplistic Repetitive combat system
2. Sex and Nudity - Immature content targeted towards immature kiddie audience.
3. Pretty Graphics - Flash over substance. Kiddies who lack patience need constant eye candy and excitement with little to no thought involved.
4. Immature content - Decapitations, violence, vulgarity and profanity. Guaranteed to attract the 18-25 year old kiddies.
5. I am sure with much thought this list could go on much longer.
Quite simply the this game was made for the kiddies and the kiddies will defend their decision against all logic, evidence and disregard Funcom's unethical behavior and bait and switch marketing.
I have never understood this kind of behavior. Right now I don't play any MMO's but when I did play I didn't spend all my free time lurking these forums. I PLAYED the game. I guess we could ask...why does one person like McDonalds, yet another likes Burger King..You like Coke? I like Pepsi? I like the Lakers you like the Bulls....
See how this goes?
You hated the game, and do not want to play. Others do. I for example prefer Age of Conan over the multitude of other crap currently out.
This then brings out the fervent need for others to be the defenders, the ones who state their opinion about what you have gotten wrong..
Thus, we always return to it is "opinion".
You have the right to give yours, but don't expect those who ARE happy with a product to take it laying down. They are allowed to give theirs as well.
Good luck in your future endeavors. But, do not expect sympathy from players of a game they like, that you do not.

how come you find it childish and you believe in it at the same time !
the same can be said about the other kind of people, maybe they are Funcom's ex-employees who actually released a buggy game and got fired, or rival corp employees, who knows? its a crazy forum after all.
my point is that people can say whatever they want on forums and claim a lot of stuff that is not true, but the only ones that are to be taken seriously are the one who can support their arguments by proof or at least common sense.

Sex and nudity are not immature, are not negative and are not a "kiddie thing".
Sex and nudity are in everyday life, in art expression and social experiences... moralist attitudes like yours never sound "mature", only repressed, arrogant and out of touch with human reality.
"the game" dies and dies, but fcom really need the money, at the moment they producing a new f-mmo and they have maybe some investors who want see some positive progresses. hyping is not only a typical fanboy hobby, today this is one part of the marketing. it's a trap!

You and that other guy fail to understand what I am asking. I am NOT asking "Why you like AoC?". I am asking Why the need to DEFEND it so passionately?
Do you stand outside a shop with a "Coke sucks! Pepsi is the best!" -sign? No. Why? Because you don't give a shit what those other people drink,
I dont think AoC is childish. Everyone who says that never played it. Wow is childish, with its graphics, with paladins on motor cycles and gnomes with pink hairs. But AoC is just like the Conan World should be.

Oh, we understand all right, but you dont read our anwser, or you simply ignore them. So after a couple of tries I simpy give up trying to be logical.
But to answer why I defned AoC. I reply to what I beleve is wrong. I tell people when I think they have their facts wrong. Like in your case you put some statements out there and fail to provide links or external references. Your excuse is " i cant be bothered searching". (darkfall discussion and craig said 100K players)

I don't think anyone has said AoC childish. What people are saying is that it's designed in a way that attracts kids. You really think digital boobs are the way to get ADULTS into the game? Maybe some 30-year old virgins but the majority of adults have seen real boobs after which digital ones are not that great.
It's this label of "mature" game that has brought so many emo kids in AoC. In my experience Age of Conan has more immature kids than your average korean grinder.
You and that other guy fail to understand what I am asking. I am NOT asking "Why you like AoC?". I am asking Why the need to DEFEND it so passionately?
Isnt this kind of a dumb question because the answer is pretty obvious? People defend it because they are passionate about something that they enjoy. If forums only had people who hated a game, and you were looking for a game, and only saw the negatives, you might be less apt to give a game a shot, because you would see very little positive being said about it. MMO's need sub's, and fans like what they like, nobody wants to see their game go under.
There is your answer.....they are passionate about what they enjoy. The better question might be asking why haters spend so much time posting. If they dont enjoy something, then why waste a minute more talking about it? Why not move on to something else that they do enjoy? Unless of course they also feel passionately.
So really, why ask the question? The answer is fairly self evident, and seems like the only real reason is to get a rise out of folks.

Why people need to defend the game? Because it can't defend itself at the moment. Look at EVE, LOTRO and WOW.. you don't have really 'emotional' defenders of those games because the game and subscriptions speak for themselves. When you go to AOC, War or DF... you have the real 'defenders' because the game can't defend itself. Cornered animals are most dangerous. Even the most innocent 'suggestions' get slammed on this forum.
And to all the talk about ' nudity and swearing' not being immature. Get a gripe. NOBODY over the age of 25 would say " oh, this game is so mature because they say the F word". When Funcom spent so much time bragging and advertising the nudity and cursing, they were targeting the 16-20 year olds who think it was cool that you can see nipples.
You and that other guy fail to understand what I am asking. I am NOT asking "Why you like AoC?". I am asking Why the need to DEFEND it so passionately?

So you are saying fans post here daily because they don't want to see their game go under?
Then how can we trust they tell the truth? I think it's reasonable to assume that they just might bend the truth to get people to resubscribe. These people with agenda are a big problem on this forum.
The reason is people defend what they like. You like your family therefore you would most likely defend it. Another reason is there are a multitude of people out there that played at launch and are still spreading misinformation saying the game is exactly the same. Its not therefore people have to step forward and show that these people don't know what they're talking about.

I'll try going slower here.
If someone feels passionately about something, they speak to it, be it positively or negatively. In both cases they'll end up coming off as having an agenda. Do you think that the people come here posting spew and venom are telling the truth or are their perceptions colored as well?
Either or, it's still a dumb question, people defend or attack passionately because they have passionate feelings, one way or the other about it.
Im going to flip the question, if people are having fun and you obviously have moved on why not have fun in the games you play why post here, whats the point?

I am very happy to see more and more people happy with their choice to return to AoC being overwhelmingly positive and new people wih new experiences in game being positive. At the end of the day people are having fun and thats what counts.
It is also not suprising that someone with a history like the OP who ignores flat out questions (proven here again) can simply not take that the game is undeniably in better shape. Now that is fun to watch and read. Same thing happened a few months back when took off on hiatus because the turn around started, just as it steps up a gear with successful free trials.... "here's jonnny!"
Most AoC players are elder than average, jobs, wifes, children and so on. Reading and posting from other PC's that aren't regular is going to happen.
If someone hates something it is human to move on and let go, you get the odd person you clings to the foot (for ex BF/GF) those are the people you feel really sorry for. On the other hand to balance things up, there is a reason why someone enjoys something and PAYS for it. It is called justiciation via monetry purchase.
Rule #1 never trust a internet forum or review for a unbiased opinion on a product. Personal friends recommendations is about the only real source of finding the true value of anything. Viral marketing is rampant in making both extreme pro and extreme negative posts. Honest reviews by professional reviewers are also hard to come by.
That does not just apply to games either. Case in point. I just bought a cheap ( $750 USD) 1911 style pistol which has a terrible internet reputation but a personal friend from my shooting club bought one a year ago and has had great luck with it so I decided to take a chance on one. Darn thing shoots better than my $3 K custom built match gun. But if all you have to go by is the more popular 1911 pistol forums you would think it would be the biggest POS ever made.
If you really want to see if a game works out for you try it yourself, ignore all flamers, fanboys and haters. None of them is going to give you honest opinion.
There is a reason for trials, try it. Make it a rule to never trust people like Amazing Avery or some random fanboy who defends AOC passionately or a hater who hates it with equal passion. All of these people have their vested interests in game and you will never get an unbiased opinion. one will always go to extreme to defend his love or hate.
Thats why i ignore the viral marketers, haters and fanboys. I wait for trial, just like i did for AOC. Played it for good two weeks and decided not to sub. Thats how you are supposed to decide regardless of what others tell you.

I agree with you there Jackdog. If you can't try something for free then you only have your own trusted sources to go by.
I just got a 28" monitor inet reviews said was crap, turned up 2 days ago and is perfect in my opinion.
Thing is you swear by your pistol being good now as you have that hands on experience and if someone came along and said it was crap, in your mind that is not right is it. With an mmorpg, you continuely pay and invest time into that, you feel justified in putting your opinion across and it swings both ways too.

Well, by the same token, why do people feel the need to constantly bash, for months on end, something they are not playing? It's kinda a two way street there

Thing is Avery is that AOC is a lot like that Taurus. While it is far and away the best value of it's kind for less than $1000 USD and a damn good starter gun for getting into competition it is miles from being a Ed Brown custom when it comes to the fit and finish, customer service and other details. AoC is not a Vanguard or Horizons but it still has a ways to go before I would call it a top shelf MMO. Maybe after 1.05 I will give it another try.
But at any rate I think anyone who is fence sitting should really give the free trial a shot and maybe even go for a months sub to see if they like it. 15 bucks is chump change.

Age of Conan was a bad product and this is what happens when you launch a bad product.
how come you find it childish and you believe in it at the same time !
the same can be said about the other kind of people, maybe they are Funcom's ex-employees who actually released a buggy game and got fired, or rival corp employees, who knows? its a crazy forum after all.
my point is that people can say whatever they want on forums and claim a lot of stuff that is not true, but the only ones that are to be taken seriously are the one who can support their arguments by proof or at least common sense.
Sex and nudity are not immature, are not negative and are not a "kiddie thing".
Sex and nudity are in everyday life, in art expression and social experiences... moralist attitudes like yours never sound "mature", only repressed, arrogant and out of touch with human reality.
...
"the game" dies and dies, but fcom really need the money, at the moment they producing a new f-mmo and they have maybe some investors who want see some positive progresses. hyping is not only a typical fanboy hobby, today this is one part of the marketing. it's a trap!
Hate inspire Fanbois to post in defence and visa versa, basically sums it up

Just my 2 cents though.

[Mod Edit]
