I am thinking about trying EQ 2 and just have a few questions.
How is the level grind?
Lets say i cant find a good group, is soloing a viable option for me?
Or do i have to sit around and wait till i join a good group?
Is it true every level after 19 is a "hell" level?
Comments
The grind depends on your group. If you can complete your "combat wheels", you can kill mobs fairly quick and speed up your XP gain. So far I have made it to level 16 and I am still able to solo. Leveling is much faster with a group though. It never really takes too long to find a group. Well, at least from my experiences so far. I hear the level grind becomes slower the higher you become in level, but that seems to be the case for most MMORPGs anyway. Keep in mind that I have only reached level 16, so my experience with the game is somewhat limited.

It's a great game...You get out what you put in. If you have no pactence then you might get fusterated. It's a fantasy game so even though it has great graphics you still need to use your imagination.
If you can't find a group you can still have tons of fun roleplaying or doing something other than "grinding" It doesn't matter what game you play, if it has levels, it will eventrually get very tiedious. It's up to you to deceide how much fun you'r willing to have.
If you don't enjoy an aspect of the game, don't put yourself in a situation that would require you to interact that way.
Give it a chance and play it as it is (a game) and you'll have a good time.
Soling is really only viable until about lvl 12+ after that most quests you go on require that you are in a group. The critters even have a tag under their name that says "GROUP" or "SOLO". After you leave qeynos (don't know about Freeport but I am sure it is the same) most critters out there are tied together and even if you fight a critter 2 levels under you and if it is marked as "GROUP" you will have a tuff time killing it. However most the time you select a critter, 3 or more will also be selected. So you will notice that it becomes pretty much group forced to continue any questing. Infact I have over 80 quests I have completed, but I still have over 30 I am working on and I really ca't do any of them unless I have a group. If you aren't a healer or a tank no one will really want you in their group. One reason why is because if you die or anyone else in the group dies, you also get vitae or as they call it in EQ2 a XP debt that will need to be worked off.
There may be other things to do like hiding in a basement working on tradeskills or walking around looking for things to gather for your tradeskills, but as for RPing like the other one said here, Well I play on Lucan DLere which is a RP Preferred and trust me the word PREFERRED is underlined, meaning you are not forced to RP. So what happens is you get 50% of anti-RP coming on making chars of names that are so off the wall more RP time is spending on telling others to stop using shout as ooc or stop using shout as the auction server or seeing who can get the most petitions on names others are using that they want removed because it interfers with their immersion. The most RPing I see in game is Greetings <insert name here> then they wave /wave then look around and then go on their marry way. I try to role play with some, but the majority just does a greeting and then walks off. If you do a LFG in ooc they don't respond, if you do it in shout then you are talking ooc in shout and no one then will answer. if you talk about it in public chat and saying it in character. Most of the time they just look at you and walk off. I guess I should have made a healer, right?
I thought FFXIO was bad about this forced grouping, but so far EQ2 takes the cake...Plus they all obviously speak english so there goes that excuse for most people being asian and hate americans, right? Oh just immagine EQ2 in 6 months. I would hate to be starting then, You better hope there are other people working on new characters or you are in big trouble if there is no one your leve on your server in your zone at the time you are playing...Hmm, I guess an admin deleted my post about selling my EQ2 account. Oh well I guess I am not suppose to do it aye? hehe
Oh well, Time to go to EBay.
As stated by the devs: soloing is possible, even after level 20 (which I am, and I can solo fine). But it will not be the path of least resistance. Somehow my very informative post in reaction to someone who said that soloing isn't possible got deleted. Could be because I copy/pasted the stuff... Well, here's the link, it's an interesting read for everyone who thinks soloing will not be viable in EQ2...

I don't believe in God with a capital G and, despite their obvious solidity, I don't believe in the gods with their small g's. Not as real forces in the universe. But I believe in the bitch-goddess Irony. She crosses all time. She rules men and gods and God alike. And She has a wicked sense of humor.

You may have forced grouping past 15 or so, but it is easy to find a group.

I'm only level 13, but if my friends aren't on and I can't find a group I'm usually able to go solo. If a particular quest is too difficult for me alone I shelve it and do some easier ones. I've never run out of quests I can do alone, be they fedEx-types or hunting. And questing gives great XP rewards!
