the biggest thing i've seen problems with is class balance... look at the table top game.... your not gonna see "mirrored" classes.. each class or unit peice has its own thing, its mostly unique... might share somthing with its race but generally thats all... if i'm playing an elf.... i don't want an orc being anything like me ( swordmaster black orc mirror) as for the melee dps classes added... slayer.... should have been left to the npc's by the game lore itself you can't have an hornorable death if all you have to do is hit respawn and pay a few silver to healer to be back up and running... woulda made for some crap books if that were the case ( gotrek and felix novels) the whole combat system needs to be revamped classes need a complete revamp
should have more class diversity... not just name changes.. a choppa shouldn't be anything like a slayer two totally different playstyles there .. a witch hunter... should not be like a witch elf ... try being a bit more original.
you just need the main 4.... dps, tank, healer, sneeksy ... have some diversity... humans tank healer and a mix of dps and sneek ... dwarves.... mix tank with dps and toss in a tank with healing ... then for giggles keep the engineer for pure dps... dwarves have always been sturdy tough buggers... tank should be mixed with everything they are..
you only have to look at the basic descriptions of the races to see what you should mix the classes with .. dwarves sturdy and tough... tank... elves fast nimble ... dps humans really should be a mix of all..
on the destruction side... orcs .... big brutes tank and dps mix's dark elves should be stealth mix's chaos... its mostly all about disorder so you could have the mains.... all be hybrids anti paladin types and the like..
the meain thing is mirrored classes blow... because for one they are not balanced.. a choppa will lay waste to a slayer of the same level... or even higher if his gear is good..
a chosen will win a fight between a knight of the blazing sun at same levels... the only ones that are really an actual fair fight are the ranged dps and healing classes..... cept the DOK they are more like a dps class not a healer lol
*dons flame proof jacket and reads disclamer*
everything above is my own opinion gathered from playing both the table top version and war online.. nothing should be taken as fact, and i am 100% open to critisism if its constructive, flames will be dealth with by the de-flaminator..... a thing of goblin design that adds flamers to ignore

As has been stated numerous times, the mirrors share game mechanics, not necessarily roles in-game. Given your example, while the SM and BO share the same mechanic, their abilities are different, and they have different roles in the game - in short, they play differently.
Each of the classes has strengths and weaknesses, and there are few that everyone agrees are either totally over- or underpowered (opinions vary, though I find your contention that Chosen are better than Knights humerous to say the least).
One thing I will say - if you take a look at either the WHA or official forums, just about everyone thinks their class is at a disadvantage, and that other classes are better. A sort of "grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". With everyone complaining pretty much the same way, that leads me to believe that the classes are balanced a lot better than popularly thought.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
The famous rule of thumb "Balance is achieved when all classes complain equally"
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I agree that the "mirrors" need to be more diverse kind of like the SH/WL and MARA/SW these classes use similar basic mechanics (Pets or Stances) but play totally different so different in fact that most people dont think thier mirrors at all.
I don't think the game needs a complete combat/class revamp. I do think that as time goes on mythic should push each mirror further and further away from eachother.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
i would agree with that... that the mirrors need to be pushed further and further apart...
but as for the BO and swordmaster... granted i've never played wither higher than maybe 13th..... or 14th...
they both seemed exactly alike to me just abilities named different.. press one attack to get balanced/whatever the orc one is, that opens another set ... hit that for perfect balance, whatever the orcs is lol then hit your finnisher to start over again..
as for class balance.. in a fight myself as a 15th slayer, and 2 other slayers lower level i think 10 and 13 ish... one 18th choppa slaughtered us all with ease barely even taking damage... only reason i know it was only us 3 was it was in the crypt of weapons T2 and no one else was around we chased him in....... to our doom lol now i know orcs are .... probly stronger than dwarves but that was rediclous .. we were all technically the same level ( orc mighta been 20, his name was yella now that i am thinkin about it more ) we being bolstered to 18 i know does make a large difference laking the abilities... but it would seem that 3 on 1 would have a chance at least... *shrug*

at lower levels you are looking at a difference in available skills. Meaning the orc has way more buttons to press than you.
First of all, Warhammer Online is NOT Warhammer Fantasy Battles. They are two entirely different games based on the Warhammer IP.
As to the mirroring, that's a game design mechanic that's here to stay whether you like it or not. Play styles between mirrors are deliberately similar to prevent players complaining about hwo they like how Warrior Priests play, but they want to play Destruction. Furthermore, it helps provide some degree of balance between the two sides, and any imbalances between mirror classes ultimately come down to the more minor differences instead of core class mechanics.
Your specific example of 3 on 1 combat isn't exactly something you can judge balance by. First of all, the difference between a level 20 choppa and a slayer below level 18 is fairly significant, especially considering how fragile choppas and slayers are. Second, you chased the guy into the crypt of weapons, which is an excellent place for an AoE heavy class like the choppa to set up an ambush. I can only imagine that the choppa unleashed a massive flurry of AoE and happened to survive the fight by simple virtue of having more HP from the level advantage.
