I played in both stress tests and in the open beta . . and I thank Blizzard for that because SOE did not do the same with EQ2. I think WoW is a fine game, and it certainly ran smooth as silk in my experiences with the beta. I never played any of the previous Warcraft titles, and I have only been a MMORPG player for about two years.
If you are a fan of previous Warcraft games or totally disenchanted with the game you are currently playing, I certainly think WoW is worth a look. Personally, I did not find WoW to be all that innovative, as it really offers nothing that other MMORPG's do not have.
I did not particularly feel immersed in this game. What I mean is . . I like to feel that I am part of the world I am playing in. I like to sense danger. I like to hunt. I like to interact with other players. This is where I found WoW to be lacking. I will explain.
I did not feel like I was part of the world because, frankly, I thought the world was pretty ugly. I know some people think WoW is beautiful, but I find it to be extremely cartoon-like with horrid washed-out colors. The character models are not that good and the battles are neither fun or intense. However, unlike EQ2 I appreciate that the world is open for you to roam in without having to zone every 2 minutes (this kills the immersion of EQ2 for me).
I don't feel like I am ever in serious danger in the game. In some MMORPG's I get an adreneline rush simply by trying to stay alive. In all of my time playing WoW, I only died once, and that was because I was foolish . . . not because the game beat me. I LIKE having to be careful, but in my hours and hours of play, I only felt immenent danger only once or twice.
I do not feel like I am hunting when I play WoW. It seems that every mob you look for is confined to a relatively small area of the land. So, if I need to I need to kill something, there are groups of those mobs in one specific area . . and nowhere else. Once you found one mob you are looking for, you've basically found them all. In other MMORPG's a certain type of mob might be spread out over a wide area . . this is simply not the case in WoW.
I did not bond with other players . . .and it was not from lack of trying. Everyone was so silent in the game. At times I felt like I was playing in a world of NPC's instead of real players.
Not to be totally negative, there are several things I appreciated. There are abundant quests, and the quest-givers are easy to find. There is no KSing, which I think is important. There is PvP, which is really the only element of danger in the game . . . and it is fun. There are quite a few emotes, and some of them (like dancing) are out of this world funny.
WoW is every bit as good as some of the other MMORPG's out on the market today, I just don't think it is better than any of them.
That's interesting, Kelsonmac. I feel the exact opposite is true for me. I didn't think I would feel I fit into WoW, but was I sure wrong. I felt the stress of danger-and died many times while hunting. I found the others players to be very social. And I'll take these graphics over clean-looking barbie dolls any day (though I had my objections at first, I will admit). I guess we all have our preferences.
This is how people see wow at it's worst... I'll tell you something though, Kelsonmac, instances are there if you wanna go for a challenge. When a elite quest appears yellow (that is your level) on the quest log, you'll still have trouble doing it and will probably have to run it through the instance and die a few times before you nail it. (I know not all Elite quests are instances but most the starter ones are) At higher levels roaming mobs will eat you up once in a while in non-instance places... you say there's no danger when you have to be looking around for these roamers? I must admit there's no challenge in the newb areas unless you are a newb to MMORPGs, but you should be out of those and in your first instance in two hours max. The graphics are either a turn-off or a turn-on. Personally I love them (most consistant graphics I've seen in an MMORPG ever). I can understand how you don't like the cartooney look, after all not all people like cartoons . Also in my time playing the community has been too noisy. General chat is alway full of people gathering instance parties or asking questions about quests. Don't know what server you were on but it must have been pretty empty. What I like about WoW is that it has somehing to offer to (apparently)nearly everyone. And I presume it will only get better as blizz adds more content.
I dont have much to add, and am a little biased because of my love for warcraft as a rts, but anyways...
I really enjoy this game, infact as much as I enjoyed UO for the first time I logged in there. This game really brings me into it and I feel as if I am a part of the world. Now SWG also did that for me, but the game was just too awful to find any fun. So immersion is not everything to me.
As I reviewed the game, it is all about being able to play as a casual gamer and still accomplish meaningful tasks and gain levels without having to play non-stop for day at a time. I personally cant play massive amount of time anymore (got married and job has bencome too demanding) so this game give me the consumer a way to play and have fun without going insane because I spent 6 hours grinding and didnt get a single level. (DAoC)
Hardcore people will play this game of course, but most will move on to games that require a more "hardcore" playstyle because that will hold their attention for longer. EQ2 will more then likely be the game for those people, not that it is bad, but not my style of gaming.
I am glad this game has been released and hope I can get my hands on a CE copy tonight after my 10hr day here at "the job". I envy those of you who already have it and are playing right now... Cya in game soon though!

ok am not a fanboy also and i played OB and both stresstests.
I have to tell you this mmorpg its really fun and is highly accesible, you have a lot of options to have fun, you can try the pvp, pve grouping, crafting a lot of quest, if you are willing to REALLY TRY the game you will always have something to do...
i havent played eq2 but would dare to say its a less tolkienistic version of eq2 with pvp, really there is nothing that you cant do in wow that you can in eq2...in top of that its got a great history too, so in a way they are both similars, really there is nothing really revolutionary of the genre in both games from what ive read in reviews, it seems like they both take a lot of things from other games, and make it better and more fun, thats is fine by me...
Really the only thing that prevent me of having fun in OB was the insane lag i got from some servers, when there was too many people logged in. Really.
FOr what ive read in the forums, it wasnt fixed!...And they still have the queues system of OB and it was suppose to be temporary, WTF?.
They should gave made the system better, so that a server should support a number of created characters in it, after the limit, no more characters can be created...but of course THEY DIDNT LISTEN in beta, we said many times that they had to fix it, and all we got from funboys is, Is "is beta so STFU"...now same thing in the forums, people say something about lag and they say"is only the first day so STFU"...not good...
And the other thing was the regional server policy crap, really it has nothing to do with the game itself, but it made me think twice about the game, now i heard that there is gonna be the possibility to play from other countries, so lets see.
I would give my opinion, but I've been waiting in the queue line for my server to let me in. Been waiting for 20 minutes, and still have another 15 minutes left... how fun for a retail game.

Only fanboys post here though... I think everyone who posts on MMORPG.com would know enough about MMO news to know when the free tests were...

And thank you for responding in a mature way.
