This website for this game hasn't had but maybe a couple of things added in over the last year. It would suck to be someone who pre-ordered this game, because it's not even close to a beta at all. It would be nice, but they just don't have the development team needed for this kind of project. I hope that someone picks them up and this game can be a success but for now it seems like it is on hold or was a college project turned bad and they actually had to get a real job because there dream isn't paying. As long as SOE doesn't pick this up I am fine with anyone else taking this and running with it.

I am actually one of the people working on this game, and it is going a bit slow. Right now we have 4 people actively working on it, which is not alot. However, we do have a really talented Programer who has all but completed the Alpha engine and is a good deal into completing the beta engine. I am right about to finish all the modeling and texturing going into the female models of this game at the end of this week, maybe even the male models too.
Activity is definetly a problem since all of us do work full-time on other jobs. I really hope we can plop up a beta engine soon, impress some publishers, and get picked up so I can start getting paid and pickup some more workers who can commit to a full-time schedule. However, there is still some angst against doing it since this game will go severely against gameplay in popular mmos today. Which means they may want us to change it and thats a dilemma on this project.
wow, 4 people working on an mmo? Doesn't that sound...like, a bit understaffed?
I hope not there are more than 4 people playing it online at any one time... I like the concept so I thought about downloading the game... the download link didn't have any, uhmmmm..... download link. What gives?
This game will be a good game.
This game will finnish.
There are many games that have less than 4 devs, that even are in alpha testing now.
This game will be so good, it will blow your mind away!
Just read about all the features!
Amen
Please do not hype any gam.. oh wait, nevermind... forgot what forum I was on.
sure. i'll wait...
Developed by 4 people in their spare time?
I checked on your website to see if there were any other screenshots besides the ones here and I saw people can pre-order to get into the beta. I am all in favor of programmers making games in their spare time etc. One of my best friends is a Comp Sci major who now works on Guitar Hero games etc. He and I always threw around the idea of working on a game for fun. But posting your game on the MMORPG list and offering it for pre-order this early in the development stage and that understaffed seems very deceptive.
Is that even legal for you to sell people a copy of your game promising beta testing when the game might not even make it to that stage? That sounds more like people purchasing stock in the developing company rather than pre-ordering.
It's legal in the sense that mmorpgs are the most unregulated business model around. Look at all the games that have come and gone after scamming people out of money ( DnL, Mourning, Phylon, etc. ). Most of us with any sense at all don't buy pre-orders anymore, not even from established companies much less unknown indy devs. I would have thought Cleffy, who has been here a long time and seen this type of activity, would not go the route of "pre-order for a game that might come out".
I am against it. From my understanding not many people have pre-ordered and its advised you don't. But I am not really in control about whats on the website.
4 people????????????? LOLOLOL
Get this off MMORPG.com at once!!!
This isnt a viable MMO and if you pre-ordered you're an idiot.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Im going to have to say shut the hell up Vortigon, have you ever head of a little game called Myst? Made by two guys in their basement, with 2-4 other random people cycling in and out of development.
If they can do it, anyone can. Until an MMO is offically closed by the developers its not closed.

I have watched this game for the last couple years and its been very dissapointing, I really hope you guys complete the game I'm all for it. For those of you looking for a game different like Tatsumaki I would recommend Mortal online, I would tell you all about it but whats the point check it out for yourself.
games like this feed of new gamers
they promise a beta testing and either open a super crappy beta test.....or wait so long that the people forget about the game
the developers then just roll in the cash they pick up from stupid noob gamers
its a common technique used to by new up coming gamers to pay for a larger project
theyll make a small game and promise beta or release a grbage one and use the money they scam to fund a larger game that might be somewhat decent or just another scam
Drunken words are sober thoughts!
i must agree with jiveturkey
myst was made by a few guys....and was extremely successful
the problem being....95% of games and game developers arent like myst or mysts developers
Drunken words are sober thoughts!
Alright, it is more than likely that a group of for developers in their spare time can in fact make an excellent game if they are talented enough. Judging by the screens this group has put out for our viewing pleasure I think they could do an excellent job if they had more time. MMOs are hard to make and put out. So I think it best to just be patient and hope for the best. Some of the very best teams are small teams. Too many chefs spoil the stew.
Where's the cheerleading squad for this game? Why was it there for Darkfall? "Oh, Aventurine is a bunch of gamers! They're a small company, but they're gamers like us! They know what we want! I don't care if they're not a 400 dev company!"
This game seriously looks cool, both the features and the unique setting. I hope you guys can get some more hands and complete it.
Myst also wasn't an MMO, when you add server-side code into the mix it's a whole nother world.
Just because Myst was not an MMO does not mean an MMO cannot be completed by a small team. Myst was an amazing adventure game for it's time (and still is an amazing game considering all the new tech we have). Even with all the complicated coding involved with an MMO they could do it given enough time.
However it would, I agree, help them a great deal to have a few more hands. It would speed up the process of making the game (which would be nice for those of us who want to see it succeed).
Like all good ideas they fall by the wayside for the fast shootem up million all the same games. WWII Online managed to get past this point then do the only 3 people working on it trick for 8 years.
I would definitly try this game out if the imagination of the dev group is as good as advertised.. Being a free samarai walking the streets and joining an army of samarai would be extremely appealing.
Maybe the dev group should move out of the fantasy type role playing and into the combat type of spawning rights like WWII Online... with brigades of samarai spawning rights that could be used for combat... while others work at making swords and food for sale if they want....Daiymo players could move units of player spawning rights to capture sections of japan against opposing Daiymo area rulers to capture the Shogunate... while being supported by a fuedal peasantry of players making swords and selling stuff... to make more spawning rights and provide protection for their stores and gold accumulations and the peasantry could change allegiance when captured or drop everything and move and start over with as much as they could carry on a cart.
I can just imagine thousands of samurai players all with variable ranks and skills based on their characters spawning into a castle or into a siege camp placed by the Daiymo player trying to take the enemy castle or secure the enemy town. If you die you just spawn again based on allowable spawning rights that the Daiymo managed to get set or moved to the location of the battle. When you run out of spawning rights well that is the end of the battle with one side holding out or succeeding in taking the enemy territory. After all allot of the Japanese civil war was about taking the enemies lands and defeating him in battle. Between battles well it was never really between battles.
That definetly would be easier. There is a whole nother degree of complexity that exists when you are taking a game out of 2D isometric and making it a 3D customizable game. If I were to do 2D isometric, there are a bajillion things I don't have to worry about in developing the art.
The problem when you are being ambitious is that you have to take the time to fulfill those ambitions. Its harder then it looks.
The 3d world is the world where things happen and players interact. The territories and castles are batteled for by the samurai who get their weapons and supplies from the skilled peasants. The 2 to15 Daimyos own the castles and all samurai loyal to them wear his sashimono or Kasa jirushi. Each daimyo tries to win all of japan. It is this allegience and subsequent battle that makes the game interesting while players can make armor dor whatever and sell it as peasants.
If one Daimyo is at war the peasants can choose to fight for their side as Ashigaru if the Daimyo loses his home town he loses his shop and any home or possesions in the town (he could have stored some money in another town before the war /battle and saved it). If he does not fight then he just loses more profits to taxation by the Daimyo unless he changes allegiance.
So there is a layers economy with a layered struggle for total control of Japan with a layered warrior group that can have armor and create wealth through conquest. All Samurai in a battle that takes an enemy castle are given gold in tribute for their services and success. The Samurai also receive a pension from the Daimyo's taxes based on how much land he has and how much economy is being generated in his area of contro.
So the world is indeed a rich 3d world with a true to historical struggle for control of Japan that can be shown on a 2d map. Once all of Japan has been conquered the Daimyo becomes Shogun and the game is reset to start again. One player cannot be Shogun more than once or Daimyo more than some set period giving everybody a chance at seeing if they could be a great leader. Squads or Guilds would produce the best chances of success and should be encouraged.
This game , from what I been reading of it - maybe the game I been looking for, no magic ,no monsters, but straight Tokugawa Era fun and no fantasy BS . It will be great to finally play a real historical MMO that isnt dumb down with magic like many samurai themed games are, I hope this game makes it to launch and I'm defiitely keeping an eye on this one.
Evil will always triumph because good is dumb....
Lets keep the expectations low. Its not like we have a 500 person development staff like Blizzard on our side, or full-time employees.
It's been 2 years since the OP's post. What forward movement has there been on this game since then?
I'm not being combative btw, just genuinely curious.

I can't divulge too much information, but we have overcome the biggest hurdle. A working client and server engine that imports models simply and effeciently.
Any chance of some footage, or possible beta tests anytime within the next few years?
