I've played Eve for a short time and I have to say, I think the concept of skills defining your character (hence being somewhat unique rather than a cookie cutter character) is the way to go. Are there any other fairly PVP oriented games that anyone could recommend? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks to all in advance.

Ultima Online
That's true, and I've actually played and enjoyed Ultima Online in the past. But I'm looking for something a little... fresher. A little more eventful. Again, thank you for the suggestion!!
The only other one that I can think of is Darkfall, and I don't have any personal experience with it. Other than them... Future MMOs I guess. Fallen Earth looks promising, but who knows these days? I wish there were more, but unless you go to free to play games, I don't think there are too many, if any.
Anarchy online
There really isnt anything out that is similar to the way Eve works.
Like others have said you have UO and then Eve.
We used to have SWG but that got messed up.
There are games like Ryzom that have a skill system but its pvp isnt hardcore (mostly just guild v guild outpost capture/defense).
Darkfall recently released but to be honest it will need atleast a year for the game world to have a true identity (alliances forming and taking over the game world, player rules to be set).
We have Earthrise, Fallen earth and Mortal Online on the way that use a skill system also but just like Darkfall they will need time to develop their game worlds so they will be heavily criticized early on.
Stick with Eve for now or move to Darkfall and try to pick a good alliance.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
Amazing how people keep forgetting Asheron's Call. Lots of skills to choose from and can mix and match to form the type of character you like.
Free trial, no reason not to check it out.
AC is a great game, but it's old.
If the guy thinks UO is too old he wont want to mess with either AC or a good game like AO.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
Fallen Earth will be out later this year, probably Q3, and Earthrise also but I think FE will be better.
TBH EVE is really the only solid show in town. All the other games in this thread have their merits but they don't really even hold a candle to EVE unfortunately.
UO is the best alternative out there if you can get past the age of the graphics. (and they were recently updated but still feel 'old' to be honest.)
AC is a nice solid game too but it's NOT the same type of skill system. It does let you customize your character a great deal more than other MMO's though. Personally I didn't like AC much when I tried it back in the day but from what I hear they've adressed many of the issues I had with the game and it sounds like it'd be worth a shot. It's 'older' but the graphics are 3D poly like most newer MMORPG's but the poly count is typically lower. I believe there's a free trial so it might be worth your time to at least check it out.
I have yet to try Darkfall, waiting for it to have a free trial since the beta was practically non-existant and they never had an open beta. I refuse to buy games sight-unseen So while it's probably 'ok' based on it's feature list I'd never advise someone to pay for a game without trying a free trial first.

I notice someone mentioned that the beta with Darkfall was non-existent. I'm not trying to knock the game here - just making an observation. Couldn't one argue that it's really in beta right now? A new kind of beta with paid subscriptions, but a beta nonetheless. The volume and type of issues that they're working through and the way they severely constrain the population to avoid undue stress on the servers by rarely opening up the shop...what else can you really call it with any amount of credibility?
As to skills, I'd have to agree that the premier skill-based game out there right now is Eve. UO was great in its day, but probably not worth paying a full monthly subscription in 2009.
With regard to Fallen Earth, I'd recommend a wait and see approach. Can't personally say too much about it, as I don't know if the NDA has been lifted, but suffice it to say that my beta acct is gathering dust right now.
No offense but I'm not here to bash other games. And, frankly, if you want to discuss Darkfall's failings/strengths go do it on the Darkfall forums. This thread was a person asking about other games with similar skill systems. Not whether Darkfall is a paid beta or not. Regardless of the fact that I mostly agree with you.

that was true when it first came out.
each expansion/booster they released turned it more towards a level-locked cookie-cutter item based game
OP u can try darkfall is new game and there is also potbs or wait for mortal online also there are some no fantasy games like earthrise and fallen earth
BestSigEver :P
well im hoping that mortal online will be the game i switch eve betwen on and off .
Thanks to all, looks like nothing out at the moment to really compete with Eve. Will have to wait and see on Darkfall and Fallen earth.
Thanks again!!
I've been playing MMO's since back before the 3D days. In comparison to EVE's depth of play, the only other game that I feel comes "really" close is an old-school game called Anarchy-Online.
Sadly, it is now dated graphic wise, though there are plans to soon release a new DX engine for the game.
This game has the same "deep" skillset that EVE has. While I'll agree UO has a rather vast system, AO is a bit more than that even. Anyone who ever played the game for a long period of time would probably agree.
Side Note: No, this does NOT apply to the freebie version. This pertains the game as a whole, including all expansions.
The "Froob" version doesn't count.
Old-school UO, even though I've never played it, from what I've heard has a good skill system. It hasn't been actively supported by anyone for years though now.
As far as current games go, after tossing out all the "I got ganked QQ" BS, I've heard almost nothing but good things about Darkfall... thinking about trying it out myself if they ever open it up to the public.
How can you confuse EvE's skill system as being in-depth?
It is the most effortless skill system out there. Skills are automatically learned off line while you are sleeping and once learned they require no in-game utilization to max out or maintain.
You think simply naming a bunch of manual actions with a skill creates depth?
Depth and time required to do something are 2 completely different things you know/
Dude I would rather use Eves train over time system then horrid macro skill grind that Darkfall uses.
Are you really happy hitting a target dummy 10 million times with a sword to raise a skill?
I would rather play the way I want to play and not actually have to force myself to go out and say "bahh.... I need to raise my Lazer skill today".
Active skill systems are almost as lame as leveling in a class system in todays themeparks.
I have outgrown all this mentally retarded skill grinding, Eves system makes sense and it lets me enjoy the game and not have to go out and grind shit all day like a robot.
I could use Saga of Ryzom as an Example. In that game I need to grind out my 2h skill. Its not natural and takes a real long time. Hell a casual player starting out can be trapped in one zone grinding mobs all day for weeks....... sounds pretty shitty to me.
In Eve I can go where ever I want, I'm free. I'm not restricted by a flawed skill or leveling system.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
I would suggest Guild Wars actually. You have the option of creating a max level avatar for PVP. In EVE, you can only fill 1 role at a time primarily. Not a whole lot different from a Dual Class based system that offers hundreds of combinations
Only problem with GW overall it lacks the gameplay 'depth' that EVE has but for pure simple fun it delivers
Beyond that there is Darkfall. Just find a nice quiet place and macro yourself to max. That's really your main competitor to EVE
