ATI Radeon HD 4890 vs. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 vs. Age of Conan

AmazingAveryAmazingAvery Age of Conan AdvocateMember UncommonPosts: 7,188

New article up at AnandTech that shows off these 2 new cards from either company with Age of Conan. Both cards are right in the middle of a price war at the moment which is good news for us the consumer.

Take a read of the whole article though as one Video Card doesn't warrant the purchase of one game but overall in the games tested things are pretty close all the way through.

With respect to AoC and performance here are some charts from the article:

DX9 results only:

1680x1050 res:

1920x1200 res:

2560x1600 res (usually 30" monitors!)

Will be interesting to see results from AnandTech when DX10 fully gets released into the game.

Looking good I guess. Would be nice (for my ego) to hear someone saying that the 4890 is "teh best garphic card ever".

Just ordered one and hope that I'm not as dissapointed in that one as I was for the 3870 card. (Nothing to do with AoC.)

    http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3405

Looking at that review the 3870 card had 25-30 fps at a resolutin 1680x1050 for AoC.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

My biggest complaint, and the reason I don't use them, is ATI has horrible support for thier drivers.  Nvidia updates thier drivers constantly, ATI maybe two times a year.  Just my personal opinion, but I run Dual GTX285 and I've run the DX10 test on maximum settings (not just high, but max) and OT is the only zone that my fps drops below 40. In lighter zones I get around 45-70.  I reached just over 73 while standing still in Pyramid of the Ancients.

goto your Nvidia control panel and set your SLI to "Force alternate Frame Rendering 2" you should gain 20-30fps that way. Nvidia reccomended SLI setup is teh lame.

ATI have released new drivers once a month for the last 2 years and they are now updating the Windows 7 drivers aswell.

Regardless about that. What performance you get when running one of the GTX285.

if you have the 4870 then 70 bucks for a minor increase isnt worth it imho.the core 216 seems bad at AOC tho for some reason. Not sure if I trust these benchmarks.I get better fps with the core 216 on higher settings even. What driver was he using to test?

  • TechleoTechleo Member Posts: 1,984

Something just doesn't add up. I'm using a Oced 4870 on AoC with full settings and I get 60fps on average. Hrmm mite have to do with a bunch of other stuff I put into my PC though. All that ddr3 ram mite help. Not to mention a few other things.

I'm not shure if you answered me here.

I have the 3870 card. Maybe you made a typo with 4870 (or you read my post wrong) and ment that I should not expect more than a minor increase from 3870.

    I hope not.

I have a HD4870 and would never buy another ATI card. I constantly get ctd's in game and bsod's because of the ati drivers. I will upgade again in September/October and buy a Nvidia card.

    I have the AMD 4870 HD 1gig

I have had it for about a month, much better performance than my previous nvidia card.  My next card will most likely be another AMD card since it looks like they have caught up to Nvidia.

    Thanks.

I have 4GB and AMD 720 CPU and running games in windows mode. It looks promising.

I'll get back with what numbers I will receive with the 4890 (although I'm not completely shure I will open the box or return it when I get it).

I have ati 4870 6gigs of ram and a quad system no problems whats so ever playing decent games have not played Aoc for over 6 month because of there hype and non delivery of promises. Laying folks off and moving others to there new project Secert World. Im not sure if  it could be the game and something wrong with the system though but i would not rule it out either.

    Great! looking forward.

I would stick with the 4890 personally. To be honest it really counts for the price you can pick them up for (that or the 275). New ATI drivers just came out a few days ago too.

I also am testing either 1 or 2 GTX 285's in variation with an 8800GT used just for Physx at the moment too.

  • OrphesOrphes Member UncommonPosts: 3,039

I'm running the game in Window mode, resolution 1400x1050.

Resetting the setting with pressing default and then choosing high settings. Checking that the dx10 settings are turned on.

In general I got 25-30 fps on those high settings. In some occasions it was up to 40fps and in some it dropped to 20 fps.

Compared to the dissapointement when upgrading from the 1950 to 3870 card. I must say that this upgrade from 3870 to 4890 is so far very pleasant.

According to Tomshardware, the GTX295 is the best card available in the market:

thats old info.. but if you expect something special from nvidia ur damn wrong.. there been way more ppl complaning about nvidia than ati, so maybe you should do proper reinstall.. and dont mess up windows/drivers

Toms also reports that ATI have announced a 4890x2 too so we will have to wait and see.

From January and drivers and such have changed, but testing still showed the GTX 295 to not be the best card to AoC "overall" especially at higher resolutions.

That is not to say it is an awesome card as it is, used to own one but did a part exchange for some other PC goodies with local store.

Well at least my 280 isn't doing too badly :) I wouldn't really expect it to beat something that's 2x lol

I see those same results with DX10 now on three of those cards and similar settings.

I just bought a new 4850 HD 512 but haven't noticed big improvements over my old 8800 Gt card.

    thanks for the informative replies.

I've been pricing some parts lately as I am about to build a new rig and was wondering how ATI was holding up against Nvidia nowadays.

I don't know if I am sold on switching back to ATI, but I am giving it some thought.
