Funcom promised us a great deal of interesting and potentially great aspects of the game, yet they could not deliver. They failed to see who their market was, the majority of people who went for it when it first released were hardcore gamers and clans that were actively looking for something new and exciting, to release the game in its state, with various pvp flaws and no endgame, with hardcore gamers obviously going to rush the content to get to endgame, just to find there was no endgame? Sorry, but then your asking to get bad press.
Though I fell in love with some of their ideas, bear shamans for example, sure they were a little overpowered, but the whole concept was to make healers more interesting to play, to get involved in the combat and for BS in particular, to get right in amongst it. Its a shame they could not deliver.
i played so much over six months that i burned out. that's actually quite impressive given that my average MMORPG subscription length is about four months.
Horrible "innovative" combat system. For me it was the worst and the most annoying of them all.
I am guessing you like to just one click abilities?
I can exactly what I do not like about AoC combo system - I played a ranger and used crossbow and it took me up to 10-12 seconds to execute the combo, 10-12 seconds of standing still. It might have changed or may be I was doing something wrong, but it was the most annoying combat implementation I have ever encountered. Again, it might be my own fault, but it felt so non-dynamic and boring I quit after week of playing and around lvl 54. Another thing - you run and accidentally press shoot button and can not do anything about character stopping and shooting into yonder. With slow crossbow it was torture. Yes, my fault about pressing button, but any other game I tried did not give me this kind of "lost control" feeling.
What I do like is Vanguard combat system. I enjoyed this kind of combo chains alot, and casting on the run was just a blast .
Just my opinion and feelings... but combat system was a deal breaker for me.

The first think Craig did when he took over was shorten combo lengths.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
I bought the 6 month subscription when the game came out and quit as soon as my subscription ended. I recently tried the trial and even though they have fixed almost all the technical problems I was having, I'm sorry to say it's still the same boring game. There just isn't enough things to do to keep me interested.
There were many reasons why I quit Age of Conan but I think the main one was that there was no interesting endgame. I wasn't having any fun so why should I keep playing? One you reach the higher levels, game is basically over and you can either reroll a new character or quit, so I quit. Why did YOU quit Age of Conan?
I just couldn't take people asking me inane questions anymore...like "Why did you"........oh wait...never mind.
It's better to lurk in forums and be thought a fool...than to endlessly "Quote" and remove all doubts.
Seems like lack of endgame is the biggest reason with 18% of votes. No surprise there.
How the hell did Funcom fail to understand the importance of endgame? Did they just assume that if they polished Tortage, everyone would forget about the rest of the game? Dumb move imo.
Because Vanguard blows it out of the water graphicwise as well as gameplaywise. And that is a fact I would not have believed before I saw the truth with my own eyes. Vanguard is now my new obsession and if SOE ever cancels it I will be done with MMO's forever! Another fact that I would not have believed had I not downloaded the trial last month. VG Rocks! Nuff Said!
First it's the PVP.It's was pointless ganking and rez camping. There was absolotly no reason to PVP.No Faction , no pvp gear point or whatnot. It's was like playing a fps game.Load a *map* and you have 90 rogue popping after 3 ft .
The Bug . The most annoying was gray map .. The Memory Leak ... The shader Model 3 bug ...The quest bug ... etc ... SOme very annoying animation bug.
..Gear..When we level we want to see a difference. At level 50 i was looking exactly like a level 20.
Instance.ZOne ,load,ZOne,Load .. etc.
I'm back in aoc and i'm still not sure if i like it.
The main reason was that I was going back to university for the first semester in years and didn't think I could manage that and still play.
What made that decision tons easier was was "boring crafting". Now, I don't particularly like the wording of that poll choice as I wasn't "bored" with crafting. It's the lack of a crafting system with a level of depth to my personal standards is what made it really easy to just cancel instead of maintaining the account and playing in small spurts when I could (weekends, holidays, etc.) *shrug*
I need more to keep my attention (and subscription money) than "combat, combat, combat".
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Too much PvE, too much instancing and too fast leveling. Also incoherent "world" that didn't feel like a world. Just a string of zones bundled together.
What finally killed it for me is when they introduced level ranges for PvP, i.e. that you get penalties if you attack anyone X levels below you. And this on the PvP servers, bleh.
The lack of an endgame. you got to 80 and then what? The PvP servers were just gank fests, so no point in going there. The RP servers were just as bad, and the PvE servers lacked so much content beyond tortage, getting to 80 was just a meaningless grind.
The crafting. I hated that you needed to join a guild to be able to craft the higher level stuff. I mean, WTF is with that anyway? the guilds dont actually need tons of crafters, theyve got plenty of them as it is. The crafting really wasnt geared towards the non guilded player. Second was the epic nerfing of the gem cutting. The gemed armor and weapons were overpowered at first, then Funcom took the lazy route and just nerfed into uselessness. Being able to craft decent gear for yourself is one of the keys to survival for solo players because they cant always get into the instances to get the higher level gear off of the mob drops. And even then, if you do manage to get in, you have to roll against the other members of the group, so you dont always get it in the first, second, or even third runs of an instance.
The population. It was so freaking small. I mean, at first, yeah, there were tons of people. But once the mem leaks and other issues started to really take hold, people left in droves. Those who did stay got up to 80 then quit. Around the time I quit, my friends list went from packed down to 3-5 people.
The small instances. It sucked having only those little PFs to explore. They could have made them larger, maybe threw in some cool hidden easter egg areas for people to find.
Lack of Player housing. If they had this, I might have stayed. The storage in the bank boxes was so limited, it was insane. People were resorting to mailing themselves their own stuff just so they could store extra gear and resources. At least if people had houses, they could store items and resources there as well as their banks.
I have no complains about the combat, that was actually good. I did enjoy playing my Conq and Guard. But there wasnt enough to do with them. Wander around the same areas and just camp the same spawns over and over? No thanks.
All in all, Funcom promised a lot and delivered very little. I remember in the videos for the game they showed a group of people pushing a long boat ashore. Certianly couldnt do that. AOC is just another let down MMO.
But I guess thats just the way things are with MMOs today. Promise big, deliver nothing.
Unfortunately for Funcom the people who financed the project forced them into an early release because NO ONE in beta said the game was ready for live. As a matter of fact 99 percent of them said if you release now the game will not make it. The lesson to be learned in all of this is if you don’t release a polished MMO people will not stay. This game was barely fit to go into beta let alone be released with well over 50 percent of the game broken or missing. It’s sad they let this game fail as it was being looked at as the next huge MMO. Funcom lied so much to try and hang on to subscriptions and in turn made it to where I will never buy another Funcom product as long as I am a gamer.
I'm still in it, but mainly because nothing else out there yet, I'll be going to champions once it comes out.
My issue: Only thing to do is raid, as I don't like the pvp aspect of this game one bit. I raid 3-4 nights a week for about 3hrs, and love every second of it. I love the combat system in this game, is superb compared to other games, but it boils down to this simple fact, unless I'm raiding, I'm not playing. I logged 15hrs each of the past two weeks my lowest since I got the game in december.
Now, there is an off chance 1.05 will change that, but I'm not to hopeful. It depends on if we have to relearn of of Wing1,2, and what we are at on wing 3.
How about the: they nerfed my class option?
I played as a female barbarian and they attacked slower than the male barbarians and then Failcom nerfed barbarians as a whole.
I think that I quit the game in July but I can't really remember.

The attack speed was a interesting issue that's for sure. That part is fixed now, and while melee overall is a bit weak compared to casters barbs these days are a quite decent class. need some more work and tweaks, but that will be the situation with all classes always in MMO's.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

I saw with my own eyes some spell caster class doing a escort quest before me just oblitterating the mobs in a few seconds while I was having a very hard time with the same quest and I almost died too.

I quit about two months after launch because the game was clearly incomplete and broken.
Then I returned some month ago and quit before the sub ran out because I was bored. It is a really boring game.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
Necro nerfs patch after patch.
maxed 3 characters and got bored of the same pointless and instanced zerg wars.

You needed an 'All of the above' selection
But the worst thing for me was the instancing....
personal instances
group instances
city instances
building instances within city instances
guild city instances
Blah. They should have just made AoC a single player game... oh yeah the first 20 level were originally designed to be single player....
