Crafting systems

Hope you guys and gals can help. I am trying to find an mmo with a good crafting system in it. Play SWG and like the system there, but would like to see what other options are around. Thanks in advance.

There aren't that many games with good crafting systems, as most often, a game's crafting system is just something stupid to grind levels in.  If you want a game with a lot more to it than that, try A Tale in the Desert.

If you like the merchant and market aspect of crafting, try EVE.

If you like crafting systems with dynamic loot, Try UO.

Also, as mentioned above, ATITD is an excellent game for people interested in the building and community aspects of crafting.

Each of those three offer the relatively rare feature of being a dedicated crafter in an MMO - no need to go around killing  endless rats/bears/spiders just to be able to bake a higher grade loaf of bread.

Shoot me for saying this but WoW has a decent crafting system. ATITD has an extraordinarily diverse system but getting some of the materials for the more complex tools will prove to be unbearably tedious. Last Chaos has one but it is based on one-use "recipe books". Just scout the free ones and see what you like. Or if your willing to pay, get some trials. It's all about your opinion ^.^

Consider yourself shot, then.  WoW is the poster child for a "something stupid to grind levels in" crafting system.  The crafting process literally consists of, click a button to start, wait a bit, and then you're done.  Well, you're not actually done, because you have to do that a few hundred more times crafting random junk that no one wants in order to get high enough level to actually craft anything you might want.

If you are just wanting to play another game whiles waiting for SWTOR, and want a game that is easy going fun to play and challenging in its own ways. Definately Play WoW until SWTOR comes out.  I havent played Vanguard but I heard its whole system as far as crafting and everything was done really well, but  I heard from an another source so don't hold me to it

    BANG!

WoW is a perfect example of completely secondary and relatively trivial crafting in MMOs.

Want to sew a better dress?  No sir, you haven't killed enough rats to be able to sew better.

Want to pick a higher level herb? No sir, you can't do that until your bear death quota is filled. Only then will you understand the complexities of unrooting the more exotic weeds.

I mean, you can certainly try to work against the system and skin your way to the top without fighting mobs, but getting one-hit on a regular basis might end up sucking after a while.

You could take a look at Ryzom (Saga of Ryzom). It is sandboxy and has a lot of freedom in it. It is skillbased, you can fight, cast magic, harvest and craft. If you make a pair of leather boots, the materials will have influence on the quality of the boots and what stats they can have.

I don't find it unlike SWG, although it is not the same. But compared to SWG, most crafting systems pale in comparison imo. But I do find depth in the crafting in Ryzom.

Free trial and all, so you can try it before you decide to buy :)

The only reason why some people rate Vanguard's crafting system highly is that they haven't played a game with a good crafting system, so one that isn't very good but is better than most is the best recommendation they can come up with.

Thank you all, you have given me some good alternatives which I will have a look at, nd been very helpful. I have played WOW and know the system in it, not really my taste, but do like the game in general. Will definately give the others a look though. Thanks again.

The sad, sad truth. The crafting system is one of the things that kept me playing for a month after the NGE. I was a shipwrite so I avoided the dynamic stats nerf. SWG pre-CU was the only game I know of that you did not have to kill a single thing to make it to end game. If you were a armorsmith you would be taken to help craft bounty hunter armor (best/most rare armor in the game).

I only hope SW:TOR can make it's crafting system 1/2 as good as SWG.

Ryzom online is probably the closest crafting to swg, give it a whirl, everything is crafted which helps the economy in more ways then one. Other then that everquest 2 has a fun crafting system while it is not as deep but it is very time consuming.

Time consuming but not deep sounds very, very grindy.

The greatest aspect of SWG crafting is the total integration of the economy. As a rifeman in one of my alts (one alt per realm), I have to go shop for guns, from vendors to vendors. The shopping for guns, the chatting, the personal link to crafters, its a very dynamic and effective social core. In order to obtain bandages, I go kill for the crafters when the meat is right for the week, and drop them into the crafter's collection machine. Merchants, crafters, harvesters, and customers form a tight union in which everyone depend on everyone and help everyone. That makes each part of the link meaning and fun. Oh yeah, and the fact that each gun is different, and each batch of guns from each vendor is different, makes for very meaningful crafting. The day a good gun is available is a major news to customers, no longer do we have the same gear, for each tier, like WoW.

One good thing about WoW crafting is the variety, tho the usefulness and over integration is far from SWG.

If you are talking about ryzom or any mmorpg they are all grindy so I do not get what you mean and if you mean grindy in a not fun way it is not that either, eq2 is deep but not as deep as ryzom where you can craft anything all loot is to craft I believe, niether feels grindy at all, wows crafting system is probably one of the grindiest but it is easier eq2 and ryzom are much deeper and more challenging and fun, it all depends on how you look at it, if you do not want a grind then most mmorpgs are not for you.

Yeah, WoW's crafting is essentially cosmetic; lacking in depth and useless for the most part.

I get my crafting fix from EVE, it's economic structure and craft systems are the best that I've ever seen in an MMOG.

They should just replace the entire WoW crafting system with vending machines. Pop in 1-2k gp and epics pop out.

I really enjoy the Lord of the Rings Online crafting system, but I know some people do not care for it.

    These are my reasons:

    1. By the end game you can craft some pretty awesome gear

    2. While leveling it is easier to craft gear for your level

    3. "crits" are a unique way to keep crafting fresh.

    4. There are an absolute ton of things you can craft.

    5. More nodes. It seems like there are way more mining nodes than other games.

    6. The cooked food you make is some of the best in any MMO. And there are so many things you can cook.

    7. You can use crafting "items" which help your crit chance. Made by a Metalsmith.

    8. Skinning is not a skill, nor should it be. The game assumes your character is an able adventurer so everyone can get hides. Tanning them however, is a different story.

    9. Not really crafting related but I just love the social clothing. My Explorer has a backpack with a pickaxe attached to it so you can totally tell he is a miner.

    10. I love the crafting interface and the tiers make sense..

Saga of Ryzom Has probably the best Crafting and gathering system on the Market today.

Hell some say the whole game is digging and crafting.

Id still have to say Vanguard, just for the fact that you are interacting as you craft, you have to press certain things during the time etc etc.

I prefer being in my crafting, then watching that little bar go from [ ] to [                                                                                                    ] ...

Bleh, they should make a harvest moon MMORPG .. that would be some intense farming/crafting ... XD

Wurm Online is pretty much all crafting, outside some hunting and fighting.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
