I quit UO after less than 20 hours played because the lag was horrible and because it was so very hard to find something to fight (at the right level).  This was around when it was released.  It had a very bad release.

EQ1's Rallos Zek server was traumatic for me: as the first of its kind (basically), the game was so right in so many ways.  But it was so ridiculously prejudiced against warriors in pvp that I couldn't play it for more than 6 weeks.  Lots of friends later tried to suck me back in but they all failed.

I never looked back at either of those games, even when they were the only graphical muds out there.

I played/tried other games, including Vanguard, Conan, Shadowbane and Anarchy Online and each was bad on many levels when I was playing them.  But I really wasn't expecting too much from them either so I wouldn't call them 'worst'.  Just like I wouldn't call any f2p "worst".

The biggest disappointment/disaster for me was AC2.  That game was basically the prototype for a crappy MMO.

Wow I can't seem to think of one mmo that really I'd label worst.

I can tho pick out things from each I played awhile that were less than adored.

Runescape kids asking for a gf or bf from complete strangers.

The rude community of wow or their goofy shoulderpads.

The lack of population in Ryzom and that some ppl were so sugary sweet the chat became sickening, hun sweetie gets old.

The undocumented changes in Lotro. Every patch its a freak out to see what is different that they DIDN'T mention.

I have not played many MMOs, and only one free one, of which I cannot even remember the name. The two MMOs that I played and enjoyed the least, from my limited list, would have to be Shadowbane, followed closely buy GuildWars.

Let's see... if we're talking about P2P games... I'd say... yes! Lineage 2. Incidentally it was one of the first ones I tried. Talking about a first impression of the genre! I will not touch anything that remotely resembles that sugar-coated grindfest vomit with boring... everything really.

How did you find that game and whats "animu"?

My worst is a web browser MMO that I have forgotten the name of.

The graphics looked like something from over twelve years ago and after a few minutes of playing it I uninstalled it.

Oh yeah, and Runescape of course.

I cant' believe how anyone would be willing to play that game.

I mean, it looks like a game for the VIC 20 home computer from the early 80's with only eight colors on screen at one time.

So yeah, I vote Runescape for being the crappiest MMO ever made in the history of man.

Runescape would have been a good MMO 25 years ago but sadly the internet hadn't been invented then and I don't count the experiments between universities in the 70's and 80's as the internet.

Animu is a mock term for anime that SA made. And I found the game from SA. Download Gekkeiju if you want to have some quick lulz.

Note I do like a few anime shows, lol.

    Currently playing: EverQuest II

Tried: EVE Online (will return someday), Final Fantasy XI (didn't like, sorry)

I don't know who it was that said EVE...I love EVE with every fiber of my body.  It's only pitfall for me is that I lost my account info and the email that it came with, and I refuse to start over when I had so many skills that took months to train.

    As for worst MMO...

Its a hard choice.  WoW is at the top of my list.  I beta'd the game.  I played the game for about a month after release.  All of my friends play it, and coming from a background of EQ, DAoC, and Ultima Online, it was the most boring experience I've ever had.

Definitely not the worst MMO, but one that I loathe is Lineage 2. There's so much damn good content at the end of the game, but it’s buried in the most insanely boring grind I have ever experienced or know of.

Thank goodness NCSoft realized the market for this type of game is quickly diminishing.

From the standpoint of game design, I felt my worst experience was NGE version of Star Wars Galaxies.

From the standpoint of playability, my worst experience was Age of Conan, because my client crashed between zones...and even when going through doors.

The worst MMORPG I ever played was Conquer. 2D graphics and a grindfest beyond belief.

Atlantica or Sword of the new world, they really didn't work for me at all.

As a P2P game it is COX, the city looked so similar everywhere and the quests were generally copys and pasted from EQ and Wow. Decent char creator but generally bad looking graphics.

Of course is all these personal opinions and other people love the game but for me the experiences were just bad.

    Faces of Mankind.

I tried I guess you could call it the Open Beta, back in 04/05, I can't remember.

    It was fairly early on in the game and while it ran decent, looked decent, the premise was decent, it's beta..was well, hell I dunno. I'm not sure if they ever changed it, but the fact it was this way in the first place turned me off;

You started the game with no weapons. None. You had a few credits/in-game money to spend but not enough to buy the most basic starter gun. You could do quests to gain money but they required you to fedex around alot, leaving you wide open to PKers, completely defenseless, not a game breaker but still it lead to three HUGE problems..

#1 You start the game in your characters apartment/housing. You can leave and enter the town it's in. The problem being, when you leave you end up at a central spawn point of that apartment area, which was easily distinguisable by a big light hovering over it, so PKers would stand right there and kill lvl 1 toons with no armor, no weapons of any kind, instantly.

this lead right into problem 2

#2 You had limited lives, kind of like Eve, where you need insurance or more "clones" right? You started with I believe it was 3 clones, and more had to be purchased with credits/in-game money. Problem? They cost a lot, a lot more than even the basic starter gun you couldn't even afford to buy. So you'd log in a new toon, leave your apartment, die to the PKers camping the noob spawn point, use up a clone and repeat. After 3 clones dead, your character was completely dead, forever. This lead into the brain fart of a problem 3..

#3 One toon, per account. If you ran out of toons or clones, your account was useless. I think they changed it while still in beta to be no new toons for 24 hours BUT even so.. if you get ganked in the noob area, completely defenseless and dirt poor unable to provide yourself with a way to keep playing, that's no means to punish someone who may be a potentially paying customer, forever or even 24 hours.

Now I dunno if they ever fixed these, but considering how you couldn't even play past lvl 1 without someone PKing you at the noob spawn point and the character creation limitation per account...I uninstalled. Even for beta thats not kosher.

Interesting thread - brings back lots of bad memories.

    Faces of Mankind - pfft

    Horizons - yawn

    Shadowbane - Ugh...

But the worst I've ever played was "The Matrix Online".  I'm sure I didn't give the game a fair try - but I so quickly lost interest I didn't care.

The most boring MMORPG I ever played, believe it or not, is Lord of the Rings Online.

The world felt so limited, the gameplay was predictable, and the title exploits an otherwise brilliant novel.

It was a real shame to see the commercialization of LotR executed so cheaply in an MMORPG.  The beauty of LotR is its lore and its world:  diversity, size, various languages, etc.

SA stands for Something Awful, a internet communty, they do sometimes review MMORPGs, a few have been slaughtered by the hands of the reviewers (Blade Mistress for one).

Star Wars Galaxies Post-CU(Combat Upgrade), and then again at Post-NGE(New Game Enhancement). I loved SWG when it first came out when unlocking Jedi was a badge of honor, sorta like reaching the end game content with out a single death on your main. Pre-CU the method to get a Jedi character was a grueling quest you had to unlike 5 skill trees and a random 6th. Then the CU came out and turned it into a quest that the Dev's allowed to be a sticky on the official forums. Then the NGE came out and everyone who wanted one could make one without any hassel. Now that BioWare is comming out with a Star Wars MMO you have to think why LucasArts is allowing the screw up SOE made still be on the market if I worked at LucasArts Id would not of turned total control over a Star Wars game to a company who has ruined it sence day 1, I would of yanked the license and allowed BioWares Star Wars the Old Republic to be the only Star Wars MMO out.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
