There is nothing else out there right now that is good
The amazingly hilarious tells that you get after killing someone in a fair 1on1 fight....and killing them again when they say "i bet you couldnt do that again" very satisfying.
Playing : DayZ
Played : EVE, GW, SB, DF, AoC, WoW, WaR, L1, L2, Rift, AA, WS
I play Aoc for the following reasons: 1) The realism of the game, there are no over the top armor pieces here, everything looks realistic. 2) The graphics in this game are to die for, and they run sooo smooth. 3) The animation in this game is top notch, i don't get at all tired watching my melee chars fighting, again with realistic sword play. 4) Combat melee system, you dictate each swing of your sword, you can maximise damage by paying attention to the shields of the mob you fight, and hit in the weakest spots. This make every fight different, after this auto attack feels soo dull. 5) Class types, although some class have been done before in other titles, there are some unique ones here, Barb, Hox and Conq are a few really cool melee fighters and the Necro here is pretty well done too(as you can summon up to 8 minions, We are legion!!)
These are the things that make the game stand out for me, questing etc is the same with other titles. Why do you play AoC?
It's funny, all of those except for 4 were the main things I liked about the game too. Personally, I hated the combat system, and while I thought it was a good idea, I thought it was a terrible implementation. Beyond that, I didn't find the things I liked, namely the stuff listed above, to overcome the things I didn't like, and thus stopped playing.
Just curious Abrahmm, what would you do to make it better?
Combat system was much better before they changed it. Ask anyone in beta. Just another example of how Funcom didn't listen to customers because they wanted the game to be more 'kiddie friendly'.
You're not a customer in Beta.
{Mod Edit} Beta is over so good luck in finding a customer in beta.
I was talking about the situation that happened way back in the day when we had that one launch delay. Funcom said it was because they had to revamp the combat system and that's what they did. Too bad they actually made it worse and anyone who was in beta at the time can confirm this.
They basically made combo system easier because they thought majority of gamers are dumb and need help in doing these combos. The result is this no-skill-needed button smashing we have today.
I was in beta, one of the first player, let me think, I though I was the 4 who wrote something on the beta forums.
What exactly to you mean be changing the combat system? There was the rose, yes, but what else? Didn t they change it later but not on the release? (Played 95% Necromancer on beta)

I'm pretty sure we are not allowed to talk about beta, right?
If you didn't play melee then you might not know what I'm talking about. But I'm surprised you didn't read about it on the forums because a lot of people were bitching about it. I never read one post on beta forums where someone said the new system was better. Not one single post.

Beta is over for a long time ago, and NDA was lifted so can't see any reason it should be forbidden.
How was the melee combat system compared to what we have today? As in what was the differences and such
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

I thought beta NDA is still active (like with AO), and unless I get a confirmation from a valid source I'm not talking. I don't want to get banned for that.
If you are interested I suggest you use google. I'm sure someone has talked about it.
There are not birds dropping 2 hand axes everywhere.
Rofl, yea or 2 handed swords that are 3 times your body length. It is an aspect I really appreciate.
I agree, most of the weapons are actually made by people who at least seen a real sword. The armors are not as good however. Some of them is ok since the Conan lore do describe them but others are just weird or have been invented by some comic guy at Marvel.
We should actually force all MMO devs to do 1 day real combat training in different armors and with different weapons.
I'd love to see Kaplan in a Wow armor BTW One of the more outragous ones of course. Or the japanese FF devs with a Manga sword wide as a shovel.

Quite true. I'll also add that although there is a lot of brown in the armor's I do find them diverse enough and simply put I had a worst time at low levels in lotro for the colour brown. Some later level general armor in AoC is very stylish imo.
Why I play AoC at this moment? It runs good on both my and my gf system (wich wasnt the case around launch). We enjoy it and have a lot of fun.
When I stop having fun, I cancel and move on. Simple as that. Cheers
I agree. Just a question though, how much difference in performance do you see? is it a big difference or enough to get by on?
Well the funny thing was, that I started in Early Access last year may and the game ran pretty good. I was impressed with the overal performance and had a lot of fun.
I created a guild, we grew to a size of around 50 people (around 20 or so active each night during EU peak times) and even started on our City within a couple weeks.
But then (think it was around patch 3 or 4 or so end of may) when shit hit the fan! And got worse with each patch after that.
- My FPS dropped like a rock. I had to turn down my graphic settings a lot and still my FPS was crap.
- I crashed at least once an hour due to newly introduced memory leaks with the patches.
- I disconnected a couple times per hour (during peak times).
Everyone within my guild started experiencing pretty much the same since these patches.
And by the end of June when I canceled out of frustration and anger, there wasn't much left of my guild as most of them had quit even sooner within the first month.
------------------
Now I resubbed last month together with my gf and two friends and we have actually a lot of fun now.
Both me and my gf can run the game in DirectX9 at max settings and keep our FPS above 30 easily.
No more disconnects. No more crashes. So that alone is a huge improvement compaired to June last year.
There are still some small, but annoying bugs tho. Like the 'combat state' bug. But overal the game just runs smooth, wich really adds to the enjoyment.

C'mon haters! You can go flame in all the other 99% of threads that are already swamped with your posts. This thread is called 'Why I PLAY AoC'...
"nerf rock, paper is working as intended."
- Scissors.
Head Chop
I will never post in this thread with this title. Nor any other Funcom title labeled Why I play there game. Hows that Barteaux
MAGA
I'm confused. Read this post: www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2793422#2793422
That is you posting on a thread called "Why I gave up on AoC!"..
Seems like the rules don't apply to you.
I play because I enjoy the low fantasy setting, combat system, and graphics. There are not birds dropping 2 hand axes everywhere.

2. BS - they have to get some kind of medal or something for making this class
I need more vespene gas.
