As a hardcore FFXI player back in the day... I can tell you all you had to do was make macros for your skills and the problem would be solved as far as the controls for combat.
And with the release of WotG exp pack, you can now have 20 books of 20 sets of macros. So now you don't have to keep changing them to mat ch your job and/or subjob. Just switch to the book/set you currently need.
I had the advantage of FFXI being my very first MMO, so the game didn't seem any more difficult to me because i simply didn't know any better. i have played almost every MMO that has come out since FFXI, and i have just recently returned (on my son's 360, lol) because i am simply bored to tears of all the other cookie cutter MMO's out there. as old as it is, FFXI is a refreshing change after these 4 years of playing other games. my only complaint is that there is no world PvP (or is there? it's been a while...)
I have but one gripe about this game so far since returning a few weeks ago.
Why is Cursega level 29 and not 19? I was helping a friend kill Bogys in bub for his bloody robe, which was hard enough as is because they seem to be camped heavy by high levels, I assume for cloth. Our team was strong. My War/Monk, White/Red, two box team and his Red mage. We are creeping into mid 20s so there is no danger. Of course while we wait we decide to also hit up the page 5 task. Some pugs and gobbos. No worries.
Now everything is great. We grab Bogys when we can find them, not really my complaint. My problem is curse. Getting hit with this is instant downtime, with no way to remove it. We were completely crippled. I'm not sure what would have taken longer, waiting it out or limping back to town to change to a level 1 job and suicide to remove the damn thing. Tough con NPCs instantly became as hard as +5 level ITs, and the snare effect. God the snare. It is a miserable debuff that I would expect to be reserved for higher level mobs.
I did know all about curse from old days of playing, but really, this time around it became more of a drag than it was back then. Im sure because we had a way to interrupt. Even if we had that ability last night, I recall a spot where this one Bogy cast it 3 times pretty much in rapid fire succession. We aren't all about begging high levels either. We are all about doing it on our own. I was just disappointed that one single thing could put us out of commisoin in such a way where DC conning mobs were a danger.
Now I realize there are two subjob quests, but he had already accepted the Bub one so you're pretty much stuck. So a word to the unwary, Bogys still suck.
But I can say without any hesitation that this game offers one of the best mmo experiences iyou will ever have if you treat it with the patience it requires. This is the reason my friends and I love it so much, and are able to look back at all we did together and feel like they were real acomplishments as opposed to a time waster. And I am sure I will think the same when we do finally get that bloody robe from those Bogys and speak about how the tough con Pugil outright destroyed all three of us while we were cursed and laugh later down the road.
Seriously, you new generation MMO player are just spoiled.
Ui customization? what the heck is that. Try play older MMORPG, everything is stuck. So is FFXI.
Now i found playing on xbox 360 ffxi was hellish... the control are hard to use and the screen is hard to see.
PC version make it so much easier. First thing first, FFXI can be customize! It even said so in the manual with that BIG colour picture that show you all the keyboard layout. Of course, trial doesn't get that.
Once you play through 1 character to 50, its enough for you to do it 18 more times easily. Its faster everytime. So it began HARD, yes it is. But once you got it, it so easy you just walk through it.
I played a bard to 75 on US release then quit before COP. RESTART from scatch 2 years ago, and leveled a CORSAIR (when they aren't even that popular when TOAU release) within 2 month, from scatches on a new server.
That class require redicious amount of cash to play, and i just fly by it because i know my stuff already.
If you can't even get to 50 once, you haven't even touch 1% of the game.
