computer problems

KefoKefo Member EpicPosts: 4,229
ok I have had this problem for a few days now and its ticking me off.  Basically when I double click my computer and internet explorer it takes about 1-3 minutes for the window to pop up.  If I look in task manager if shows the iexplorer.exe in there but nothing.  I ran a norton defrag and scandisk and it didnt help the problem. I did a repair install of winxp but that didnt help either.  I also ran virus scans using norton and housecall and cleaned the trojans it found.  I'm running a p4 1.7Ghz, 1 gb of ram, ati radeon 9200. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

i wish i could help, but you have done everything i would have. maybe, try downloading spybot search and destroy, and/or hijack this, and use them to get rid of any other lingering viruses, spybots, or plugins. i know that one scanner never gets them all. other than that you may want to look at the ms database or give them a call, unless someone else has the answer to your question.

    AdAware
    Spybot S&D
Also make sure your anti-virus software is up to date.

If that doesn't work I'm not sure...

Duh forgot to mention that. I have ad-aware SE installed and run it at least once a week, doing the full system and ads scan. I also just got spybot S&D and ran that as well. That did not clear up my problem so I went to tech24.com even the guy I got on there is stumped :P he told me to do a system file check and it didnt say anything afterwards so I assume nothing is wrong. The only thing he could think of is to reformat but I think that as a last ditch effort.

*edit* forgot to mention norton is up to date on definitions. If any logs or something would help I will happily post em.

Also readed a few times you uses Norton. And if I read your problem probably Norton Internet Security. I had to reformat my pc 3 times before it ran smoothly after the installation of Norton Internet Security. Don't misunderstand me, it is a good program but can slow down your pc even it run smoothly before it updated the definitions. Perhaps your problem is that and with just de

I've had similar problems. Check to see if you have any unwanted extentions in IE. If so, get rid of them. (Tools>Internet Options>Settings>view objects)

Another time it was my router. Seems my router was overheating and dropping my IP. When I tried to go online IE would "detect network settings" for about 2 minutes before displaying my homepage.

Fail that, I would agree that it is Norton IS. I had the program but got rid of it because it was slowing me down too much. I now run a slimmer Firewall on my PC, and have an old pc that i converted into a dedicated firewall. Now i don't have to bother with Norton slowdowns.

    Hope you figure it out.

I dont have norton internet security so that cant be it and I've been using the same router now for a while so it cant be dropping my IP, also it takes forever to open my computer so there is something wrong somewhere but I cant figure it out. Thanks for all the suggestions tho. I may have to reformat but cant yet cause all my disks are at home 4 hours away image

Try Firefox & Netscape browsers to confirm if the problem is with all browsers vs just an IE problem. You did not say which version of IE you were having problems with nor if your hd is/are nearly full.
