I'm guessing Darkfall sank...

DuClaireDuClaire Member Posts: 82

Or has it? i've been out of the loop in a rutt with games the last few weeks. I went back to UO for a little while and it's made me despise all the levelling grinder games out there (95% of the market). I still enjoy Age of Conan, but i'm wondering.. is Darkfall any good? And please.. don't just say "yes, it rocks" or "no, it sucks". I'd love a UO-style experience, but more recent. I've also looked at Mortal online, quite franjly i'm torn between the two.

Its currently in what many people are calling "paid" beta.

Fail?  Some would say yes, some would say no.

The game itself is feature incomplete, however those who like what its offering will find it satisfying.

It offers a free loot open pvp envrioment with a large scale world to explorer and conquer.

Most people who play it play it for the political social interaction from what I'm gathering.

what he said.  also, if you want to play it, good luck, they are only selling a few copies at a time.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Similar to AoC...Darkfall was released about 6 months too early (perhaps more)

The game is playable, and aventurine is working to eliminate bugs and patch new content. It will take some time.

Darkfall is still alive and kicking.  It's a niche game with some die hard fans.  It's still in "limited" release so rather difficult to get.  But if FFA PVP with full loot is your thing, there isn't many games out there for you.

Yeah, too much talk from Aventurine and not enough game.  1 server, 8k-9k players and declining interest makes for an unstable business and will most likely close it doors within a few months.

To many, it's their first co-op game with roaming tactics they have ever played, so their all jacked up to play it.

But once these rookies realize they are paying $15/month and other games offer they same thing, but with superior gameplay. They will realize DFO for what it was and move one to real FPS games. They'll understand that Aventurine's formula of  50% of a bad MMORPG + 50% of a bad FPS game, doesn't equal 100% of a good game.

They are many that will argue otherwise, but if you look at their post history, you will see they really aren't being objective with any negative comments. And in the truest sense, fanbois! Typical shills you find on any forum within any game.

Yeah I don'tknow if it's just me but I'm not down to do the paid beta thing and it's not hard to see this stuff coming from a mile away.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

There's already a thread going asking the same question.

    But to summerize.

It's a crappy fps game and a shallow mmo.

    It's nothing like UO.

There are no levels, but it's still a massive grind.

All I am saying is, I have played for a month and I like it.

As I have been labled a fanboi by some on these forums, take what I say with a grain of salt, I suppose.

    I have played since launch.

What you can do, in Darkfall:

    1. Melee combat

    2. Ranged combat (Archery)

    3. Magic (various types)

    4. Mounted Combat

You can play any combination of these styles you wish.

There are no specific character levels, instead each skill levels independently, depending on use.

You can play as a gatherer and/or as a crafter, some of the skills are:

    1. Armor crafting

    3. Weapon crafting

    4. Enchanting

    5. Tailoring

    6. Herbalism

    7. Alchemy

    8. Jewel crafting

    9. Taming

Indeed, you can play as a trader, if you like.

You can play solo, in small groups, or as part of a large clan and alliance.

The world is uninstanced and pretty nicely done, so there are some nice exploration aspects to the game.

When working with clans, you can be part of all the politics that goes with that, as well as things like:

    1. City building

    2. Siege and defense

    3. Ships and naval warfare

There are dungeons and various types of monsters for PVE, as well as a growing number of quest chains, for this style of game play.

Darkfall has no safe zones, other than the relatively safe racial cities, so any player can attack you at will, pretty much everywhere and anywhere.

Of course it is a full loot game, so when you die you lose whatever it is you are carrying and wearing.

It can be stressful, for a video game, but that is part of the reason I like it.

The closest game I can compare it to currently is EVE, but more brutal, set in a fantasy setting, FPS combat style, no real equivalent to Empire space and a significantly nerfed version of CONCORD in those limited areas where there is some protection (racial cities). This is not saying that Darkfall is anywhere near as matured as EVE has become given that EVE is a 5+ year old game.

    Anyway, that's what I think.

well it's still sold out, 2 months after release, albeit they released with only 1 server.

number of subs appears to be in the 20-40K range, all playing on that 1 server.

i've been playing it since launch, and i think it's great, the best PVP MMO around atm by a long way, with lots of small group, clan-v-clan and big sieges going on every night.

I heard Tasos was looking for his compulsion.

    I think I found it.

There's a dif. between sold out and not available for sale.

Sold out means all of the stock available has been sold.

Darkfall only allows a few people to buy when they need more testers.

After an hour or so in the game last night (yes my FIRST hour) These following things stood out to me.

    • The graphics seem dated. It had a very eq2 look to me.
    • After the initial (maybe 30 second) load I saw no other load times except when I died.
    • Other player can and will steal your kills.. and then kill you and take what you have.
    • I was only killed in newbie quest hotspots (I still dont have a single goblin axe)
    • My starting city (Alfar, somthing Deep) was suprisingly large and complex.
    • I saw about 15 unique players total. I heard complaints that no one was on and those complaints were answered that everyone was in defense of their cities at that time (or attacking them I assume).
    • Character creation was fairly basic, no dimensional changes.
    • Being in the USA my ping rate was unacceptably high, 175 to 250. Good for an EU server though.
    • The whole sheath, click, drag drag drag drag, right click, unsheath of looting will take some getting used to.
    • Although I knew to expect it the realtime aspect of ranged combat (ie missiles are dodgable) really stood out to me.
    • I had to manually "check all files" for the game to do the initial patch.
    • 3 speeds of travel: walk run and sprint.
    • The sky was very well done.
    • I left the music on the whole time (yeah the WHOLE hour). it seemed setting appropriate and well done.
    • UI seems complex and an initial layout time is required.
    • For the small amount of time that I looked for it I could NOT find a quest log.

    Hope this helps someone, somehow.

nekrow, prepared to be flamed for saying the music is good.

The problem with comparing UO and EVE to darkfall is the pace. The realtime element may sound like a small "feature", but it makes all the difference. Both UO and EVE are point and click. So it does not matter how good you are there. In DF its FPS skill that matter.

    I actually agree.

The music is pretty good.  It does an excellent job of setting mood and ambiance in game.

The sky is also well done.

At least untill I notice the odd way the moon's are renedered.  I can't explain it, you gotta watch it.

Daylight however is pretty good.   The sun looks excellent coming through the clouds and you can actually see what should be storm clouds rolling across the sky untill they reach you and things get a little darker.

Rest of the game is crap though.

You derail every thread you enter here, resort to insults, and blatantly lie about the game, and I'm the troll?

    The good

    • Adds a little bit of Danger back into the MMO genre. Constantly watching your back, not running blindly into combat.  Consquence for your actions.
    • Brings back the old requirement of having a group to play with.
    • Huge land.  Lots of ruines/sea to explore.  Islands, snow, dwarfs.
    • Real time combat. You need to aim arrows/magic.  When you swing your sword, you can miss your target.
    • Being new to the game doesn't completely wreck you.   You can still kill higher level people if you time things just right.
    • Anyone can do anything.  You can be a mage/archer, Or a Sword warrior with fireballs a plenty. You don't need an ALT to go chop wood. Just pick up an axe and have at it.

    The Bad

    • Death can be a pain.  Anyone can take your stuff when you die.
    • Lack of wildlife/mobs makes the world feel dead and empty
    • Not really solo friendly.  If you have awkward playing hours, or you started at a different time then you friends, you'll see a difference in play ability
    • Server stability during raids is terrible.  Which is sad because that's a main feature.
    • Everything feels the same as far as killing one skeleton or one goblin.  They all use the same tatics (attack - attack -attack until they are low on life, then run away in a swervy pattern)
    • Hacks/cheats/exploits.  They may have gotten rid of a lot of them, but people who profitted from the cheats (a lot of mobs were bugged to start.  They wouldn't fight back) still have their gains.  People exploit game machanics to avoid a lot of what makes the game fun (sieging for example)
    • No such thing as a fair fight.  Gank squads (or people) kill others who are solo or don't have the same numbers.
    • Naked fighting  and straight up zergs.
    • The game is a grind.  You don't have to stand in one area and kill the same thing over and over again, but it's usually the best tatic to go anywhere.  The basic strategy is go kill something over and over again.  Take the gains to the bank, repeat.  Since it's often more difficult to kill higher level mobs, yet you can kill 10 skeletons in the same time, it's therefor more profitable to just kill skeletons.  The downside is that you may not get any uber gear (which can be made by a crafter anyways), but you'll get the same skills up from whacking a goblin 10 times as you would from wracking a forest golem 10 times.
    • the game is incomplete.  And it shows.
    • Lack of things to fight over.  You basically fight over the ability to run from your bank to your bindstone quickly.

According to you they can sell 50K accounts for a server that holds 6-10k. Obviously if they have 20-40k subscribers, another completely bullshit number you made up by the way, they can't possibly be sold out. I'd give you a clue but you'd need another to know what to do with it.
