So how much fun are people having?

TrytoneTrytone Member Posts: 87

I'm trying to be fair about my mmorpg choice since in the longer run I just want to have fun, so the best choice is simply the game that provides the most fun. To be honest right now after being a warcraft fan since the get go and having an awesome time in the open beta (I wish EQ2 offered one but oh well) I'm leaning toward WOW or guild wars (having been made by former blizzard employees). But if people are really enjoying EQ2 I may consider it so it would be cool if I could get some feedback and such.

Main concerns:
1- Diversity within character classes (my assasin being different than all the others)
2- Engaging gameplay (not spamming spells or auto attack and leave)
3- Good roleplaying community, this one is my biggest concern because no one ever got into the storyline in EQ and roleplaying was pretty pointless, (especially because on all the servers I played on no one actually did it) are people getting into roleplaying in EQ2 RPing servers?

So... after being up for a day, there are no responses, either all the EQ2 people are playing or all of these aspects are non-existent. Whatever.

    Diversity?  Yes, plenty.

"Engaging"?   "Engaging" is in the mind of the beholder.   I and all my friends and guildmates love it (to give you our perspective, we loved our years in EQ).

Roleplaying?  Huh? =)  Maybe they do it on the roleplaying servers.  Don't know don't care.

Don't worry about the lack of responses.  Shobu will be along shortly to give you the bashing rundown.  Just take the opposite of what he says and you'll have the complete picture.

    1. Diversity - Its there in model customizations but not with equipment since it's level based you'll look like alot of others.  As far as skills and the like there really isn't much diversity.  Set skills you learn per level so your play style will likely be similar to someone with the same class choice.  However classes vary a good bit at the first and second branches so its not like all scout types will play the same.

    2. Engaging gameplay - At first was pretty engaging, and the grouping and using the attack wheel for combos was pretty cool and engaging but overall I got bored as a fighter or mage, and had fun the whole time as a scout.  Quests disengaged me quickly but overall I think it's just as engaging as most other similar MMO's have been, don't expect anything new.

    3. Roleplaying is the best i've ever seen in an online game if you join an RP server and interact with the pink named people (RP flag).  Only game I had more fun RP'ing in was a neverwinter nights server that would ban anyone OOC ever (strict but pretty interesting =))

Overall don't expect anything new other than graphics and some cool areas.  This game is a mixed bag since its pretty much a rehash of older MMO's with new graphics I think people were expecting alot more.  However, if you want more no fantasy themed MMO is going to give it to you I think.  WoW has pvp and less of a grind to disguise it but its all the same in the end.  Some of the lesser known projects might give you some diversity.

Well i am having fun, i just have one problem, in all my time playing (all 30 hours of it :P) my only complaint is the lack of zones, as in Antonica being the only real outdoor zone i have encounterd...

From what I read and have seen there seem to be about the same amount of zones as in FF XI which is pretty big and can be layed out decently.  The only problem thre is that you would see a ton of zones level 1-30 then you would be spending 10 levels at a time in one zone as you leveled which got old.  EQ2 zones are also alot bigger so expect to be spending more time per zone.

Diversity, absolutely none in EQ2 and the main reason why I quit before my free month was up.

In games like CoH, you had real diversity. Lets say you chose to become a Defender. Now you can then choose Dark powers and a secondary power. Or be more like  Doc with secondary powers as well. There were many combinations to choose from right at the start. Then as you level you can choose between powers or skip them and pick something else from secondary powers or pick up additional 3rd power group like flight, etc. Odds are very great your Defender would be quite different from my defender. While my Defender focused on controller type moves using lockdown and DOT attacks, your Defender might strictly be a healer. There was a lot of choices in that game.

In a game like SWG, you could be a Master Swordsman and something else. While your buddy might pick Doctor as well to buff himself, you might pick Fencer and TKM to maximize defenses. Again, some real diversity here.

Now with EQ2, absolutely none of the above examples apply here. If I pick Rogue at Level 10 Scout, thats it. When I level up to 11, my power is chosen for me. Same for 12 and up, no choices. So when you see another level 15 Rogue, he is exactly the same as you. Sure he might have bought a slightly better shield than yours but it will look the same bcause you're both limited to leather armor which all looks the same. His powers will also be the same. Again he might have bought a crafted apprentice 2 Sneak attack that uses 2 less mana and has 3 more HP to it. But in the end its the same boring old spell/attack the every single Rogue in the whole game has.

So to answer your question, Nope. EQ2 has zero diversity in its characters.

Well, i never played FF, but i really dont like spending all my time in one zone, like in EQ1 at level 16 everyone is in the crystal caverns, not me, i am in east karana whacking spiders.. i find it alot more entertaining to do what i want to do, not what the cookie cutter is.

Alright, I guess the perspective that I've had is about right, I think that I might play EQ2 if my friends from high school, just for the sake of keeping in contact. But I really like having a unique character, I guess that's out of the question in mmorpgs in general though... Maybe I'll stick to Neverwinter Nights, there are some pretty good RP servers and I can develop my character however I want. Just wish I had a bigger community and more epic environments. Thanks guys, maybe I'll look into Wish some more.... And seriously Shobu (even though that comment was pretty funny) you really are a plague on these forums.

I like this game a lot. At first I was like eh. and didnt play for a week. then i sat down one day and got in a group and had a blast. To tell you the truth. It all depends on the person. Look in the general discussion, somone made a chart compairing eq2 and wow, it might help you know what eq2 has to offer more than fans of a certain game can.

I have played pretty much every online game out there, currently my mage is up to lvl 14 in EQ and i am loving it.

I must admit all the good features i have found in other games have been "borrowed" and improved in this game.

I get no lag whatsoever on my DSL line, graphics are the best i have ever seen in a online game and my system isn't uber... nice and average :p

quest system is varied and engaging, combat is fun and alot more complex than i have seen before.

I havnt tried much trading, or tradeskills

    dont care about pvp

very very good "polished" game image   no bugs encountered at all

EQ is the most fun I've had in an online game for 5 years. AFter two weeks I'm still having a blast, and I can hardly put it down. I had to FORCE myself to log off early last night to do laundry because I hadn't done it since I bought the game!! Man that sucked.

All the people I know that played CoH are now playing EQ2.

All the people I know that played FFXI are now playing EQ2.

All the people I know that played WoW Beta are also now playing EQ2.

It's not for everyone, but it's definitely for most of the gamers I have played with. Maybe it will wear off in a few months and I'll be bored of it like I was with WoW in Beta. I hope that doesn't happen, but it didn't take me that long to get bored of WoW Beta. After only a few weeks, I just didn't see the point anymore.

I don't honestly know what EQ2 is like or even WOW for that matter, but I can tell you Guild Wars is the funnest MMOG's I have played in a long time. I'm curious my self, but at the same time, sceptical. I have been around the block more than a few times with MMOG's having played the first incantations of them like Meridian 59, Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and the Original EverQuest. Sence AC and EQ, most MMOG's follow a basic model now and you can expect similar game play and the like.

My only advice is to give it a shot, I'm sure they'll have a free trial sooner or later to attract new players, this my be the best option if you don't want to fork over $40-50 buck for a retail copy. Another MMOG I would suggest looking forward to is Wish. I'm not at liberty to say much about it, but it's going to be one awesome game, and if you were, or are a UO fan, you going to be in heaven. :)

    1. Diversity in Classes - Well I just reached my subclass a few days ago and its a Scout based class but I still like grouping with other scouts like rogues and bards.  Each have their own role to play, which makes it pretty diverse.  character models are pretty diverse and actually so are the clothing items, you just have spend alot of time to find them, make them, or buy them from game merchants.

    2. Engaging gameplay - techincally every MMO is the same in the long run, if you want super engaging combat look at FPS games.  Pretty much unless youre really good with figuring out great combonations with your attack and pulling off Group and Personal HO's the combat's spamming like every other game (loves it anyway)

    3. The RP servers are supposedly relaly great with the RP stuff, im on a non rp server, but I take my time to read everything I see including the quests.  Often all the quests, book drops and more offer stories, npc's offer stories.  They tell of the world's history and possible events that could happen again. Over all the game provides perfect tools for great RP societies, but there's always noobs or over zealous lets just run through it without reading people who sit and spam the ooc channel for answers to everything, when the answers are usually in the quests and maps.   I mean ...how many people come to Antonica looking for a newbie zone like The Forest Ruins and The caves!!

Over all I really enjoy the game, I've gone to several instanced zones, hae access to several more after working hard on quests of death!! The worlds outside of the city are large enough that each time through your likely to see something different.  It took me a while to figure out where everything is in Antonica, now Im in the Steppes and there's no maps so..every trip there is an adventure and a new landmark to try and remember.

Plus there's little down time as much as people say, some just get over excited if the server goes down for 10 mins for maintance and then shut up when the game runs better afterwards.  They've done several game patches so they're on top of fixing any bugs that people find.  They finally fixed a ton of mob problems in zones, now if they'd just add Stormhold onto the list that'd be great lol damn skellies hide in the walls when you fight sometimes right now Hehe :) or blip out to where you can't see them.  Over all no one really dies from these bugs so its not all bad.

I myself roleplay / ooc all the time just depends on the situation and the mood.

Right now I think the most appealing thing to me is the Heroic Opportunites, that sounds like they put a cool twist on the battles. What is the end result of a HO is it just extra damage? or a different ability that stems from the colective efforts of those who use it (crono trigger style kinda)? I wish I was rich so I could just buy every game and decide for myself... It's SO PATHETIC that i'm being torn into peices by games!!! Well I'm a loser 'till the day I die I suppose, and I couldn't be happier, thanks for all the imput. I now have absolutely no idea what to do, haha so I guess I'll just wait and see which game turns for better/worse.

    I had little fun honestly.

But I fear I'm pretty much burnt out on the whole genre.   For example, yesterday I bought WoW, and its so great I'm on this site posting instead of playing.   Ugh!

Give me action (like City of Heroes)

Give me character customization (like City of heroes)

    Let me TWINK!

Give me content like Ultima Online (like a house where I can put my LOOT and not just furniture)

Give me a skill System like EVE's (You train skills based on real time, which free's you up to do anything your heart desires whilst you level)  Skills progress on a timer even when you are offline!

    And graphics like Everquest2.

This is just my opinion of the game.   You notice I am not flaming anyone for likeing everquest 2.  I think it is possible for others to like the game and I give you my full permission to do so, so long as you give me permission not to like it!

I have seen the Arctic Circle... And it is round.
