Hello everyone,
I'm firstly writing this for some closure, or some advise on what to do.
Like 95% of people browsing these forums, I used to play WoW, i started playing this in US Beta (im from the UK), and lasted about 3 years, and decided to get my life back. After this time, why the hell can I not find a game which fulfills my gaming needs?
If we step away from the MMO side of things, I used to play MOHAA (Medal of Honor: Allied Assault) and was in the top 3 clans in Europe when this was popular. In C&C3 I was ranked in the top 10 in 1v1, and in the top 3 for Cossacks. All these games held competitiveness which kept my needs satisfied.
Now I have stopped playing these normal multiplayer games, and really wanted to get back into a really involved, solid game. Which proved to be very difficult.
The following games I have tried, which I'm guessing alot of are to dissagree with my opinions:
LOTRO: Not nearly enough PvP to make this exciting
Planetside: Very repetitive after a few days
DarkFall: My most recent, an unfinished game, which was released a year too early.
GuildWars: Too much of an instance, feel very alone in this MMO
City of Villains / Heroes: Out-dated graphics, and cack gameplay
Lineage II: Some smart stuff in this game, but ruled by Korean Farmers
WoW: Takes over your life, you are unable to achieve anything in this game within 4 hours
WW2O: Very out-dated graphics, and have to wait an hour to see an enemy
Hellgate London: Pure Grind Session
WAR: Alot of like WoW, but again, one of the most repetitive games I have played, anyone for a scenario? Or taking a keep?
EVE: I lost interest very early on, very hard for a new player to get anywhere.
I really am quite good when it comes to gaming, although I know it looks like I moan alot, I would please like some guidance, on whether a good game is coming out this year, which I can spend some time on?
I apologise if I have annoyed anyone, this really was not my intention.
Regards

i'm playing my psp right now.
Honestly, it seems to me that what you are really looking for will not come in an MMORPG. It seems to me that you want a game you can jump right into and be the top of the game again which is not going to happen in and MMORPG. It takes time to develope a character even in the simplist of MMORPG's. Guild Wars is about as close as you come, but unless you have friends you are playing with, you will end up being alone.
There are very few mmo's out right now that I am getting excited about. I quit WoW last fall after a few years of playing it - in that time had multiple attempts at quitting.
This last week I have been in between semesters for school and havent been very busy and its left me wanting to play anything. After looking around at every game I could find I just wasnt impressed like you said. As others also say on these boards (specifically the LFgame board) there is no game out right now that is satisfying the needs of players like wow did for so long. We all want this game that has much better pvp and pve that doesnt take so long to accomplish in one sitting and a large list of other things but it just isnt there.
Same thing happened after PreCu SWG went away - I just was messing around for a while and kept going back until NGE royally messed it up. Then came wow. I think right now many of us are just waiting for that magical game that isnt there.
GW has excellent competitive PvP but your complains seem to come from the PvE side. There has to be another reason or sum of smaller ones for you to not like this game. You prolly didn't play enough to get hooked or, then again, maybe it wasn't for you. This should be a game for you unless you're more into FFA PvP and/or RvR. It is the game of choice if you want player skill to matter anything.
Oh, and you shouldn't bash LOTRO for not having enough PvP since it's clearly a PvE game with PvP as an afterthought.
Other than that. Atleast I'm going to apply to some betas and play some crap for free and make an effort of making it better. If I can't get into any, there's always more good quality SP games out there.

My current game: Bioshock. www.youtube.com/watch
The underwater world, Rapture, is amazing and fascinating and worth the 20.00 bucks to explore. The gameplay is fun and engaging, and the story is brilliant. FOUR out of FOUR stars game in MY view. This game is not a typical shooter.
(aside: they are actually producing a movie on this game right now).

I have left MMORPGs because they are not making games for people like me anymore ("immersion gamers") and expect 15.00 for essentially the same gameplay. I would be a fool, or an addict, to do that. I am neither.
The tastes and preferences of "commercialized gamers" totally dominate the development of MMORPGs today, and innovation and the creative process are lost and blind as a result.
He said he didn't like instances. Pretty hard to get "into" the game when instances are everywhere and that is what he detests about the game.
I hear Dark Age of Camelot is making a comeback.

Clearly, you haven't played WoW for a while.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift

I was thinking the same thing.. but wasn't going to say anything.
You're basically looking for an mmorpg that takes skill. You won't find it. They're designed to let lazy people feel awesome.
You make it sound like its a bad thing. . .
To the OP maybe you should try out Chronicles of spellborn. Its skill based and very pvp oriented.
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
With that in mind, I would suggest looking into MAG. It's a PS3 game created by the same team that made some of the SOCOM games. It's supposed to be a 256-person game made up of 8-man teams going head to head:

Given the size of the game, its emphasis on leadership going to the most skilled players, and your previous love for military style FPS games, it might be worth checking out.

The latest game play vid's for MAG look awesome. I can't wait for this game and Uncharted 2 MP is looking real sweet as well.

It may help if you mention what you liked about those games youve tried in addition to what you dont like. Do you prefer PvP or PVE? Large scale encounters or smal groups?
Have you looke into AoC, Vanguard?
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I dont think there is much good out atm.
Have you noticed the trend of the threads?
Everyone who doesnt have a game they are enjoying atm are looking for something new, something better, something different, SOMETHING.
I dont have a solution, well I do but its nothing you havent heard before.

"Too much of an instance, feel very alone in this MMO" is what he said. I gathered the reason was not the instances but the loneliness in the game. So I highlighted the part that actually is where the loneliness comes from. He did not say he hates instances, he said he felt lonely. There's always people playing PvP.
I can't help if your immersion is easily broken. The PvP matches are played in instances which is a very good thing if you ask me. But there's no immersion in MOHAA, or in any other games the OP mentioned. GW is his best bet to get the same kind of competitive experience in a MMORPG.

I'm done with mmo's until something good comes along.
I played all the big p2p mmo's aside from eve and lotr. Just recently AoC, but i have to say it was the most fun i had playing an mmo in years. Know why? Cause they did something different, the combat system, while far from perfect is entertaning and feels fresh.
The main problem with mmo's is that at the end of the day, they're all the same. Just the same games over and over with different skins and slightly better graphics. I know mmo's will always have similarities, but nobody tries to innovate, we are seeing some new games pop up with real time combat that actually take a little skill, thats already a big step forward from the "dice roll, hit the same 2 buttons over and and i win" systems.
Anyway, right now i'm playing a bunch of single and multiplayers game and i am having fun. I'll be looking at mortal online and champions online with they come out, if they are the same crap. I'll wait longer.
