I just hopped in game, clicked the first person I saw, selected Add Friend, he accepted, and he is now on my Friends list.

Oh good.  That'll help a bit.  It was still not working properly when I tried last.  It might be a nice idea to be able to invite people to be friends when they're offline, too.  I always thought the way you invite/accept global friends in CoH was a nice touch.  I still think they need to have more games that call for cooperation but I also think they have left it very easy to add all sorts of games and I hope they do.

    Agreed on all counts.

The friend request in Free Realms doesn't add a person to your list unless the other person accepts, so that might be why offline additions aren't in Free Realms.

they could also do something like Wzard101 does where the exchnaging of friend codes  opens up more robust/unfiltered normal mmo type chat and make the exchanging of friend codes a "parental/cardholder" ability only.

I think the problem is seperating the 'game' from the 'medium'..

The 'game' is just somthing within the client - to me FR is just another  facebook or to go further, it's basically a safer Second Life, theres no instant  commenties there either it's all been made by the players over the years, it wouldn't shock me if SOE accounce more player made content gets thrown in a few months down the line.

This and Wizard 101 are really good alturntives to things like WoW/WAR/EQ2 for anyone really, it's nice to see the MMO industry comming full circle and moving back to the 'gaint chat room' aspect of MMOs and less about the 'eSport', back when EQ had that 'balance' everything seems to lack these days.

Free Realms (like Wizard101) is just one big chat room, it's early days yet but it's going to be interesting to see how this game is handled

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

    I'm curious

You people who is so quickly to judge the OP on his experiences with comments such as "you get what you put into it" and "there is plenty of features that promotes socialization"

How much chatting and socialization are you witnessing in the game right now MINUS the people you dragged into the game with you.

having played since launch i see more chatting and socialization going on in Wizard101 than here. I have done more stuff with players in Wizard101 then i have with people in Free Realms and trust me it is not from lack of trying. I do not stand around waiting for somebody to say hi.

You really have to be blind not to see that the community thing leaves a lot to be desired. One thing that would help would be a more globalized chat.

Well coming from a fellow parent, I play FR and enjoy it very much. My daughter will be creating her first character tonight. But to be honest I could care less if they don't have free chat in it(but they do). I'm not looking to have my child or me build a social network through a online game. That's what school is for. I think what these guys have in mind is that kids at school will talk about this game and all start playing together.

Just listening to commercials on Disney channel and I hear ads for Wizard 101 playing behind me. Now I don't know about you, but that sends me a strong message about who they are trying to target so, no, I do not see this as a casual social game for adults to find other like minded adults in. I truly believe that this was targeted for younger gamers and their network of friends and family. Now is it the developers fault that some adults find it fun to hang out in this virtual theme park? No I do not. Many adults find places like Disney World enjoyable at any age. But to say Disney world should sell alcohol in the Magic Kingdom just because adults go their too is not gonna happen. So consider this the Magic Kingdom of MMOs, everyone is welcome to join in the fun but free chat found is some more mature MMOs will not do.

I do agree that it would be nice to provide a title for parents to wear over their heads so they can identify other parents. Maybe call them Chaperons or something.

I'm an adult and I play Wizard101. I have no special attraction to youth oriented games, I play wizard because I like turn based combat and there isnt any other turn based mmos close to its level of quality.  Just because an adult plays a "kid" game doesnt mean hes a predator or has some strange love of kid stuff. And I can't speak for free realms but wizard101's combat is very in depth and I cant imagine a 14 year old getting very far.

Another thing that really turned me off was the fact reading Leaderboards are limmited to Members only... I really did consider playing this game a lot to get good at the Kart Racing/Demo-Derby games but after reading only members get full use of the leaderboards I might just pass.  As cute and fun as this single player experience is I see no reason to pay for it.  It feels far to limmited and bubble like.

Your a 22 yr old (So your profile tells me) inside a childs game and you need to accept that fact and stop thinking this MMO is built for adults, it's not, it's been specifically aimed at youngsters and as such the lvl of interaction has been limited to prevent any minors from seeing offensive material, and quite rightly so.

The ppl coming here complaining about the game so far have not been the target audience, I have played Freerealms and I have gone in there expecting to find a kiddies game and guess what, thats exactly what I found.

I haven't gone into Freerealms expecting to find WoW's PvE or DAoC's RvR, or SWG's lvl of crafting, I went into Freerealms to play alongside my 7yr old daughter who is absolutely loving the game right now and has already got her school friends who are all the same age as her playing the game, and they all seem to enjoy it aswell.

As for the leaderboard being for members only, well it's a feature that some ppl enjoy striving to become top of, ofc it's going to be part of the subscription package because of that.

Your kidding right? my 7yr old daughter was lvl 19 in Wizard 101 within a week and understood how the battles worked perfectly before she left to play Freerealms.

I must admit though I did like their idea of combat in Wizard 101.

     Ok, My turn!

First off, this game just came out. People are out exploring, questing, leveling, etc.

Second, I have met many nice people and made around 15 friends so far.  Only four of those being people I know already.

Third, you are not limited by pre-made sentences.

The games fault? Hell no. I'm in a group and almost every 5 minutes it asks me if I want to join my group in a mini-game they're about to go do. (Which I might add, teleports you back to where you were if you accept)

The game is great, the community is great, what just are you expecting? People to come up to you and start shaking your hand and giving you stuff?

I think the implemention of "clubs/guilds" will improve the social aspects of the game.
