There are several points that I'll cover here that in my opinion make WoW stand out from the pack. First and formost is the "fun" factor. Is the game fun, the answer is a profound YES. I actually woke up this morning thinking how I couldnt wait to play, been a long time since a mmorpg made me feel that way.
Second major advantage is the lack of zones. With WoW everything is blended together which means no instancing to go inside an area. From what I've read some areas designed for groups (havent seen one yet) are instanced. However, for what Ive seen its zone free and thats a good thing for immerson. Im looking at you EQ2 cough cough. Walk from Abby to Goldshire, if this were EQ2 that would have involved zoning. Then head from Goldshire over to Crystal Lake to fish, again if EQ2 would mean another zone instancing. Decide to finish that quest in Maclure Vineyards, yep in EQ2 another instancing zone. Add up all that loading time, the fact that you might leave friends behind because your zone was full, and it really kills immersion. This is in my opinion a huge factor that makes WoW stand out. How refreshing to be able to walk around freely without a loading screen popping up.
3rd major advantage to this game is the nice balance of solo and group play. I never felt I had to group but I did for fun in a few places like looking for Goldtooth in the Mines and the Princess Pig at the Pumkin farm. Ive never been so comfortable with knowing my choices are wide open. I dont have to spend hrs looking for effective groups who end up doing their own quests, etc. I also enjoy the quick healing time. For once my downtime in combat is very fast. I dont think any mmorpg has such a fast recovery time for combat types.
4th factor is the side stuff like fishing. More importantly, they arent just eye candy tossed at ya. They actually are beneficial. You can make some decent money and find loot by fishing. Plus the cooked foods are quite useful. I was able to make my own stack of cooked frogs with decent heals and also made 14 silver pieces today, not bad for a 2 day newb.
Overall, the game is very engaging and just plain fun to play. I cant wait to decide what to do tomorrow night after Turkey

Hm. I thought you said that this was a review, not a comparison.
