TOR UPDATE: Diverse worlds of the old Republic

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062

http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090501_001 watch :)

My thoughts and feelings on the new update:

PROS:

+The adventures are written to guide players through the worlds, but allow them to 'travel off the beaten path to EXPLORE'. Sounds player friendly as well as allowing for some discovery...

+Each world feels and looks unique. They appear to be completely hand crafted down to every last detail.

+ORD MANTELL: "PEOPLE WILL STEAL YOUR STARSHIP" -> Our STARSHIPS huh? Good stuff :D

+The design is pretty damn stunning...

CONS:

-Some of the worlds look very 'washed out' and monochrome in my opinion whcih makes it look very 'flat' like a cartoon instead of a 3D living world.

-There seem to be NO DAY/NIGHT CYCLES, which has been talked about before for 'ambiance reasons', but personally I'm against the decision. It's ALWAYS going to be DAY on Tython?

-So far from what we've seen, there aren't many LARGE OPEN areas. Mostly valleys, hallways and thoroughfares. All which definately feel constrained through environment design which seems to completely contradict the whole 'exploration' aspect.

Can't wait to learn more about the game :)

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I agree with most of your Pros and Cons. I feel they are being vague and contradicting about their statements cause they are saving it. I feel like this is a advertising ploy to keep us glued into what they are going to show us next. Show us something pretty and we will wait for something else. As far as the video, it looks pretty exciting.... I would like it to be a little more realistic, but i dont mind anime. I dont mind games that look like that, FFXI, AION, RF online. I dont need it to be realistic, what I need it to be is more on with Star Wars. Like I actually feel like a Smuggler or Bounty Hunter. Im more about the immersion factor than I am about the graphics. Thats only my opinion and Im pretty sure there are a lot of people who would like the graphics to be a little more realistic for their tastes. But I concur, I cannot WAIT for more updates!

The game just continues to sound better and better. I just hope this doesn't turn out to be a hype flop like some of the previous games that have come out recently. I have confidence in BioWare though.

Very nice video update!  Been a long time since I've been really looking forward to an MMO....and most of all I hope this will rekindle the Star Wars in me as its all but been burned out from those 3 crappy new movies....anyway....

WOW. First off, they seem to be putting a LOT of planets into this game. Each one will have it's own unique character to it with its own backstory. Second, it seems to be a lot of open worlds for people like me who love to just get out there and explore. Third, some of those worlds will be more dangerous than others so it won't be an easy walk in the park.. I can already see carebears complaining on the forums because their precious ship or weapon got stolen from something unknown. You don't see that in many MMOs.

lol @ getting you stuff stolen. Great dynamic. I'm sure there will be a few times that gets frustrating for all of us. Always remain on your toes on certain planets, and don't go afk, or talk to strangers I guess.

There are speculation threads on the forums about this but most agree that people are reading into what they said far too deeply. They used that to describe the type of environment the planet has, not that it would actually happen.

Yeah, I've pretty much seen all the speculation threads there since I post almost daily on those forums. The thing is though, like I said over on the TOR forums a lot of the info that they are releasing is stuff I read about over 2 years ago in a rumor-leak of information about this new SW MMO.

The rumored starship theft was one of the many things they have mentioned that was also mentioned in this document I speak of. Also a lot pre-announcement interviews, almost word for word things were brought up by the developers. I expect space to be the next update we get. Kinda like how they hinted at Bounty Hunter, then the next week it was confirmed as a class.

I’ll say this, they hint at things, and they hide things. Marketing and LEC approves everything you here in those videos. It’s all intentional and will be released at the speed that they have set leading up to the launch date.

Personally I think it's a great idea and fits in perfectly with the IP. You NEVER left your ship or equipment unattended on any world that the Hutts controlled because it was always a world run by criminals. This is great for immersion and I hope the developers NEVER change their mind on stuff like this because of the inevitable whines of the carebear crowd.

wow awesome, I cant wait. However I do hope there is more open places to explore, I really hate it when there is an area in a game I cannot get to because of invisible walls..

I dont think if we get ships it would get stolen, I think hes just describing the theme of the planet.

Agreed and I really hope they do not change it. If you want to play a StarWars game then it should feel like StarWars.

    EA, it's in the game!

Until we nerf it out of the game.

So they modify a few npcs with a few differences from the original npcs that stand around and just say useless crap no one even reads.  So Bioware so far has BIG AREAS TO EXPLORE.  Think I've heard that about Oblivion and Fallout 3.  So is there any atempt at making this an MMO that will actually be different?  Maybe they should focus on making a "solid" game engine above just selling another game series for a few quick bucks.  Meh whatever, just hope the game doesn't crash every 5 seconds.

When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?

It began as a vague feeling of discomfort.  And as I learn more about this game and watch the videos it just feels to me the playing of this game will be like being inside a comic book.

Yes, the comic book has different chapters (worlds).  Yes, the comic book does tell a story.  But, but...

I had hoped for vast worlds where the two sides manned by real players battle each other.  It appears as though I'll be disappointed.

    Sigh...

Meh, these type of people have to be dealt with in every game that's in development. Usually the ignorants responses are:

    Another World of Warcraft

Another World of Warcraft in space

    Another EVE

They are avoiding puting in the features I want because they are rushing the game out.

    Another POTBS

    Another pew pew

    etc.etc.etc.

You can look at these people's post history and it's pretty consistent. They don't bother to read Faqs and no matter how many ways you destroy their ignorant myths, they just continue to spew the same garbage.Best to just ignore these people.

    Very impressive.

This game is further along in the development process than I thought it was.

*prays the next update will be on pvp, faction/class/alignment mechanics and ships/vehicles*

I am really getting hungry for info now. This was a great appetizer in that regard.
