This supposed patch to fix things is no longer on test and is the current build on live. I have 3 days left until my primary sub expires so I logged in to see if this "patch to fix it all" has done its job, sadly it seems to have done nothing, Cap and AP both have the constant AE farm spam.

I'll go back and look in a few months time, right now fixing the farm spam in zones doesn't seem to be a dev priority, who knows by then I may have found a game which I enjoy enough to not even worry about checking CoX.

It would be nice if they would post the patch notes at the same time they post the patches, instead of a week later... Now we have this patch that supposedly fixes the farming issues but we have no idea HOW it has supposedly done this since we have no idea if it has done anything at all.

Maybe it will blow over once the newness of the AE wears off, but a major shift like this in the way a community plays a game is a big red flag for me when I'm an already contented player.

I don't have any hard numbers for ya nolf, but I can safely say that CoH is -and has been- loosing subscribers.  I had noticed it before I ceased play in July '08, and I see no reason why players would have stopped leaving the game since then.
Now if your familiar with the "life-cycle" of products, you can say that this is normal and maybe even expected.  But I believe that this abandonment by players is being amplified by the constant mismanagement of the game.
For example.  My main reason for leaving CoH was the absolute disregard for the PvP portion of the game by the management team.  It seemed that the PvP was showing little improvement with each new issue and nothing fresh was being added.  Compound this with the fact that several bugs were going unfixed.
In the months leading up to July, I had been noticeing more and more the absense of well known players.  I came to find out later that these players had cancelled their subscriptions.  I decided that this was a good idea, maybe until a few new Issues had been released to address my reasons for leaving. I had planned on returning to the game.  Then Issue 13 came out and, figuratively speaking, took an elephant shit on the part of the game I enjoyed most.
nolf, you sound real bumbed-out in your post so I'll end this reply on a positve note.  Champions Online is in the final stages of completion and gaining momentum for release.  I've heard this game reffered to as "City of Heroes 2" on several occasions now.  Maybe your time to leave CoH1 has come.

Have fun in Champions Online. I hear it doesn't have ANY PvP at all.

This is incorrect. There is PvP in CO out of the box.

Or you can go to the test server forum and see the patch notes from when this patch was put on test last week.

AND, a discussion on how well it was working.

so, NO, no pvp worth a damn or worth mentioning.

it shouldn't be a priority.  not where there's as many bugs, and problems (does placate work correctly for stalkers yet, since stalkers were released three years ago?) AND farming has been around for ever.

so now, instead of PI being spammed, it's AP.  no one forces you to read bcast.  so, your complaint is that, in a game with no pvp servers, people are 'farming'.  seriously?

jealous that your "grinding" doesn't keep up?  otherwise, what is your problem with what others are doing, if they're having fun?

the game isn't built around you.  just like the fast lane on the interstate isn't built for the person that drives 69 in a 70 mph zone, and stays directly to the side of someone in the other lane, effectively blocking traffic from passing... ESPECIALLY when they're holding up traffic, and there's signs that state "slower traffic move to the right lane".  it's REALLY NOT your interstate and you're NOT in a position to decide that your time is more important than the 30 people whom you're blocking.   same thought in "oh i don't like people that farm, they should just grind slowly like me".

    bah.

These are the people that the Dev's are listnening to? Sometimes you have to be careful. They made all the farmers out to be leapers and got a patch out to help the players who were so bothered by the Meow spam? What happens? The zealots quit anyway. I was on last night and many people didn't even know what the patch was for or that the days of Riktti farms was ending.  Way to jump the gun.

For the record, the spam in Atlas that everyone moaned about was nothing compared to most other MMORPG newbie zones. Go to Neriak or Barrens and listnen to the innane dribble of the masses there? At least in CoX the people were shouting for a group even if it was a farm mission. If no one is looking for a group then you can't have a game. You spend 80% of your time in this game in an instance with no spam so not sure why this bothered everyone so bad?

Oh well, I will keep playing till they ban me for killing a bugged Rikti, till they banhammer this game to closure or till another better Supes game comes out. It's a shame the AE made the game fun again for a lot of people and then this talk of bans makes it seem like they don't  know how to do anything from a PR standpoint?

Oddly, the only people talking about banning the players of the meow farms and whatnot are the player (and nonplayers on other wabsites). The only people getting a ban, according to Positron's statement would be the very worst offenders of putting UP the meow farms in the first place. Then for the meow farmers the most severe offenders would be getting punishments up to and including de-leveling or removal of completely PLed characters.

Regardless though, horrible PR and (because it seems it was fairly widespread) a generally bad idea on the de-leveling/character removal side of things.

I reiterate that Posi could have been full of hot air and venting when he typed that up. I wonder if he realizes all the datamining that would go into tracking ALL the players of ALL the MEOW farms?

However from what I've seen on the boards and from a cursory scan of the AE, it seems like the MEOW folk are indeed the more if not the most "egregious" as Posi puts it.

Horrible PR and bad idea is an understatement.  They are looking at some subscription loss if this happens.

when UO was starting off, you didn't have a lot of choices for the then-infant mmo-scene.  mark jacobs lost me after i had time to digest his "we don't have official forums because of all the death threats staff would receive."  others have lost me for equally inane statements.

posi... just outright threatening the playerbase because he doesn't like that mere players are (still) smarter and more wily than he?

i had no intention of trying out champ online; but, if i want to play a super hero game, i might have to now.  until emmert starts acting stupid.

Given the opinion that many regard Emmert with, there is a feeling of doom around CO, but I'll be trying it as well.

The ones I'm waiting for are Star Wars Old Republich and DCUO.

Outright threatening the playerbase? Granted, it's a stupid idea, but exactly where is he threatening the playerbase? Unless, of course, you consider setting rules and punishments for breaking the rules a threat, which they aren't.

Even the retroactive de-leveling (not banning) for massive exploiters isn't really a threat. It's dumb, but not threat.

Also, Emmert has been known to act horribly stupid when it comes to PR comments and gameplay decisions for about five years now, so if that's your deciding factor wait until DCUO.

Yes, Emmert and Posi have both made some PR blunders over the years,  and I have many a mixed feeling about CO.   I'm sure I'll try CO but I doubt it would be more then a trial run.

Everything I've read about DCUO I like, especially since it looks like among the power sets there are "Force of Light" which I can have channeled through a ring, take fly as a travel power and will power as my main attribute....... "Hi...my name is Hal Jordan..."

Given that I'm a fan of the current GL story line and the upcoming Blackest Night, I can see myself with a spectrum of ring wielders in DCUO.

As to COH,  I'm waiting to see the MA changes, and what MA badges are staying, and which ones will change (50,000 TEST kills? a tad much), and which ones will go. (LOSE THE STAR RATING BADGES).

so, for it to be a threat, he has to threaten physical violence?  like going to your house and punching you in the face?

oooo if you violate/abuse the rules, rules that we're being intentionally vague about, and exploit a system that we built/tested for over a year, and exploit a system which we released, knowing it was farmable and exploitable, if you dare to take advantage of items we can't be bothered to fix -- oh, we're going to delevel you and ban you... if you keep on doing this, and you don't read this post and you don't pay attention to things on the forums since you enjoy playing the game and you don't waste your time spending countless hours on the forums.

nope, no threats there, if we're considering physical violence as the standard for a threat.

maybe you, and a small handful of others DID NOT level ANY toons like mad... but i watched many many many people (quite a few of the people who were vocally against this, and they participated, and they also had toons leveled with fire tank herding, and they also took advantage of winter lord xp, and they certainly joined in on super teams during double xp weekends -- all plainly exploits and all have never been threatened to be banned or deleveled)...

so, i'm sorry, based upon the complete hypocrisy i witnessed ingame (by people who i know their global and they joined teams i was on AND they have made numerous posts against doing what they were themselves doing...), i can only assume the same would exist here, ESPECIALLY on names not specifically tied to a coh account.   oooooo i'm so much better, that's cheating... yeah, if that hypocrisy is happening on the official boards (and people just blatantly lying about their participation), i'm sure the % of liars/hypocrites would HAVE to increase exponentially in an environment of COMPLETE anonymity.

so, how does any of this adversely affect any of you?

still haven't gotten any answers, still just looks like a bunch of control freak attitudes, and lag is soooooooooo not an answer.  if lag is how it adversely affects you; then, you have not understood the question at all.

He never said he'd ban any PLer, just the extreme offenders of posting the PL missions. In any case I just see it as clarifying rules and informing players of the consequences of breaking said rules, but if you wanted to look at it from the perspective of a threat I suppose you could. The game already threatens you with banning for harassing people or doing any number of other things, and hey, the government threatens you with possible jail time for not paying taxes too (plenty of people think taxes are stupid too ya know).

so, how does any of this adversely affect any of you?
Come to think of it, how it affects me is somewhat irrelevant. What matters is how it affects CoH as a whole, and honestly I couldn't say one way or the other. I've seen interesting arguments that massive PLing is good for the game (which I really don't agree with, but they were thought-provoking) and arguments that the massive PLing is harmful to the long-term stability of the game (which the devs obviously agree with).

All in all the more egregious exploiters will end up loosing access to characters that they've had for all of what, 3 weeks now, and they (along with possibly many more) will loose some levels on established characters. I don't see that as being all that big a deal personally. We obviously disagree on that point though I suppose.

Also no, I didn't level any of my characters like mad. I got some good XP and leveled a couple of my characters, at nice clips, but that's because MA's completely nixed travel time and most of my characters have a good chunk of rested XP to burn though.

I got some good XP and leveled a couple of my characters, at nice clips, but that's because MA's completely nixed travel time and most of my characters have a good chunk of rested XP to burn though.

what is relevant, and you are either willfully ignoring it, or you're completely new (or just a noob) to the game and acting like your not... is factual information.

fire tanks, herding entire maps, pling folks from 1-50 in a couple of days (or less) - exploit? yes.  extremely abused by a LOT of people?  yes.  for months?  yes.  any action taken, any threats made?  max aggro was lowered.  game mechanic change, effectively "nerfing" this aspect.  threats? no  hullabaloo and people QQing "cheat cheat cheat"?  if it was, it was in the same hypocritical fashion as what we're witnessing.   the last one is my opinion based upon my experiences.  the rest are fact.

winter lord -- exploit?  yes.  abused by MANY?  yes.  people threatened FOR abusing it?  no.  people make a big ruckus about it?  again, probably the same hypocrites.

super teams.  a super team is an sg/vg (more likely -MANY sgs/vgs in order to house all the people wanting to exploit the game), composed of specific ATs/powersets/builds, with the express intent of exploiting ingame mechanics to make said team incredibly powerful and able to level at insane rates.  exploiting - it is even BOASTED as being exploitation of game mechanics in many super team threads -- none of which threads have EVER been locked or mod'ed.  extremely abused by MANY individuals -- yes, especially on double xp weekends.  people QQ about it - nope, not in the slightest, because it's only players abusing, exploiting and pushing in-game mechanics as far as they can.

katie speed runs.  exploits massively abused by many players?  indeed - yes.  anyone threatened in any form?  no.  recipes threatened to be removed? no.  IOs threatened to be removed? no.  game mechanic change where you only get uber benefits from one run a day per tf/sf, also, doesn't drop tickets, rewards... reward merits.

apply your argument to these items which either went on for many months, and the game mechanics were simply changed (oh look, they changed rikti comm officers), and nothing resembling a threat was made (hmm changed rikit comm officers and still posi felt the need to trash talk the people that enable him to have a job, not just a monthly sub, but ingame adverts, and buying those ridiculous booster packs).

if you honestly can not see the hypocrisy in doing this 180 on how this gaming company has conducted business for 5 years... then, i can't help you.   some of us have memories that stretch farther back than last week.  i COULD add more to the list; but, these few examples do extend to, quite literally, 10s of thousands, if not 100k+ individuals, and who knows how many characters.   super teams have never been even regarded as a bad thing... even though they are touted as being created with the intention of abusing and exploiting ingame mechanics.

we have literal years, and tens of thousands (100k+) examples of abuse/exploitation/whateveryouwanttocallit -- being O K with THIS gaming company.  no?  go to the player event forum right now, you WILL find super team threads.

opine all you want, quote whatever supposed rules you want... i have all this actual activity which disputes your opinions and how YOU think the rules have been enforced for the past five years.

this post applies to everyone, not just the quoted individual.

but please, feel free to provide evidence to dispute common knowledge exploits, which are, well, indisputable facts.  unless, of course, you just lie.

edit:   some people should post less, and play more...

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Oh look, I exploited the fact that my attack powers can defeat enemies to get xp .... We obviously have a different opinion on what an exploit is and is not. About the only thing you mention that I consider to be a straight-up exploit of the system is the whole Winter Lord affair and even then I'm not sure if it truly fits. There's a difference (to me) between using a power/powerset/at (even if it's an overpowered one) or running a mission/story arc/tf and specifically creating a bit of content so that it can only be populated by an enemy that gives drastically out-of-proportion XP when compared to its difficulty with the sole intent of PLing as fast as you humanly can.

Seriously now, how the flipping heck do you consider making a specific SG team an exploit?

You realize how silly it is to suggest I should play more and post less when you've posted nearly twice as much in two-thirds the time yes? Oh no. I post about 1.25 messages a day over on the CoH forums ... however will I get any of my gaming in around my massive and time-consuming forum posting habit. <gasp>

    ...

    I mean come on now.

I'm just afraid the rest of the game is going to turn into a ghost town based on what I've seen the last couple of weeks.

It will have arena matches. Not the kind of pvp most people really want.

arena matches = dueling = extremely lame and filled with weaksauce & stupidity.

so, NO, no pvp worth a damn or worth mentioning.

out of curiousity... which comics are the ones where heroes go someplace and beat the tar out of each other for fun and practice?

sure isn't the xmen's danger room.

Nah, arenas are a true test of ones skill inside the framework of a games pvp. Ganking is not. Thanks for trying though.

I disagree, I've played many, many types of pvp in games and, while randomly ganking people can be fun I guess, it's akin to running up to someone and sucker punching them instead of actually having a 1 on 1 fight with them. Arena (prepared) pvp is a true testament of ones skill inside a games pvp metagame. That's why, ya know, they have tournaments for real life money based on this...lol

On top of this they've all but offically announced they plan to release a villain version of the game in posts, which is undoubtedly going to bring open pvp zones just as City of Villains did in City of Heroes.

Regardless the fact still remains that there will, in fact, be pvp in CO. I hate to come off as aggressive and, I apologize. It just really urks me when people think that randomly running around and fighting people with half their health bars or when you and your friends take on a much smaller group of opposing players as "real" pvp. I agree that I do want this in game because it can create some really fun and interesting moments, however if I had to choosee only one to be in a launch I would choose the more skill dependant arena based pvp.

If you don't think it can be fun check out Guild Wars sometime it's got an amazing pvp system in place, and gank free!

As for your question- you must not read many comics, I guess? Superheroes have been fighting each other for sport (training) and other reasons throughout the history of comics.

Arena PvP in CoH is the only PvP I've ever liked and that's due to it being gank free.   I don't consider it any test of anyone's skill when a group of players descend upon one or two players in a PvP zone and pummel them into the ground.

Well, I suppose it could be a test of skill for the gankee - how long can he withstand the onslaught, how many gankers can he take down before he himself goes down. But yeah, 8-on-1 is not much of a test for the 8.

Yeah 8 on 1 is more a shining example of being gang assaulted. Some characters and the player that uses the character may be able to outfight them, but odds are they go down in minutes.
