Laptop for gaming

NegativeJoeNegativeJoe Member UncommonPosts: 218

I need to find a  good gaming laptop. Started looking around, doing some research and tentativly settled on one i think is just insane for the price. (gateway p-7805u fx) quad processer, 4gb ddr3, 9800m gts, pretty much nails my 3 biggest concerns.

After reading some forums, I alwasy seem to come across yet another site i never heard of (xoticpc) or another brand i didn't look into (mci) .

So i figure i will ask here.  I have been a hater of gatway, hp, ec from way back in the day and have built my own the last 2 comps i had so have not looked into pretty much any company like this in years. Looks like they are pretty good at what they do now from what i can see.

Anyone have a better deal, nicer comp, good site, random advice or anything to help me out before i pull the trigger on this one? Don't want to go over $2k.

(disclaimer: i know desktops are better, cheaper, easier, taste better, go to church and pray more, say please and thank you, and brush after every meal. so no need to post telling me unless i can fit that desktop into a normal sized briefcase, set it up in under 10 seconds, and carry it with me everywhere i go)

That and the cheaper sibling p-7805u (you're actually looking at the 7808) are actually the laptops I finally came up with after looking around. Not that I have either one so I can't give you first hand advice :)

Both only have 1440x900 resolution displays but to me that's actually a benefit - running at 1920x1200 would be very hard on a laptop like that, so better to have the native resolution be something reasonable for gaming. With a 17" screen the higher resolution isn't quite so necessary anyway.

I'm not convinced the quad core and 500gb drive @ 5400rpm (vs 320gb @ 7200rpm) is worth $500 bucks in that system though and the dual core one is actually clocked faster which might mean more in current games. But if you don't mind the extra expense it might be worth it just in general.

Asus also offers some laptops in that price range which are pretty cost effective too if you haven't looked at those.

yeah you are right i meant the 7808u, just typed in the wrong one.

ive just seen the asus ones on newegg/tigerdirect etc. it doesn't seem like they match up well, pricing wise, with the gateways. if theres a better place to look for them, i'm all ears.(or eyes i guess since im reading)

look at the 7805u compared to a similiarly priced asus 17" .
closest i found the asus is actually 100 bucks more, and you got to downgrade the ddr from ddr3 to 2, downgrade the graphics from a 9800 to a 9650m gt which is a nice bump down. and spend the extra 100 bucks.

even the 7808u for $1800 seems to stack up better against the cheapest asus quad core i could find ($2200, with ddr2 and a worse vid card)

Yea I'd seen those 3 on Newegg but I assumed other resellers carried Asus's $1400-$1800 laptops but after finding those they still aren't as good a deal as those Gateway ones.
