That review is garbage. My problem with those reviews is NOT that they gave ryzom a bad rating. My problem is that the review is written with incorrect facts. The reviewer states "Ryzom was released earlier this year in Europe, so it's surprising that the game is still missing so many promised features."
This is very misleading. The statement makes it sound as if the game was released in Europe months ago, and that like FFXI there was a long period where the game ran before it came to the US. That is not the case. Saga of Ryzom was released in the US on September 22, 2004. It was released in Europe one week earlier. The game has been out of Beta just over one month.
There are other areas where the reviewers opinions are based upon incorrect information. Among them he states that players have such a limited inventory it will effect their ability to sell things. A player has a limit of 300 items. If that is not enough a player can buy a animal to carry an additional amount. He also states that there isn't anything to do but improve player stats and that there is lots of loot that serves no purpose (he complains of the loot all feature being useless). The fact is that there is an entire fame system that deals with those very items. You could get a mission to go get some meat for a tribe. The meat is one of the "useless" items he complains of.

The only bad review that Ryzom got... Gamespot gave 7.9 to Shadowbane. They should hire people who know how to review a MMORPG ...
Two fair reviews released today :
http://pc.gamerfeed.com/gf/reviews/503/
http://www.gamers.com/index.html?run=review&review_id=355
I've heard only good things about this game... I'm just afraid of the unknown! Wish there was a free trial. But being so new, doubt it will come anytime soon.
Also... both those reviews are the... same.
First I was thinking.. "wow, they stole the article title word for word!"... then duh, I realized.
Heh. Good review though.

Just to demonstrate that the review is based on false information here is the news article from gamespots own site about the launch of Ryzom.

I wouldnt be as upset of someone giving the game a bad review as I would of the developers for releasing a buggy unfinished game. Although both articles contained flaws, the one I found the most glaring was the high marks for sounds. SoR has very little sound.
They should of went into more detail about having no NPC vendors for crafters to sell thier wares to other players. In a crafting specific game the only reason why this occurs is because the game was released way to soon and incomplete. ( yeah they claim is coming.. been 6 weeks and still not released)
The could of also mention the whole skill reset because they game mechanics are so flawed and not well though out of. Again point to the fact the the game was released way to early and incomplete. I have never played a game that did a major overhaul 1 month after it was released.
How about the game has so many problems that we are giving everyone an extra week, but it will only occur after we have billed you for next month. I have only been given an extra month from eq when the uunet routers were overloaded and constantly crashing.
They could of also mentioned the insane decay rate on items and how you will have to buy a full set of armor and weapons every other day. But to buy that you would need to have crafter buy enough materials via harvestors or adventures to make them. There was naked tanks that wanted to get armor but the crafters couldnt make it fast enough. To fix this problem the nerf stick is coming out to the harvestor to slow them down, making quality armor even rarer.
Im suprised neither really mention the biggest problem with the game. There is no economy, its not broke it just doesnt exist. There is nothing to do with money in the game. BTW I did play this shell of a game and quit before the free month ended. I had over 10 mil in the first 3 weeks with nothing to buy. There is no incentive for crafters to make items to sell to other players because there is nothing to buy. At low levels you can grind off vendor mats but that doesnt work on levels past 100.
Or how about the bugs like your pack mule is not accessable anymore. Its on the screen and you can target it but when you try to get items out of it the game doesnt recognise it. The crafting bug where you could use q10 mats when making q60 stuff and higher to get reduced q60+ exp instead of q10 exp at 60+. Or the several getting stuck bugs.... and the list could go on.
But how dare someone writes up a review with spun truth or just mis-truths and condems a shell of a game. Whats even worse is to have players say 2/10 of the article was flawed so the whole article is flawed.
The game is a shell of a game and should just be coming out of Alpha. I am tired of playing empty PoS games. I wish there was more critical reviews of games to send a message to game makers that incomplete, buggy games will not be rewarded with praise.
Well it is apparent that even though Desslock mistated some information as fact, there are many bad things about the game that were not even mentioned.

The review is only negative about the game, plus you can see he didnt make it passed mid 20s so around 15 hours of play(not enough to understand an mmorpg) and he didnt even respect the rating on GS. Heres my post from the american forum @ Ryzom and from Ryzom @ GameSpot forum.
If you compare the score obtain by Ryzom to other mmorpgs on Gamespot, you see theres a problem.
The fact that the review was made by another reviewer is, by no mean, an excuse. Heres why :
Exemple : You make exam A with prof Y, and another guy with prof Z got a better score in exam A (the same exam) but had the exact same mistakes you did. Then you complain to the person in charge of your departement and he will revise your exam. This exemple already happened to me when i was in university.
So what im saying is, according to other score obtain by worse mmorpg, Ryzom score needs to be revised.
A reminder of a few score :
Ryzom got 5.6 / 10
Lineage 2 got 6 / 10 L2 is by far the worse mmorpg ive played, they were lots of balancing issus at release and the castle siege came with Chronicle 1 (patch 1...) about a month after release. The grind is the worst ive seen.
AC2 got 8.3 / 10 Ive tryed the free 14 days and i didnt even played all of them.
FFXI got 8.2 / 10 Its widely known that its one of the most over rated mmorpg. The levelling is slow, it always take 100 hours to get a new thing or a new lvl in harvesting/crafting and after lvl 40, you can wait for 2 hours and dont find any groups (no soloing in FFXI) even if your in a guild.
DaoC got 9 / 10 Truly a great game, but compared to ryzom i dont see why its so good and ryzom so bad.
AC got 8.8 / 10 Same as DaoC
EQ got 8.4 10 Fair review, i dont get why is Ryzom so far away.
Shadowbane got 7.9 / 10 whats so great about shadowbane vs Ryzom ?? ive tested it.... nothing new, usual PVP game with a "dark side".
AO got 7.6 / 10 I liked AO, but again why is Ryzom so far away ?
You have the right not to like Ryzom, its all a matter of personnal opinion but some of us think the game as great potential (more then WoW or EQ2) and many reviewer have said so on other gaming sites.
The thing that is really pissing me off about the review is that GS is read by a lot of people. And Ryzom's north american server need some more suscriber, GS is not helping at all here... But they will surely help the big names such as WoW or EQ2.
Final word : Dont say the guy is right, i know the games is not perfect, but thats seeing only one side of it, the bad one. Any new mmorpg would have a low score if it was reviewed only in the first 2 weeks after release.
GS should hire a new guy to write another review after patch 1.
PS for NEAS (who had already said he hated the game on a previous post) Why do you post on the Ryzom board if you didnt like the game.... get a life you little WoW Fanboi... OH And why is there no "currently playing" and "have played" in your sign... Looks like "I dont want to pay so i play beta only, and i'm new to the world of mmorpg but i think i know everything... Im so COOOL with my 365 posts on mmorpg.com...." again get a life.
Writing an MMORPG review after such limited play time is pretty pointless. I guess they do it in the rush to release content for there website that is current and fresh...and Ryzom is relatively new. But its typical gamespot, and typical of most big sites...They all have absolutely no idea about MMORPG's, ive seen it many many times...they should stick to consoles
And whats this

?, thats a joke right.....where is this guy playing from...Pluto?
Desslock always writes crappy reviews!
Ryzom is different from other games, and still many new features aren't in the game yet and still its fun!
Hmm (mud)pie IV..... ! :-)
scientology
The fact that there are many new features not yet implemented is exactly why I don't play ryzom. I was in the last beta before open, then the focus beta, and in the new round of open beta. Throughout those stages, not much has changed. They got all the races and things in, but they were already in since long before the first open beta. There's still lag, there's still bugs that make the game unplayable. Mounts? Oh yeah! There still being tested by GMs... After launch... A waste of money.
At the very least I recommend waiting a few months to see if they actually fix things and add the features they promised a year ago before wasting any money on them.
In the Gamespot review, Desslock makes points that are pretty much accurate, although he does overstate some things and there some things that are just plain false. To make a longstory short (if you don't want to keep reading this post) I think he didn't get too far into Saga of Ryzom to fairly and accurately write a review.
I think the main message of the review is that the game is not finished and it is just not that good the way it is. After playing for a few weeks now, even though I do like Ryzom, I can't help but agree.
I am finding Ryzom to be a huge grind. maybe it's because I spent a while in the newbie Island working on a Matis character only to switch to a Tryker, but either way you look at it, you must spend time grinding in the newbie zone before really seeing the game on the mainland.
Little things mentioned in the review like unnecessary resources, simple animations, not much character customization, etc. add up. I thought there would be a lot more customization. I thought that the races would have some differentiating attributes, although, it does state we may see this soon.
I still log in and have fun playing, but usually not for very long periods of time. I always look forward to gaining more levels so I can get on with the core gameplay on the mainland, hopeing it will be much better, but right now I don't think it is all that great.
So I think Desslock wrote this review after playing pretty much like I have, ONLY IN THE NEWBIE ISLAND! I know there is a lot more to SoR, I just am having a hard time getting there. But to write a review without experiencing most, if not all, of what the game has to offer it bordering on criminal.

GameSpot know what is doing better than any other site Ryzom deserves less than a 5. Sucha boring game. Just wait for Tabula Rasa :P
Tabula Risa is similar to Guild War but with a sci-fi background.
All of my mmorpg player friends including me, are not a big fan of Guild War and Tabula Risa. Its more of a Diablo then a mmorpg.

When a country like France decides not to support the coalition, we (USians, im not using Americans because people from America are American) renames French Fries and empties bottles of red in the sink! It takes a supra-intelligent brain to think of that...

I'm one of those guys who was very optimistic about Ryzom that I even pre-ordered it. I was very disappointed when I saw nothing had changed on release, I was hoping just for minor additions/modifications but no, Ryzom was still the same it was in beta.
I went on having high hopes in regards of Ryzom. I thought Ryzom could become just THE MMORPG for me. But I got disappointed once more. It quickly turned me off, the lack of content/quests/etc and the constant grind for just another level. After only two months I canceled my subscription, the shortest time span I ever spent on a MMORPG.
I might give Ryzom another go in about 6+ months when all the promised features have been added.
By the way, the Gamespot review could have been written by me, nothing I could disagree with.
I must agree with Naitakal above. Though the Gamespot review is harsh and somewhat one sided - most of the points seem to me to be true.
I must also agree with Morax and Tymora about the grind and total lack of a player economy. The game has a lot of promise, with some very innovative ideas - but that potential still hasn't been reached.
Some things are great though: events and customer support. Also, character customisation had more degrees of freedom than I've seen in most other games...
Gamespot review is biased and full of lies... thats a fact.
SoR already as more content then the 9 month i played in FFXI. Can you name 1 game with events on the first 2 months.. and dont say you didnt participate it would only prove that its not your kind of game and its all personnal opinion. But theres is no need to say you dont like the game.
Grinding is only for those who want to lvl only. I play to have fun, I participated in 2 events and im playing with my guild. I dont care what lvl i am as long as I can have fun and participate in the events.
With patch 2 the only "content" WoW will have and SoR wont is Group Raid but we have Invasion. Patch will be out in less then a month and theres enough things to do to have fun while waiting.
Personally i couldnt care less about economy. I dont see how economy can be fun in a game...
And WoW and EQ2 also have "issus"....
Now go ahead and say im a Fanboi for defending a game i like on the forum of a game i like... Anyway im proud of being a SoR fanboy. We need fanboy to ballance the effect of the trollboy.
Events are fine, its the basic content most people are bothered about. The stuff you do when events aren't on.
Grinding gets boring over time if theres nothing else to do. I know EQ2 and WOW have problems but people dont mind about problems its the lack of content which is the major kill point for ryzom.
The rubber banding, the lack of 3d space, the small size of the world... all of the minimalistic points people make when leaving the game WOULDN'T matter if there was content. Otherwise the game starts to feel like a job than an actual game.
It just takes people longer than others to get tired of it thats all. There was another review about SoR which pretty much is 95% correct. Its all about content you cant have a game without the actual Game story in there..., Yea i know you got events, and storys on websites and the racial divides and history etc but generally it needs alot of spit and polish.
Here is klinky to review:

i have never seen a game with more boring combat
some attacks are overpowered..but 80% of them are useless..they do nothing
and one patch dont does wonder
NAH YOU STOP THAT BS
First to every one reading this : Crock loved GW and WoW.... talk about boring click fest, the kills are only faster.
How could fighter be useless in a group PvP battle ???? LMAO I see too groups, one with nukers only and another one with fighters only... the figters would win.
The game is still being ballanced for PvP and group PvP however the other feature are working well and PvE combat is completly fixed.
And none of the attack are useless... In my guild each fighter have a different set of skills and believe me they are all usefull...
Crock : when did you play for the last time ? what do you about the game after 25, YEAH 25, patches.
Crock dont know what he's talking about...
Whats your experience with mmorpg crock ?
