EQ2 vs Eve Online

During the long buildup to the release of World of Warcraft and Everquest 2 there was a lot of speculation as to which game would be better.

Now that the dust is beginning to settle and World of Warcraft has quite clearly won that battle, it's interesting to see that Eve Online is now rated higher than Everquest 2 on the main page.

Is this anything to do with the new Eve expansion? Does it add much to the game? Also will there be a free trial? I wasn't taken by the game when I trialled it last year although I thought it had promise and potential, and the graphics were excellent.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The rating system is scewed and flawed.  There is no competition between Eve and EQ2 as they are 2 totally different types of games.  The only reason that Eve is higher is because the people who play rate it, while on EQ2 its the people who do not play who rate it saying 'This game sucks, go to WoW'.  They should in my opinion just remove the game ratings totally because they will always be crippled by some 'fanboys' who stick 1's everywhere for a game they do not play for whatever reasons they give.

same goes for WoW so, if you pull up that theory all games are screwed. And the more fanboys the one game has the more screwed are the others. So the rating is just stabilizing itself. But indeed at the rating is less accurate, but you can see wich games are loved most :P

Well imho EvE is the front runner here but i also think SWG is a superior game to EQ2 and Wow.Any game that is NOT a "fantasy"game is better than EQ2 or WoW.
Ive played both EQ2 and WoW.These 2 games offer NOTHING new. They are both overrated and underproduced games.I hate that companies just churn out the same old bag of tricks and all we here about is the "cutting edge graphics engine"or how about the "new and improved questing system".

At least with EvE CCP actually produces what they say they will.

EQ2 and WoW have recycled the same concepts and ideas from 5 years ago.Name one thing in either game that hasnt been done before.

I can name one thing in EvE that no other game has tried:offline skill training.

They are two completely different games. They are also two great games. Conclusion: Try them both.

No, neither game is "better" than the other. EQ2 has a different prime target market than WoW. And WoW has a different prime target market than EQ2. Both games are not directly compeating vs each other.

Any who post and think one game MUST be better than the other, or that one must succeed and the other fail, are missinformed, and have not studied who the main audiance for EQ2 and WoW are.

Now that the dust is beginning to settle and World of Warcraft has quite clearly won that battle,

      1. The "dust will settle" 1 year from now. It takes 1 year for a MMORPG to get past its growing pains. If WoW and/or EQ2 are still around 1 year from now, and each one has 50k to 100k subscribers, then they both will be on their way to recouping all money invested into them.

      2. WoW is NOT battling vs EQ2. WoW is battling vs its own moneymen.    WoW must get, keep, and maintain at least 100,000 subscribers non-stop for a minimum of 1 year just to break even. Then it will start turning a true profit. If WoW survives for 5 years, then it will have fullfilled the intended shelf life of a MMORPG. Thus WoW has not won any battles yet. It's battle is just starting.

Same with EQ2. EQ2 is battling its own moneymen. EQ2 must get, keep, and maintain at least 100,000 subscribers non-stop for a minimum of 1 year just to break even. Then again, EQ2 has the added benefit of an extra bonus. It's parent company can rely on the profits from EQ to help support EQ2 ... IF ... EQ2 were to sink below 100k accounts. Thus even if EQ2 were to have only 50,000 accounts it would still be a success.

It does not matter if WoW has 500k accounts if it has trouble making back the money Blizzard invested into making it. It does not matter if EQ has 50k accounts if it easily makes back the money SONY invested into making it.

BTW, guess what? B-O-T-H EQ2 and WoW are on track to being successful. Yes B-O-T-H. Now stop the sillyness about them battling each other and only one must win. Here is another wrench for the silly "WoW vs EQ2 only 1 can win, only 1 can succeed" posts... many gamers play more than one MMORPG. image Including playing BOTH EQ2 and WoW. image

it's interesting to see that Eve Online is now rated higher than Everquest 2 on the main page.

Yes? And? So? MMORPG.com is a gamer site. There are roughly 5,000 posters. And maybe roughly 15,000 who posted at least 5 times. And roughly 20,000 lurkers. Still a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of thousands who play EQ2, WoW, and the tons of other MMORPGs already out.

Is this anything to do with the new Eve expansion? Does it add much to the game? Also will there be a free trial? I wasn't taken by the game when I trialled it last year although I thought it had promise and potential, and the graphics were excellent.

The fact that you are asking if EvE has a free trial shows you have not been keeping up on things. image

EvE has had a free trial for the past months and months. MMORPG.com itself was advertising all over its site a promo for the free EvE trial. There may still be some free accounts left.

Last, EQ2 is not fighting against EvE. They are 1 million percent different games. BOTH are successful. Both have their own, different, target markets. The best way to see if you like a game is to NOT go by what a gamer site says, or by popularity lists and charts. Play the game yourself. And since EvE still has some free trial accounts left - nice chance for you to personally play EvE and see for yourself if you like it.... or not - and then choose from the 10+ other MMORPGs on the left side menu. imageimage
