Battlegrounds, what do you remember?

Does anyone remember how the old PVP battlegrounds worked before they were shut down?

Please try and go into as elaborate detailing as possible. If you have screenshots, that'd be awesome!

thank you

I remember they sucked and noone used them. They were just a big nothing basically which speaks volumes about how much effort SOE put into the little content they gave the game.

The battlegrounds idea never matured in SWG.  The game came out in Summer 2003 and I joined in Feb 2004.  By the time I joined, the battlegrounds were all "roped off" and inaccessable.  So I never got the chance to see them.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." What I remember about the battleground on tat was that you had enemy base inside .

You had 1h to complete the battle solo or in group .To win you destroyed the 4 generators inside the base . With the faction points you owned you could buy turrets , walls or reinforcements .

Once the battle completed or failed the next one started 15min later .

Imo with a little more work fixing some bugs inside it was a good concept .

The battlegrounds were roped off by some sort of invisible wall system.  Large pillars formed a circle around the area and anyone crossing over the invisible wall was flagged pvp and teleported to the start area for their team.  There was some condition that would not allow players to zone in.  It might have been when the battle was resetting, but I don't recall.  Basically the whole area was instanced, but not instanced at the same time.

Once inside there were objectives.  As benji pointed out there were generators that needed to be destroyed.  I recall there being destrucatable walls you could blow through to get into the little base.  There was a time limit on the battles and 1 hour sounds familiar, but I don't recall.  What I do remember was that I could solo one in just under the time limit.

I think there were 3.  One in tatooine, one on naboo and one on talus I think.

For whatever reason, soe decided to remove them from the game not to long after release.  They worked so I don't recall why they did it, but that just seems to be their answer on how to run this game.  They were never really popular, but in a game built on strong community efforts, I think these would have servers as a great tool for player run battles.

The real Battleground was between Bestine and Anchorhead.

Yea, I remember the battles between Anchorhead and Bestine.

Didn't Anchorhead become a ghosttown after instant shuttle transportation?  I always thought that instant transportation from planet to planet and place to place was a mistake.  Space was always empty because of instant transportation and the whole game morphed into a "get there quick" mindset.

The game was already dead at this time...

I still remember the back and forth battles for AH and Bestine.  Fighting could occur anywhere in those 2 towns, including the bee-line route between them as both sides ran into each other in the dunes of Tatooine (intentional or not).

As far as space goes, it's the only ok thing left in SWG.  But there are still faults with it, IMO, especially if the devs supposedly drew inspiration from the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter games done by Totally Games.

Warships were extremely rare, no fleet engagements (would tax the system).  Another problem I had was the overpoweredness of later introduced craft, namely the Actis Interceptor and it's other ilk.  There was no true presence of the navies of the Empire and Rebellion.  The best you could hope for was seeing something like a Lambda Shuttle.  And not enough players in space.

How I remember it speaking to the community most people said that if JTLS sucks then they'll leave because they've given SOE enough chances to make the game good and add in content. Everyone was really down on the lack of content in the game and most people were bored because all there was to do was stand around in towns and duel, which is ok but you can't do it all the time. Also people were down on all the bugs that have been in the game since beta and the profession balance.

People were just fedup of the game and JTLS was their only hope lol. When it came out people were pissed off cause not only did it ruint he ground game even more, space wasn't what they wanted and it was just shit.

Alot of people I know quit after JTLS and only came back to see what the CU was about and I was one of those people but I originally quit before that too cause Jeedai were ruining the game and the whole holocron economy thing.

I myself liked the CU but what I hated about it was levels that only counted combat professions, I prefered the new damage could only be done to Health because the old HAM bar system was broken and everyone just attacked mind.

I believe they were turned off when I started the game (Nov 03) which is sad.

There were more of those rings on other worlds. Corellia had one somewhere east of Kor Vella. Dathomir's with a little south and east of the Village. Either Yavin or Endor had one in the northwest quadrant.
