Yeah I will try the game out because I am tired of themepark MMORPGs. However after playing FPS games using melee weapons with forced 1 person view I know I wont like it. It may work if you use a grenade launcher or casting a spell (might even work better than 3rd person view) but for melee weapons it was very hard to see what is going on. For that to work the monitor need to have a close to 180 degrees angle both vertically and horizontally (as in RL) and it does not have that, not even half of that. As for the dev not going to change that. Well it is their perogative, however they WILL lose alot of customers because of it because it has been shown many times that the majority of MMORPGs does not enjoy that, not even AC Darktide had that. And that might not matter to you guys but it should matter to the devs since they say they have limited resources (=limited funds).
Well all I can say is that there are many people who greatly enjoy FPV games and don't feel bothered by the few shortcomings that it has due to the limitations of technology. That's really all there is to it, some like it, others will not. The devs have decided to cater to the people who do like it.
As for loosing customers because of the game being FPV, I'd say they are not too worried about it. There are a lot of gamers out there who have no problem with playing FPV games.
I agree, Full looting was very common back in the MUD days and it worked very well. You were scared shit-less of dying but in the end it was all worth it for the immersionfactor
young gamers of today are used to death not having consequences.
Most modern games, not just MMO's, have extremely lenient death penalties. I recently finished playing bioshock, and dying in that game meant absolutely nothing, for example. You didn't even lose your current progress
That monster actually picked a player up and held him in its hand. And those minotaurs! Combat looks quite interactive.
Yeah! There are bound to be quite some "ohshitohshitohshit!!" moments when playing MO.
Add to that the fact that unique or boss monster can be controlled by GM's and you've got a nice recipe for exciting "PVE" (or PVGM actually). I think GM's of other games would be quite jealous on the MO ones; at least they occasionaly get to wipe annoying players, hehe.
The world doesn't sound that large, but it will FEEL very big. Why? Because of the map system.
Believe me..anyone who's played old EQ will attest to the fact that when you don't have a minimap showing you all the terrain around you or your current location, or any world maps with a little marker on it showing where you are and how fast you're moving, the world will feel a lot bigger.
When travelling in most MMO's I tend to spend half my time glancing at a map to check my exact progress without paying much attention to my surroundings, since I don't need them to navigate. I'm sure most others are the same way. I do remember though that before we had all these little gimmicks, travelling the world, even a smaller one, felt a lot more vast since you really had to pay attention to what was around you, and you could get lost, and unless you were familiar with an area you could never really say "Well, I'll be there in exactly 2 minutes according to my map" or "The map shows I'm just about there, directly north of you."
First, name me one successful MMO TODAY that has full looting. Don't pull out that MUD bs. This is 2009, not 1992. your average player(and no one posting around here is average) likes the current model of limited conseuences for dying, because their idea of fun is not the UO model. If Mortal Online wants to use this, fine. there may be some who like to play this way. Don't for a second think, however, that it will break 100k using this.
Second, FPS works in ranged combat. It sucks in melee. Keep whipping out Oblivion till the cows come home. Lemme check my MMORPG index...hmmmm...nope. No Oblivion on there. Last I checked this was an MMO site. Not an FPS or RPG site, but MMOrpg. As was said before, you need 180 degree perception, which isn't going to happen without VR goggles, three screens or a concave screen. Otherwise, you are running around like one of those horses with blinders on. gg.
The game visually looks good, and the options are nice, but those two things are limiting its access to casual gamers. You do that, you are cutting the legs out from under you. Look at how well DF is doing with that model.
A couple of comments. Careful, the power of logic is about to destroy you.. I can hear the pitter-patter of troll beaters incoming.. First, name me one successful MMO TODAY that has full looting. Name me how many full loot MMO's have been released in the past 10 years. Don't pull out that MUD bs. This is 2009, not 1992. your average player(and no one posting around here is average) likes the current model of limited conseuences for dying, because their idea of fun is not the UO model. How many current gamers have played Ultima Online? I'll be generous and say 10% If Mortal Online wants to use this, fine. there may be some who like to play this way. Don't for a second think, however, that it will break 100k using this. Ultima Online broke 100k 15 years ago. You really think with the infusion of gamers over the past 15 years, that Mortal Online couldn't break that relatively weak standard? Second, FPS works in ranged combat. It sucks in melee. Seemed to work in Elder Scrolls : Oblvion just fine.Keep whipping out Oblivion till the cows come home. I will, and considering I don't own cows, it seems I'll be doing it for a long time. Lemme check my MMORPG index...hmmmm...nope. No Oblivion on there. Last I checked this was an MMO site. Not an FPS or RPG site, but MMOrpg. It would be a moot point if it weren't for Mortal Online having a carbon copy combat system of Oblivion. As was said before, you need 180 degree perception, which isn't going to happen without VR goggles, three screens or a concave screen. Otherwise, you are running around like one of those horses with blinders on. gg. Need? Everquest didn't NEED 180 degree FOD. That game worked out pretty well didn't it? The game visually looks good, and the options are nice, but those two things are limiting its access to casual gamers. You do that, you are cutting the legs out from under you. Look at how well DF is doing with that model. Have you seen the new powerpoint presentation? It was clearly stated that the game is geared to a more mature and hardcore audience. They are doing what they want for the gamers that want it. You don't want it? Go play WoW. I hear they could use another subscriber.
If you knew anything about Darkfall, it's not the game that is the problem, it's the marketing.

Eve Online, has approx. 300,000 subscribers, and when you die, you lose everything. It can't all be "looted" since the ship and about 50% of the stuff on it is simply desrtoyed, but the guy who got blown up loses it all just as assuredly as if he'd been looted fully. And it's still gradually growing. It's the only MMO aside from WoW that has been growing in subscribers since day 1, and the game is near 6 years old.
I just wanted to say one thing. Just my 2 cents.
I agree. I think this is just one of the many features of MO that will make it a great game.
It's about immersion. They're trying to create a life-like MMORPG. Full loot works to this end. As does the first person view. Some people may not like these features, but they are essential to this style of game, and you can never please everybody.
Full loot hasn't even got a remote chance in the last few generations of fantasy mmorpgs and I don't consider DF a fully released game yet. Besides, you can be revolutionary in one aspect and botch up other essential sides to a game. Sadly it looks like DF has some issues in that regard..
Eve is a game that has been running for years and can pride itself on being amongst the most successful mmorpg's out there considering it's trusty playerbase of 300k and the time it is running. One of it's strong points happens to be pvp with harsh consequences ...
MO is being developed for the likes of us that are sick and tired of the lack of excitement in pvp by the mere fact that death is a joke in most new releases. A few seconds of gametime lost, ... a minor debuff you can get rid of for a copper and a dime, ... games where people jump of cliffs to suicide-teleport to the nearest town to save traveling time, etc.
If done right, with enough reasons for someone to seriously consider whether ganking someone is a smart idea or not, full loot works wonders in bringing true excitement to pvp.
Oh, and not being allowed to use Oblivion as an example is the biggest load of cr*p I've read in a long time. Saying in advance how first person will deter you from playing this game is a personal decision but not a well founded one. You have to actually try the game for that and see how it pans out.
MO will be a niche game and some people wont like its formula, but the developers won't water their concept down to attract a broader playerbase and with that being yet another "jack of all trades and master in none" release. If done right, I bet that will reward them with quite a bigger niche than you expect.
Woah! If this doesn't look and sound like a new Darkfall, I don't know what does. Besides the first-person view, and the fact that they MO is saying THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES ABOUT FEATURES WE JUST WANT THIS STUFF TO BE IN..
----------------------------- Real as Reality Television!!!
I suspect that MO will be THE mmo spirtual incarnation of Oblivion, at least until Bethsada finishes theirs. That said, this should appeal less to the Halo crowd, in that death does actually mean something. However it will still have it's "ipwnu" gankers, who will be drawn by the full loot system.
I would say, though, a good way to counteract this is that the GMs will be taking a far more active role it seems, than in previous games (PVGM). "Bosses" need not just be a huge dragon (like in the cinematic), but could also be a very decked out average joe. I wonder then what they might do to the typical ganker, should they see a really "off" name, and know that person to have such a reputation... Losing your gear to another player is one thing, but having it swiped by a GM is another
I am also hoping that if our mounts aren't pocketed, and there are no global type auction houses- if there are going to be sufficient saddlebags? Perhaps special types for special types of mounts? I am envisioning caravans of merchants...
Basically aside from having VR compatability, this might be the closest thing to realistic sword and sorcery, in an ancient mythos, that we have yet seen. With all the features already touched on, it is bound to become one hell of a social experiment at the least, and a full on study of similiarities of ancient societies at best! <insert Sparta jokes here>
Psst. Adventurine, this is what a real indy dev company can do with a game- take notes...
Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW -- -- "Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Double Fine President Tim Schafer said. "Oh great, now Beyonce is going to sue me too."

ACCEPT that Starvault is promising nothing until they absolutely know it can deliver. AND they aren't trying to say they are Prometheus here to give us mere mortals Fire. No, what they ARE saying is... "if you like our concept, go ahead and give us a try. If you don't think it's what you like, then no problems. Hope you enjoy your other game." They know they are going to start with limited subs, because of its highly niche aspect. However, they are following CCP's example in making sure the game speaks for itself. Once you get that, you get a fanbase that will reward you, again... like CCP's.
None of these aspects were ever done with Adventurine, so comparing the two like that, is actually an insult to Starvault.

I made a threa don officials about player shops being a middle ground instead of auction house. so I'm chuffed, hopefully trading wont consist of spam chat like in darkfall.

If I remember right the new powerpoint said you can build addons to your house to turn it into a shop, so this should be in.

Yup thats why I'm chuffed (happy).
MO sounds like its going to be best mmo evar! I don't think it will come out in 2009, but I dont want it to really. rather they perfect the game but in concept its perfect. can always play a imperfect MO until the real MO comes out (its called darkfalll)

I'd rather play as soon as possible. Once the core features are working, sign me up. I've been waiting since I left Ultima Online some.. 8 years ago for something to give me that same experience. I'm tired of waiting.. lol

What spam chat ? There won't be global chat window. Only local chat. You can find enough info about chat system used in MO on official forum.

Don't forget that they are going to release core product - tested, unbugged as much as possible, tweaked to balance everything possible. Rest under below quote.

Core features such as close combat, looting, housing and basic things like trading - generally interaction between objects etc. were implemented in alpha client half year ago. They do not need to focus on fluff , as this is going to be added later - as well as new content (like additional continents, bosses etc.) No need to have a feature allowing the player see his fame points, as nobody cares about such statistic since beginning. Despite this it's better to spend the time on making basic things 100% working before release. This leads me to think, that release in summer 2009 has high chances to come true.
ps. too fking much defeatism around MO. Have some faith.

Yeah caught up on some matts quotes and seems like they'd like to take more time, but they are under pressure to release soon so they can get some money to continue development. so lets hope the core is very good, since alot of the game will be missing. aslong as they don't do a staged release like darkfall...

Let's hope they dont. The LOTRO approach to get the mechanics working and then add content as fast as you can is a lot better than releasing a really buggy game with as much content as possible online.

Actually, that highlighted part is a bit of an oxymoron these days, is it not? It looks to me like you get what's in DF. The whole "zomg fu**in pwnd you noob" crowd seems to flock to this type of playstyle. Seems to anyway.
Currently in another mmoshooter beta so won't be trying to get into this one but those that do make sure you do your best.
I have 1 question however, is there any further information on where houses can be built? Is it restricted or are we talking an SWG affair, it didn't say anything about houses being destroyable and seemed to infer that is will be a safe place (not sure how exploitable that could be). I really like the ideas they have (esp 1st person only) and love the idea of being able to build anywhere but I think there would have to be some form of limitationfor obvious reasons.
Sorry if the answers are easily out there but like I said I'm putting all my effforts and playtime into another game atm.

In the pp pres they did mention that the world will still be a tad empty in the beginning and that this will change when players start building their houses. Which does hint at being free to build out in the world rather than housing instances such as in Lotro.
But we don't know for sure, I suppose. Also it stated that you don't want to lose your key ... it would be very nasty to get ganked and have the key to your house stolen and all your possesions in your house as well. I hope keys won't have tooltips with the location of the house in question. That way a potential burgler would potentially have to search for the right house for a long time (unless he knows where you live or killed you on your porch :P)
I also wonder if having your key get stolen will just plainly transfer ownership of the house and it's contents. But I think that is unlikely. Your village members wouldn't want to put up with a murdering squater in their midst in a realistic setting, I guess.

Aye,
As in real life, I hope if you loose your key, you can run home and pay someone to change the locks *for a price*. Then the key would be worthless.

With all the features already touched on, it is bound to become one hell of a social experiment at the least, and a full on study of similiarities of ancient societies at best! <insert Sparta jokes here>
Psst. Adventurine, this is what a real indy dev company can do with a game- take notes...

"Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Double Fine President Tim Schafer said.

My blog:

I'm tired of waiting.. lol

My blog:
Let's hope they dont. The LOTRO approach to get the mechanics working and then add content as fast as you can is a lot better than releasing a really buggy game with as much content as possible online.
Actually, that highlighted part is a bit of an oxymoron these days, is it not? It looks to me like you get what's in DF. The whole "zomg fu**in pwnd you noob" crowd seems to flock to this type of playstyle. Seems to anyway.

The pp presentation was good.

The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
My brand new bloggity blog.

Aye,
As in real life, I hope if you loose your key, you can run home and pay someone to change the locks *for a price*. Then the key would be worthless.
