This started 2 days ago after I restarted from a windows update. My PC would randomly restart (says it does it improperly) and then it will go to the select user screen and it would restart again without warning. I even tried going to safe mode without networking and it would restart as soon as safe mode admin was booting up. At night my monitor is off and I can hear my pc restarting over and over and over when it hits the select user.
I tried to do virus scans when I do get the PC back to my account and it would restart during a virus scan. I'm sure I don't have a virus, but I don't know what's going on. Can anybody help me out? I came home just a while ago and it already was wating at the user screen. It's going fine but I know it's gonna restart again sometime.

ya man that could be a lot of things. Sounds like you got a piece of hardware going out on you somewhere. Maybe start in the bios and check log files. Some bios record hardware faults. Also check the PC health in bios and look for anything out of the ordinary.
I would say your CPU is going out on you, but usually your PC shuts completely down and doesnt restart.

This happened to me on my old machine. Turns out the motherboard was shot.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.
Is you cpu fan running or plugged. I had the same thing happen years ago and the cpu was shot because fan was plugged with dust.
So you think I can still save the CPU? I'm sure i can still clean my fan.

Like people are saying, this can be any number of things.
Don't run out your hard disks. If I had to guess I'd check that first. Just my own personal experiences with random start issues.
First thing that comes to mind is have you checked your battery on the motherboard? if not try to replace it with a new one and see how that might work out for you. (little past experiance for me in the past)
Also have you tried unplugging all components, clean them up and put it back together?
Also have you tried, if it is even possible to get to a back-up state of your pc to a moment you didn't have this problem to use system restore?
7 gigss are left on here nad this pc runs pretty slow. It's very very old now though....i guess i could clean it. would it help?

If it's old you might try my suggestion and replace that battery as I just said.
Here's a simple diagnostic tip.
When you start up the PC, go into your bios screen and see if you can get a temp reading anywhere. If not- no big deal. Let the comp sit at the bios screen for several minutes. If it runs stable while poking around bios- the problem is most likely your windows installation and/or virus. If it randomly reboots in bios, it is a hardware problem.
You can also try opening up task mananger immediately and ending all non-system processes.
Either way your pry looking at a new windows install because I had something similar once caused by malware and the problem was so extensive and little known that I was better off backing up what I could and reinstalling. Took less time.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.
9.5.10
in wxp, safe mode start, run msconfig, examine the start-up tab, there there can be malware checked that forces a system restart.
also does reverting to a saved successful start a few days before this forced reboot solve the problem?
I havent done setting it back to a restore point yet, but I will tonight when I come home yet. I thought my computer turned itself on, but i think it's just me trippin.

Remember it might still be a software issue. I've had a random reboot(not BSoD) which would occur every 14th day. After monitoring shit and debugging, I finally just reinstalled my computer and it hasn't restarted since.
What I'm saying it you can do the usual hardware debugging with temps meassing and removing all unnecessary hardware(sound cards and so on), but before you deem your computer useless, it's worth trying to reinstall it.
I agree. It is good to have a reinstall. Gets rid of all the garbage and computer runs like new. I had to a reinstal on this computer for the 1st time and it is several years old. Now it runs great. I think I got a virus since my virus program would not connect for update. Seems so I was just reading about a new virus that does that.
As gonglocken says, sititing on the BIOS screen should tell you if it is hardware problem. If it is convienient, I would open up case and see if the fan is turning. (my gaming computer has see through sides so I can just look in)
