How Is Aion?

I have a question for those of you that are lucky enough to already be playing.  How is Aion?  How high would you rank it on your top MMOs ever played list.

     Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than expected....

    Top marks for

    1) GAME ENGINE - Cryengine FTW (one of the greatest inventions in gaming)

    2) Artwork.

    3) Music (depends on personal flavours...but majority feel its good)

    4) Combat animations..

    5) Flight combats (gives a whole new learning curve to PvP)

    6) Good Lore foundation (Very appealing storyline..which they can easily improve on..overtime

    7) Execution (Not unique...but...the story and the whole world is well introduced to the player)

In comparison to other MMOs...I'd easily rate it among the top 5.....which can easily get to the top 2 (if NCsoft use their head and bring out good stuff)

Crytek is a software development company focused on 3D game technologies. A modified version of the CryENGINE, developed by Crytek, is being used by NCsoft to make AION: The Tower of Eternity.

Crysis runs on a 2x release of the engine, Aion is a heavily modified 1x release of the engine. Farcry was built from the 1x CryEngine. Still the same engine, just a newer release. Always mass confusion concerning this, eheh. Crytek Engine = CryENGINE. Crytek are the creators.

I am playing the Chinese version currently with the english patch. I honesltly find AION to be the greatest new MMO to launch in many years. I have been playing MMOs since EQ back when I was 18 and I am now 28 and have played a plethora of MMOs.

It is hard for me to rate just yet, however if you enjoy theme park MMOs, then AION is a game you can not pass up.

Aion does nothing new really, however it takes all the stuff people enjoy from other MMOs and games and then raises the bar and gives us an amazing degree of polish.

I was wary at first and did not want to keep wondering if Aion would be worth waiting for, hence why I decided to try the Chinese version. I was hooked instantly and while I want to keep my playtime limited as to not spoil much for the NA launch, I find it hard to stop playing!

So yea, anyone wondering if AION is worth the hype, it is. Like I said, I have played a lot of MMOs and for many many years and AION is the greatest MMO to launch since WoW.

I plan to write a more in depth review once I get a bit deeper into the game. ^^

Aion does in fact use Cryengine.  Cryengine 2 is the one used in Crysis.

Back when I 1st heard of Aion and saw NCsoft was making it, I was like "ugh, look another pretty looking asia grinder by NCsoft."

Boy was I wrong for thinking that, but hey their track record it's that great, heh.

It was not what I was expecting an all...

it's quest based (some people call this thempark... I hate the term, myself)

Missions you have to do to progress your character, as it is how you pick your sub-class, get your wings, etc... May change in the latter part of the game, that I'm not sure of.

Regular quests are optional... but net you xp, money, and items.

    Crafting nets XP...

The combat is pretty normal for an mmo, with it own twist, tho.

Death, hurts but isn't overly harsh.

you lose 3 to 5% of your xp on death, and you get a debuff that reduces xp gain. You can "buy" back some of that lost xp... this also removes the debuff.

If you don't like WoW, then you may not like Aion... but you still might.

    They play kinda the same...

I see Aion as a hybrid mix of WoW and Lineage 2.

There are only three reasons for my hate towards WoW:

    • The PvP was almost an afterthought
    • In some places there are huge grinds and boring quests
    • All the best content is reserved for the level 60+ characters

    *EDIT* Added third reason.

I agree. It's a nice mix of the two.

Well, if you hate WoW as in gameplay and mechanics rather then lore and art direction, then you will not like Aion.

Wow took great mmo elements and polished them to a new level and became a great theme park mmo. Aion has done the same thing, it took all the great elements, polished them even further and created an even greater theme park mmo.

Personally I began my MMO gaming with EQ which I played for many years, I played WoW for many years and most big titles mmos during the course of it all. So I enjoy the theme park style of MMO and this is why I say Aion is the greatest new mmo to come out in years.

Now if you dislike theme park gameplay, stay clear of Aion and wait for a sandbox mmo of even look into mmo sub generes.

Edit: Saw your reasons you listed

    1) I have not done PvP in Aion as of yet but that is a big difference between Aion and WoW. WoW is a PvE focused game that offers PvP. Aion is a PvPvE game, I have heard people comment that the Abyss gameplay reminds them of old DaOC. Im sure some higher level english speakers can add to this.

    2) It is a MMO, so there will be some quests that you may find boring and some grind. So far I have not had to grind but the game is fully quest based like most theme park style MMOs. Which in the end is a more creative and enjoyable way to mask the grind of gaining xp to lvl up and get new skills and shinies. I enjoy the quests and as far as quests go Aion has them well written.

I mean when I look at other games of the genre, many of them have terribly boring and poorly written quests. I was recently trying the WAR trial to see if the game has gotten better and the quest text in that game is about as vanilla and cardboard as possible. Aion I find that I do not just skip the text but I read it, all of it and enjoy it a great deal.

Aion also has cut scenes which if you played FFXI may not be new to you, I think LOTRO has these as well? Adds a nice touch and adds to immersion and story.

    3) Contest has been enjoyable for me at a lower level, though like all games of this type, end game is where you will be fighting over keeps, raiding, get better flight options and so on. The carrot on a stick method. I will say that AION has a juicy carrot that really helps you want to keep pushing forward. To give perspective, in WAR and AoC I felt little drive to advance my character and it got old quick. In EQ, WoW and even EQ2 I felt a greater desire to level and see that next thing around the corner. Aion does this as well and is addictive because of it.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for your answer.  That pretty much makes Aion a 'must buy' for me, becasue I don't hate theme park MMOs, (although I do like sandboxs better), it's just those three features that I hate about WoW.  And for my last reason, what I meant was there were no arenas and all of the BGs were bad at the lower levels.  So what I was trying to ask was is there good PvP and enjoyable quests in Aion from the beginning?

Pvp starts around lvl20 and hits you full on at lvl25 via the abyss. The games main focus is pvp so if you don't like that aspect of a game you may want to steer clear.

Doing some of the quest will grant you titles.  There are a total of 50 titles you can get.  If you open your char screen and click on the title tab you can view and change your current title (each title will give you extra stats to HP,MP, Crit, Speed and so on) you can only select one title at a time.

Cool, and by the way, PvP is my favorite part of MMOs if it is done right. And I have one more question. What is the level cap?

Hopefully by the time in comes out in NA/EU all the bugs will be ironed out and all of the missing content will be added. (Not that there are any bugs or missing content, it's just that every other MMO has had those two problems at release.)

Wouldn't expect anything but the same launch content Koreans had, maybe the bug fixes, but not the content adds.

Slightly off topic but... since we're on the subject of Crytek engines.  This game is made using the Crytek2 engine...

Funny what a memory hog that engine is, too many polys!!!  In the video clip you can see animation lag on their own dev machines.  Still I'm excited about this one, but I'm sure it's years away from release.

  • chrisrobhay2chrisrobhay2 Member Posts: 114

No, Aion was made using a heavily modified version of Cryengine 1.  That was the engine used in the original Far Cry.  Cryengine 2 is the one used in Crysis.

*EDIT* Oh, you were talking about Forged By Chaos.  Nevermind.

Aion is very fun.  Good combat, animations, beautiful world.  Key IMHO if the content stays just as good throughout the levels.

Did a HD video of playing, shows off a bit of what I'm talking about:
