Short review of Aion

S1GNALS1GNAL Member Posts: 366

Positive

- Good variety on customizing your character

- Good character movements and spell effects

Negatives

- The graphic looked wrong in a way. The character looked cut out and not integrated in the rest of the world.

- Some broken quests. Its a beta so ok, but it need to be pointed out so people do not run around for hours.

- Crafting did not work for my character. Gathering failed and failed after skill level 15, even thought I had enough skill.

- Some of the sound effects where annoying me, and some where good. It gets very irritating to listen to the same sound from the skill you use over and over at the lower levels.

- Would like more skills at lower level. Example, I found it faster to go melee with my priest than to use magic because of the white weapon damage.

What I look for in a new MMO, is great versatility in the choosing of Race/Class and looks. Also the character must feel alive in the world. World of Warcraft is a cartoonish MMORPG, but your cartoonish character feels integrated in the world you play. While Aion does not so well, it is far from the worst MMORPG I have tried.

My personal score 6/10

I am in no way attempting to flame your review, or you for that matter. But the game is live in both Korea and China, so it's not in the beta phase anymore, whichever client you were playing.

I found very few, if any, broken quests during my time ingame. I stopped in my mid-twenties. The game is running off a usermade english patch, the official translation will hopefully be completely different. This might help with any.. "vagueness" of the quest description.

I had no problems with crafting not raising.

Now, my only actual opinion about your opinion is, the characters looked great with the graphics maxed in how they blended into the atmosphere and game in general. The only time I got the feeling of them looking cut out was with something highlighted? Either way, maybe with the graphics lowered things change with how the game looks, but that wouldn't be a problem with the game, just computer.

    Good review.

    Agree with what Synthetick said.

But I'm gonna comment your remarks anyways since I'm bored...

     - The graphics are amazing, especially the lighting and stuff. And the art and design of both gameworld and characters is really beautiful. I sort of understand what could make you think the characters look weird though. Firstly they are even more detailed and better designed than the world, so that could make them stand out a bit. Secondly when you mouse-over a char it gets highlighted (or whatever you call it in English) which may make it look a bit cut out. That's what I felt after 10 mins of play, but stopped noticing it after that.

    - The game is live and not in a beta state at all. There are no flawed Asmodian quests up until level 20 at least, I did them all (doubt I even missed a single one). The English language patch is not official however, I don't know if it is fanmade or some early beta, but it is incomplete and flawed in many ways, maybe that's what you meant by broken.

    - Crafting works perfectly and the whole crafting system is really fun and engaging in my opinion. Raised Gathering, Alchemy and Weaponsmithing to 50+. You are not supposed to succeed everytime when doing something around your own skillevel. Thats sort of the whole point of having a craftingsystem where you can fail.. ;p

    - Sort of agree with you about the sound effects. The music ingame is magical and perfect. Most other sounds are really welldone as well. However the melee sounds when you hit an enemy it sounds like trains collide every hit, but you can turn down effects volume so problem solved...

    - Your last point is something I agree on. It needs more skills definitely. I'm not sure exactly how many skills you get at higher levels but at level 20 I had only two skillchains. It's not really enough. Hope it gets better later on.

Graphics don't look wrong for me. They looked perfect for the world. It depends on the person, you can view so many examples to find out if the tastes are good for you.

Have not seen a broken quest. What are you on about? I've finished every quest I could find... no comment about crafting, you obviously didn't try it enough. I don't like the crafting system as much either though.

(I have to disagree here, though graphics are a matter of opinion in the end. I have found that Aion has some of the best immersion I have experienced in a long time. I feel connected to my character who feels like a part of the world. The world is full of so many small details and living things to add a ton of life while your character is animated and emotive based on condition and environments.
The only thing I can think of is when you highlight say a quest giver they get an outline about them, this does not bother me but perhaps that is what you mean)?
    - Some broken quests. Its a beta so ok, but it need to be pointed out so people do not run around for hours.
(What level were you? I play on two servers, one as Elyos and one as Asmodian. I do all quests and yes, I even read all the quest texts. I have not encountered one broken quest as of yet. Using english patch some text can be cropped or look incorrect but this is due to it being a non offcial patch. Also what game version are you playing? China is only using V.1.0 where as Korea is using V.1.2 and NA release should be using the V.1.2 version.
    - Crafting did not work for my character. Gathering failed and failed after skill level 15, even thought I had enough skill.
(Crafting does work and works well! While on the newbie areas you use gathering for a few quests which advances you past skill level 15. Once you ascend then there are multiple gathering types and of course tradeskills. I am currently a cook and it works great and is a lot of fun. I know my guardian friend loves me for all the food I keep spamming his mailbox with.
I could be wrong, but, you only learn to craft once you ascend and can goto the trainers. Your saying you had a skill level of 15 which would be very low, possibly to low to even complete some of the iron gathering quests you do before you ascend. So I am confused how you say you only had gather skill of 15 but crafting did not work? Also you can fail a few times when gathering, just keep trying, not a given).
    - Some of the sound effects where annoying me, and some where good. It gets very irritating to listen to the same sound from the skill you use over and over at the lower levels.
(I think sound and music is one of Aions really high points, everything is well done and crisp. If you mean the thunk of a weapon hitting, clank of a shield blocking or the whir of a flame arrorw, well that is their sound effects and any good MMO you play has sounds effects that happen in combat. If there was no sound as you swung your sword it would make that swing feel very dull, weak and disconnected.
When I rolled a mage, I remember telling my friend how nice it wise that when I shot something with my flame arrorw, I really felt the power and oomph behind it which made it satisfying. Many games have you do some cool skill only to leave you hangin in the end.
The voices your character makes often could be toned down I guess but I does not bother me personally).
    - Would like more skills at lower level. Example, I found it faster to go melee with my priest than to use magic because of the white weapon damage.
( What level are you? I have a feeling you never leveled past the first few. As a priest, first starting out you get one damage spell, so yes you will time melee hits inbetween your casts. Again nothing new here as other popular MMOs are similar, ever played a Druid or Shaman in WoW? One spell off the bat and mixing in melee. As you progress you get melee skills as well. Remember as a priest you are not defined as cleric or chanter so you get skills that refelect each skill types.
So yea you mix in melee with your spells...how it is meant to be. Once you get around 9 I think it was, you get a chain skill, which is also melee based. So you may open up with ranged nuke, then melee ability, chain melee ability which also stuns, then nuke, cast a HoT. As you can see your doing a lot and prolly mixing in some white hits between casts to maximize damage output.
If you do not want to melee at all from the get go, roll a mage, they do not do much melee. Though, with my Spirit Master I will still at times hehe).

    My personal score 6/10
(Wow, pretty terrible score, a 6/10 is a failure of a game. Disagree big time with because I find Aion to be the best new MMO to launch since World of Warcraft. Now compating Aion NOW to WoW NOW, it is hard to say who is better, WoW has more content so gets a big nod, Aion is new with lots of room to grow. However if I took Early WoW and Aion now, Aion would take the cake.
Honestly for a MMORPG of this style, I have a hard time finding faults with Aion. I am not a fan boy and I was rather hesitant seeing NCsoft being involved. I was bored though and Aion was getting good positive hype. I caved, and decided to try the Chinese version.
Glad I did as now I know why Aion is so popular and praised, it is near perfect for me so far and with patch 1.2 and the voiceovers they are working on, it will only get much better. I say almost because if I try I can find minor faults or things I would like to see added but overall the game plays great, looks great, sounds great and most of all is just pure fun which is something MMOs have been missing the mark on for many years now).

Sorry you did not enjoy AION but honestly, a lot of your issues sound as if they are paticular to you and you alone and not the general populace playing the game. Also sounds like you never even got very far by many of your comments.

I don't see how you found meleeing better for a priest... at level 2 a priest can two shot everything of its level with its spell...

This game has more abilities low level than any other game I've played, including WoW.

I had no trouble gathering, I had my skill up to level 30 before I even became a Daeva.  It really is very easy just keep gathering the low level spawn points.

The characters seemed to fit very well into the world in my opinion too.

My gathering is up to 162p now and I get over 1k char. exp per mat gathered.  Each node will give 3 mat's, over 3k exp total.  Finding nodes now that give 6 mats (lvl35 area) also getting a lot more blue item mats ($$$).  Fail rate is high if the mat is the same lvl as my gathering skill but the odds increase when my gather skill increases higher than the mat in question.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

I'm playing nonstop since Open Beta (Kr) and fully agree with Sandblox. There is no need to add a single word more.

I respect your personal view S1GNAL, but my personal score for your review is 1/10 -> far from a true/fair review.

Anyways you should post 'till what level you were playing if you actually did it.
