Why in all creation do you need restrictive classes? That automatically just makes it another in a long line of Wow clones. Wake up and toss classes and levels. Those are for the weak of mind.
Restrictive classes? Bashing me because I don' prefer a skill based system who still has classes but disguised as skills? A WoW clone? UH NO!? Everquest was the first themepark thank you. WoW copied EQ and dumbed it down. But still, its not a clone of anything. Try reading the thread in the devs corner and try to comprehend it. It's far more complicated than Wow will ever be. I love to see your failed bashing. I see the color the blue and you see the color red, but you forget they are still a color. I am sure you can't figure that out either.
Well you were asking for opinions and that is what you get. Classes are for small minds with no imagination, the same with levels.

This statement just fails at its core. Try playing Dungeons and Dragons PnP and look at all of the classes/prestige classes and all the math and unique ideas that go into them and then...well you will probably say the same thing because 90% of people on here have this bullcrap pride issue when it comes to the internet and video games. I know more than you do about video games and that makes me cool! -_-
Wow! I like that idea a lot really! That has never occurred to me in that fashion. I do use Assassins in my game though. What you do describe most games do make the Rogue as an assassin. I can see Rogues being a huge support class! I do like that idea very much! Did you happen to read the thread in the dev corner? Would love to hear some feedback about how I did my Assassins. And will go in detail if you have any questions.
Dont get me wrong though, an assassin and a rogue can both exist in a world obviously. I just think the two are grossly different from one another and most games these days dont make that distinction because of the sudden wave of mediocre MMOs that have come out since 2004. Hate to use WoW because I seem like i'm bashing it a lot lately but anyway. The rogues in WoW are obviously not theives, when abilities like murder and murder spree, or somethin to that effect. Sure they tried to make them rogues at first by giving them pick pocket, sap, and pick lock. Aside from sap though...you really dont use any of the other rogue like abilities in the game. D&D deffinitly did rogues well by making them an essential part of the group. Discovering traps gives more xp and less death that the healer must cure as well as more treasure chests for more gold and picking locked doors for secret passages that can lead to who knows what. You dont have that in WoW so in most cases Rogues dont get much love and are shunned because their main role is DPS which other characters can do from a MUCH SAFER distance or control or do more of. My vote is bring thieves and rogues back into their actual role as in being a thief or a rogue not an assassin. Pull an EQ and put both in the game but make them incredibly different.
So I am an impatient bastard. I have posted my ideas on what the Holy Grail Mmo should be. It is posted in the Developers Corner. It is fantasy based. This is the type of game that should of came out after EQ was dying in 06. (Technically EQ started to die after Velious because of SOE so..) Anyways, It's called Twilight Mirage. I am confident enough to say that these ideas could potentially be the last good hardcore pve game left. And for those griefers, yes I do have some pvp. It is long, so take your time. All of it is easy to read and in summery form.
The audiences I would like to grasp for this mmo would be, old school EQ, DoaC, Ashron Call folks, possibly some Swg, wouldn't mind grabbing some Vanguard players and LoTRs players too. Trying to make a game for a certain niche instead of going after the large WoW subs. *Yes some WoW players may find this interesting as well* - (Have to please everyone)
The Key Points I think are strong with in that post are... - Three different types of combat - Spell Combo, Guard and Ranged - Classes - very in-depth and correctly made - Paths of Discipline - A twist on "end game" progression - Economy/Crafting - a kind of different approach, mostly player driven - World Maps - I have two of those
Another notable aspect I didn't go great detail, is the intriguing story line and how the world changes as the story progresses. I Hope some would adventure over there and take alook and post. I would like some feedback of what you do and don't like. Also willing to look at different perspectives on peoples opinions and willing to change to a certain degree.
You know you just described Vanguard as it is in it's current state not as it was at launch. I was about to give up on mmo's for good until I decided to give Vanguard one last try. WOW was I surprised! The game is incredible I never knew a game like it could exist today after WOW destroyed the future on MMO's. lol well they did ya know . Check it out.

When are you making your game? Do you have a planned release date?
No offense CeasarsGhost, but if the OP isn't making a game, and you are making a game that's crap, you're both in the same boat so the smugness would be unwarranted. I'm just sayin.

We are actually going to attemp the combat mechanics this summer. Going to be a stretch but I have faith we can get it working.
The holy grail of mmorpgs will only work once and then it starts to decline and something takes over (at least that is how I look at it).
Anyhow this kidna relates to the niche/mainstream thing that is in this forum right now, but the holy grail of mmorpg's will define the next niche. The present mainstream genre is WoW/EQ2 I think and that is the holy grail recipe. (for now). That will change as people tire of it and well I think we are just about there ..

Not really.

I can just see you sitting in front of your computer, crayolas laying all around you, as you draw your little fantasy world maps.
Cracks me up.

Tolkien started out with crayon maps of Middle Earth. And if the maps don't turn out well you can always eat the crayons.
