Op has listed only large scale commercial games.  Of course they're gunning for mass market releases and appeasement.

Try a few free indie mmorpgs.  They're forced to stay alive solely on their entertainment value.

I'm awaiting a big release so decided to horse around in a few free games.  I'm actually rather impressed and forgetting all about the blockbuster.

    LineageII | LoTRO | RFO | 9Dragons | Aion | Perfect World | Ether Saga | Dungeon Runners | GuildWars 1 and 2 | Hellgate London | tCoS | Warhammer | AoC | Tabula Rasa | SWTOR

    This is a good observation.
There's always been a vocal minority who despise mainstream themepark MMOs and want a game with niche elements such as FFA PvP, non class/level based progression .. and the reason that these people will never be happy is because they have the caveat that said game must have a recognised IP, a 2009 cutting-edge graphical engine, be released (bug-free) by a top-notch development company like Bioware or Blizzard, and have a development price-tag in the $100m range.
Oh, and it must not deviate from their personal vision of what makes the perfect game.
I smirk every time I see someone complain about the lack of sandbox FFA-PvP games. When you suggest that they try EVE, (which is in my opinion the finest sandbox FFA-PvP title ever made), they scoff and whine that the avatar is a spaceship and not a half-naked barbarian chick.
From a personal perspective, I'm very glad that MMOs are shifting focus. They're becoming entertainment products designed for (and marketed to) people who play games for fun. The "old-school" image of the MMO genre as a proving ground for angry nerds to prove their virtual superiority is thankfully a thing of the past.

Where is all the good food?

Seems like all the food out there taste like garbage now.

People hyped up fois gras, Norwegian salmon, etc., and now what, apparently they aren't too good, and won't end pancakes..

What happened to hardcore food like raw meat? Are they gone? Are chefs just sellouts nowadays that will try to copy pancakes' model and appeal to people with no taste?

It's really sad that there isn't any food out there that is like tartar steak were, there was no just-roll-and-eat crap like with pancakes where you just keep adding jam to make it taste well, and then you go to the same French creperie over and over with no risk/losses except travel. And the food fights are non-existant with newer food, it's like you can't ruin any clothes from food fight so there is no excitement in it. Pancake food fights are just spoonfuls of jam where all you lose is a cleaning bill. What happened to real food fights over meaningful things such as really messing up people's silk shirts, etc.? It seems like all these things are gone from newer food.

Real fucking sad... And it looks like Blizz is gonna make another horrible food (which will probably be popular too) based on waffles. I hope it is hardcore so the game is actually enjoyable unlike trivial kiddy food like pancakes

(Just making the point that it's about taste... :-p)

It's really sad that there aren't any games out there that aren't like EQ was, there was no Autopilot crap like in WoW where you just keep doing quests to level up, and then you farm the same instance over and over with no risk/losses except time.  And the PvP is nonexistant in newer MMORPGs, it's like you can't lose anything from PvP so there is no excitement in it.  WoW PvP is just instanced arenas where all you lose is worthless rating.  What happened to real PvP over meaningful things such as control of zones for raids, etc.?  It seems like all these things are gone from newer MMOs.

Guys! I know this is gonna same lame but I have recently discovered a really good game and despite what you may think It is Trur MMO gamers last hope. That game is Vanguard! I have played virtually every mainstream MMO over the last 10 years or so and I didn't know a game like this even existed anymore. The game is being run by SOE right now and they are idiots for not realizing this game's potential. I was about to give up for good on MMO's until I decided to re-sub. Hadn't played it since the horrible launch. So glad I did. Check it out you won't be dissapointed if you are looking for something with a bit more depth in community and unique gameplay elements. Free trial available........No pvp but the PvE is spectacular. 4 spheres of advancement, adventuring, crafting, harvesting, diplomacy, and fishing. You will be amazed at the depth this game goes. Felt so good to get killed so many times for not thinking before I even hit lvl 10. It takes a prety good computer to run it like it is meant to run but I do fine with this old amd 3800+ singlecore w/Geforce 9500GT card! So the requirements can't be that bad. Bought a new computer just so my wife could play it to. If SOE ever fucks this game up I will be done with MMO's for good! Nuff said!

I dont know about ultra hardcore but i played Aion chinese open beta till level 37 and its really not solo friendly. i was an assasin which is decently durable if played right and i found my ass getting handed to be time and time again. But when i met some people it was a blast and the 3 of us leveled pretty decently. Assassin, Chanter, and a gladiator is a good combo.

I so cant wait till it comes out in NA.

    • Level-up
    • Gear-up
    • Raid-up
    • Gear-up
    • Cash-up
    • Swallow Pride

This system is total disaster when it comes to the very LIFE of an MMORPG community.  We are in a commercialized virtual world rat race to level-up to gear-up while we cash-up.

Innovation, my theory, is our tool.  Our cure.

Vanguard is a pretty looking game that has saved my mmo life (curse the game). But its n o t running good on modern compture. When I try to run the game on the settings that is shown in the vidoes I cant say that I get a stable fps. Even if Ive a top of the line compture with a 4870x3 graphic system. Ive even tried to run the game with a 295 card but its n o t running fine.

Where on earth did you get the idea that Blizz is making a Starcraft MMO? They've already announced in the press that their upcoming MMO is a totally new property, not Diablo, WoW, or Starcraft lore.  If you're referring to Starcraft II....it's NOT an MMO, it's RTS, just like the original.

And you're complaining about PvP lacking, but ask where the games are like EQ??  Uhm....that makes no sense at all.

Not one other video game comes even close. Even complete franchised series games  (like Pokemon) don't make the same amount of money this SINGLE gaming world delivers.

And you have a different opinion.
    O Wow :))))

     <Mod Edit>

Creeping Jesus man you need to calm down. It's like WoW or Blizzard as an entity has just kicked sand in your face and run of with your girlfriend. It's a game, and you don't like it. Big. Fucking. Deal. It's not the Anti-Christ, it's a fucking computer game. It's not out to single handedly ruin your enjoyment of life, it's a fucking computer game.

Get things in perspective. It's about time some of the self professed "Hardcore" crowd (and anyone that delcares themselves "hardcore" about what computer games they play is a massive tool) realised that most people don't want to spend 6 hours straight grinding or camping a certain mob.

It's a game, not a 2nd job, and it certainly shouldn't be the best and most interesting thing you have going on in your life.

Holy mother of fuck wad this thread contains so much fail. WoW op, you have issues!

You should get over the fact that games like WoW are insanely popular because they are fucking FUN. Drivel like the shite you spewed those shitty games arent popular anymore because people have the choice of playing something FUN.

    PEOPLE LIKE FUN

    PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE SHIT

PEOPLE WILL CHOOSE FUN OVER SHIT

EXCEPT YOU. YOU SEEM TO LIKE SHIT. CANT WORK OUT WHY

Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!

I'm just want to state a little opinion here:

well I think that WoW has been already few years (4? 5? I forgot), but within these years, why there aren't still a developing team can develop another mainstream MMO?

I mean like yes WoW is good, to be true, but come on guys !!  There must be SOMEONE that can come out with some new stuffs !!! =p

    Where is that GUY?? !!

Balance makes absolutely no fucking sense at all in an MMORPG.  MMORPG = Time / Skill investment.  Who in their right mind wants to invest their own time into something if their own character is going to be the same as some newbie who plays once a year?
Really, the whole balance thing is ridiculous, its an MMO ffs.  Let it be unbalanced.

Anyway, the overpowered gear is an incentive to PvE.  The non instanced zones would encourage PvP.  Clearly if PvE didnt affect PvP (a "balanced" MMO), then what incentive is there to PvP?  Worthless Honor points?

And btw, name one MMO that is balanced... WoW certainly isnt balanced.  I can't take a trash geared level 80 and beat someone wearing the best gear in the game.  How is that balanced?  It's still unbalanced, just not as unbalanced as some other games.  But then again there is no incentive for real PvP in WoW because everything is instanced.  And the PvP is boring because it's fake and you go into some instanced zone where you fight each other and lose nothing and gain nothing except honor / arena points..

If you really think balance only belongs to strategy games, I hope you never develop any games. Last time I checked all classes in WoW can do pretty much all roles, so if one excels at a task, you can say "it's more fit for it" (like warriors tanking), balance is hardly a problem when you provide players the same options under different names.
