Standard EQ/DAoC/WoW clones are never going away

Classes, levels, loot, gear, quests and camping, these are never going away, so quit asking devs not to make these games anymore.

It's like asking developers to stop making First Person Shooters. It's not going to happen.

There will always be a new generation of players taht will want to play the classic MMO-RPG  with levels, gear, loot, quests, raiding, PvP with RPG style combat (not l33t twitch skillz). And developers will alaws make games for these people, just like they will always make FPS games and RTS games, and single player RPGs.

You want something different? You want some bastardization between an FPS and an MMORPG? You want something more like a sandbox? That's fine. But it doesn't mean the standard MMO-RPG has to die, or that developers shouldn't make any more games like this. And the saem thing goes for the fantasy genre. Developers are going to make more fantasy games, there will always be a market for them.

The point is simple. It doesn't have to be either/or. It's ok to request more games taht are outside the normal standard MMORPG design, but it doesn't make sense to rail against developers for making these kinds of games too. Again, it would be like asking developers not to make First Person Shooters anymore.

Yea, The whole MMO industry was based on MUds which were based on D&D from the 70's/80's. There were levels, loot, gear, quests back in those days, I see no reason to expect that to change.

However, I wouldnt mind seeing a change to the tank/healer/dps mechanic.

I'm totally cool with the traditional EQ/DaOC/M59 foundation, those were the games I had the most fun playing. I have yet to see anyone make a game as good as any of those at release unfortunately. Thats all I'm looking for.

WoW is it's own entity and I don't think anyone even wants a copy of it because(if you dig theme park questing) WoW has that style down cold.

I disagree. Blizzard is closing the spigot. MMO companies are gonna have to start finding their own playerbases. Whats available now or in production is all there ever will be. Thats my prediction. I'm never right though.

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Speaking as a WoW player; I would welcome WoW 2.0.
While I enjoy the themepark quest-based nature of WoWs core gameplay, I accept that the game has flaws and could benefit from a contemporary upgrade to add modern elements such as collision detection and more up-to-date graphics.
As I detest the "new game experience" approach whereby developers fundamentally change a game under the guise of "updating" it, I'd love to see WoW 2.0 as a new standalone project rather than an "upgrade".

Please refer me to a DAoC clone. I'd love to play it with updated graphics, movement, and no TOA.

*raises hand*  Same here. I think a DAoC clone (and WAR was not it)  would appeal to a lot of players.
