After five days, i feel really feel like I have a grasp on the controls and my character movement and combat styld. I put in some good skill points into two handed sword, bow and lesser magic. I had a quest to kill Trolls and get their blood using skinning. I made several attempts to complete this quest and I almost got close, I had two troll bloods at one time. But as of late, the ganking has increased. I died several times at the hand of a superior opponent. I fought hard but to no avail. Soon after several attempts to complete this quest, I was left with nothing but my starter staff from all the ganking and looting. Sure, I could go finish the quest naked, but I don't get any skill gains naked with my magic, melee or bow. I logged off for a few hours to see if the maybe it was a timing thing. I absolutely could not get anything done today from the ganking.
I logged back in later and tried again. This time I went back to the Goblins to get some gold and loot and replenish what I had lost. I also did some resource gathering to sell for gold as well. This was not successful, the ganking was still going on and I lost about 200 mining resources. I found myself bored of this repittion in dying so I turned to the new guild I had joined. After all they sounded like on vent they were having fun. They weren't very hepful and I couldn't figure out where they were in the world or how to get there. So I decided to just do some explorying. Darkfall afterall looks huge. I wondered around the lands and was impressed with the strange castles and ruins. I wondered what all the scattered stuff was, but there is no lore to be found. I found a few creatures, some I could kill, some I could not. There seemed to be no way of knowing which ones were weaker and stronger. I found a nice isolated stream and started doing some fishing. I noticed accross the stream, a fellow alliance player was chopping wood. Soon I heard the sound of battle and the guy accross the stream was dying to 3 players on mount. I moved into a bush on the ground and the riders didn't spot me. I was impressed of this newly discoverd hiding ability. I survived. I had loads of fish on me. I started back towards town, but this time the riders saw me and mowed me down. It was a quick way back to town. I logged off after this. I wasn't a pleasent session at all. I don't think I accomplished anything. Well maybe a point or so in defense skills from the ganking I was taking. I problably won't log in tomorrow night. Right now I don't feel like playing for a while. I kinda wasted an evening. So will see. I am sure I will play again, but not for a while. I do like the hardcore of the game, but I would also like a fighting chance. I am going to leave my guild and see if I can find a more helpful guild. I probably won't post anymore impressions, unless something more positive occurs.

Sounds like gangrape syndrome to me..
I've felt like this many times in the game, but I find that taking a step back to doing the simple things gets me caught up real quick.
What I mean by that is to start back in the easier areas first, you'll find that you'll get back all your things very quickly. The hiding skills that you just learned will come in real handy fast. It just helps to change the pace a little.
The first time I lost a full set of banded that I had scraped together, I felt pretty pissed off too. But I went back, and did some of the easier mobs again and it made me feel better. I saved up and got back my banded set in a day or so. The second time, I lost a banded set and a mount on a pvp run, I was so annoyed, I decided to take a break from pvp. I went exploring and swam out into the ocean, I discovered some cool islands. Then on this one island, I found this parked raft on this beach that these 3 guys had left, so I stole it.
I find that if you keep at it the game will give you back the things you lost and even more as you gain skill.
OP i hope you learn something, if u are mining bank often
BestSigEver :P
You know, its not the loot I lost. It was all crap, stuff from the Goblins. What I don't like is wasting several hours with zero accomplishment. I am tired of thesestarter areas, I wan't to play the bigger part of the game that everyone talks about. But I haven't found that yet. Maybe i will just be Cain and walk the earth in search of inner meaning (in game of course).
there are easy monsters near every city...i suggest moving away from the starter areas, i did so and ive only got pked twice this week
You can see where your guildies are by the green G's moving around the map
Can we have our raft back?
About the raft...ROFL.
The OP talks a lot aboit "me and me". It would be nice to read "we, we" instead. You will always be outnumbered if you are alone. get some friends, and do it fast. maybe not a clan, but just some other noobs or something. You will se the (DF) world in a completely new way when you have six friends with you.
And remember you can use the /bindstone_recall to get home with nice loot : )
I will give you few tips, free of charge.
Next when you login in I want you to change your attitude.
Forget about quests that's not theme park, they add quests from time to time but believe me except timed quests to kill specific mobs they are not really worth time invested in them.
1. Scout around staring cities with a starting weapons, maybe some arrows, a bow and a magic staff from goblins. Find a semi safe spawn of goblins, kobolds, trolls, skeletons, zombies or orcs. Sometimes their spawns are close to a starting town or a wilderness bank, maybe even with a guarding tower. Those places will be often full of other people like you, don't get upset when somebody loot your mob, do same on his. ALWAYS skin your mob standing on his tomb. Train skinning it provides you will skinning mats, important source of profit in DF. Try to not get below 50 % of HP and stamina when you fight, mind your surandings watch for PK and agressive players. If you fight alone try to eat before fight, it will speed up your health and stamina regeneration to same rate when you sit on the ground and rest ! If you pvp always eat, use potions as well. To get food fish and cook fish.
This map will be MUCH helpful:
www.afraidyet.net/forums/misc.php
2. Harvest iron ore and timber, fish to get food.
When harvest have your eyes and ears open. Look around from time to time. Switch off the music in game and focus on sounds of danger: footsteps, fighting, mounts. Rest when you have 50 % of stamina left.
Get a mount as soon as possible it will rise your chances to escape dramatically. It costs around 300 gold. You can try to harvest steegrass from bushes and caft it by yourself.
Plan your escape route before your chose a node to harvest, your node should be in quite place preferably in open, no huge obstacles which would make it easier to sneak on you. Resources nodes around towns are not - despite common opinion - the safest opens. Try to fin a places away from PK raids. Remember to always dispawn your mount and place it figurine on your toolbar for fast access. If you will let them come in archery range use terrain, trees, rocks to hide from their arrows.
Iron ore and timber sell good and provide you with materials for your own arrows, weapons and armor. Get a clan with a decided carfters, you will know it is a good clan if crafters will be happy to make you weapons, armor mounts for free, if you provide them with mats and gold needed to craft. Buy leather from vendor it is cheap, especially with a new character.
3. Bank often. It is up to you to decide when it is a risk/reward game afterall. If you don't have a mount it is better to ./bindstone_recall then run back to a town/bank.
4. Focus on your character development, gathering resources
- decide what weapon do you want to use, the most useful in pvp are: polearms and two handed swords, they applied some changes in the latest patch but they are still the best pvp options. Always try to carry back one hander and shield for easy blocking and mount fighting.
Focus yourself on using one type of: 2 h weapon , one type of 1 h weapon and archery. If you don't have a clan maybe it is time to invest some money in crafting skil ? It is only 500 g after all and it will be easier to get some cheap weapons and armor then buy it from others.
Train your lesser magic, use heal self ( maybe the magic shield spell as well, but it needs nacre to cast ) as often as you can. Remember after last patch you need to hit a valid target with magic, arrows to skill up. Lesser magic up to level 50 is necessary for everybody you will get mana to stamina spell.
5 PvE
Goblins later kobolds are the best for training archery, gold. Kobolds skin for teeth, quartz ( you can sell them on the market or leave for yourself, tooth is one of main ingridients in alchemy's potions ) and you can get a repeatable quest for them to boost your income.
Trolls, orcs are the best for gold and regents. You can combine troll hunt with repeatable quest as well. Orcs skin for hearts very useful ingridient in making the best in-game alchemy potions - you need hears, teeth and blood for health and stamina potions. You can get blood from flying snakes - another easy mob.
6. Ask question here or in the game to learn more.
Hang on did not Tasos say they were plenty of oppotunities for solo players to go .. "off the grid"... due the to "huge" world ?
I vote this as the first ever lie about DF gamplay. Methinks he just wants the subsriptions and is hoping to break even in the utter nuts venture of his.

dunno what the problem is... gankers attack gankers after all...
5. Have any steps been taken to ease the meat grinder effect on new players as they enter the Darkfall world?
Let's assume for the sake of argument that there's an area in Darkfall where "lowbie hunters" like to camp for newbs. Most of the time, these individuals or groups will end up fighting each other. In Darkfall you're never sure how advanced or new a player is since we have no levels.
Furthermore, in Darkfall, starting players are not helpless and can defend themselves well enough, and in groups they can discourage people from preying on them. There are guards in starting areas providing protection. There are guards in clan cities if the new players are in a clan. There's an invulnerability period of several minutes after death as long as the player doesn't perform an action. The world is truly huge so it's very easy to avoid people, especially with the lack of radar.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Here we ago again.. guys look it's an endangered fanboy^.. yes they are bound to extinction very soon..
OP is a guy that comes from a safe computer-controlled and segmented ecosystem where there is no player-driven influence and into a player-driven ecosystem where the tactics and strategy of game-play are completely unpredictable and different.
Perhaps there is some extra whine in there, but anyone can play this game and get attacked at any time, so being disappointed in a free-of-predictable and open environmentally player-focused game is absolutely no surprise.
The surprise is that someone would actually post a message about getting pulled into combative and competitive situations, well, in a combative and competitive game.
^^^ Yeah what he said....
BTW just WTF did he say?????
"If you were as smart as you think you are, you would realize that you are an idiot"
I have mixed feelings about this post. On one hand, it's a full PvP game and dying should be expected. On the other hand, it does suck to feel like you haven't accomplished anything after hours of play. I felt like that after the latest patch when Aventurine was kind enough to recall me, without my consent, back across the entire continent to my bindstone instead of letting me log in where I logged out. It pissed me off. I keep hearing that this is a sandbox game, but I also hear that in order to really "experience" the game, you have to join a clan and play with them. That's contradictory to the whole sandbox mentatlity. In a true sandbox, anybody should be able to do just about anything. If I want to set up a farmstead, I should be able to and I should be able to employ some hirelings to protect it. Granted, somebody could still kill them, but doing so should have consequences, unless their of an opposing alliance. The hirelings should provide some defense, though. If a player of the same alliance kills my hirelings, they should be flagged rogue, just as if they had killed me. Of course, all this is moot, since none of it exists...
Case in point, this morning I did some more exploring and found a completely empty clan hamlet, at which I could do pretty much nothing. I couldn't steal anything from their unprotected bank. I didn't have a siege hammer, so I couldn't start knocking down walls, I don't belong to a clan, so I couldn't declare a war against them (if I could, it would give them a 4 hour window to prepare), etc.... So, basically, I wandered into an empty village and couldn't do squat. That's entertainment... I should have been able to kill their NPCs (or at least die trying), break into their bank, set fire to their buildings, etc..., I shouldn't have to be in a clan in order to do any of these things (some of which you can't do, like rob the bank, even if you're in a clan). If the empty hamlet belonged to my race/alliance, there should be consequences to my actions (except maybe robbing their bank, if I'm a good thief - how would they know it was me?). If it belonged to another faction, I should get alignment points for causing mayhem there.

FFA PvP doesn't have to mean senseless killing.
That's what DFO is though.
It's FFA RvR and I think that's a mistake; especially when you allow ARAC.
There's no reason for the RvR part. You get nothing for killing members of an apposing race. If your in a clan that's at war with another clan you don't even get alignment if the person you killed is an enemy race.
It felt a lot like they weren't really sure what direction they were headed at one point, and then couldn't figure out how to make the mechanics they had into something more cohesive.
The RvR part is counter to the sandbox mentality as well.
The game has already decided for you that another player is the enemy and that you should kill him.
A true sandbox would have put the lore and story behind the races into the game, built a sence of annimosity between the races through the lore and story, and then left it up to the players to decide who thier enemy was.
Either make it FFA with ARAC clans.
Or make it RvR with FFA within your own race, and NO ARAC clans.
It's easy
Sounds good, but the game is not ready yet, give it six months to two years.
That's the bottom line !
In 3 months Df will be F2P; in a year from now, they will shut down the servers.
Crap game is crap, no matter how you tweak it.
He gave some reasons why DF is soon losing another sub.
lore? story?
does anyone have any links to an official darkfall anything that contains the lore and story?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
let me guess, human? make an elf, ganker problem fixed. or just move to thier cities and do thier quests, but might be a mission to get there unscathed.
My blog:
OP just free and very helpful advice: next time you'll find yourself in the middle of nowhere with some valuables, just find any water (sea, lake, river, pool), get there and log out. Next time you'll log in by your bindstone...
lore? story?

Whatchu talkin bout?
There's lots of lore in the game. I mean a dwarf told me to kill three orks, obviously orks are my enemy. Thier names are even red now! That's lore.
Every brand new player is supposed to instintively know that, right? Aventurine needs to do something to dramatically improve the new player experience. As an example, I created a brand new character last night. Since I'm not going to re-sub, I have no vested interest in the character I've been playing the last few weeks, so it was easy to just delete him and start over. I got my starter quests and headed to the nearest goblin spawn:
So, within my first 1/2 hour on my new character, I got PKed twice, wasn't able to gain any skill points and wasn't able to loot anything. Only the fact that I had any experience with the game (knew to look for goblins near town, knew they had huge aggro range and that I'd have to be careful since no other players were around to draw aggro) at all made it even slightly enjoyable, otherwise, I would have been even more frustrated with it than I already was. All-in-all, as a new player experience, it sucked.
After healing up, I decided to leave town in a different direction and find another spawn. I did, and it was close to town, but it was a much harder spawn due to their being goblin fighters and shamans, not just scouts. Once again, there weren't any other players there (at first), so I had to pull, hide, etc.., painstakingly slow, one at a time, run buack, rest to heal, run out to loot, etc... It was doable, but tedious. Another player did come in after a while, but he tried to crouch inside my melee range while I was swinging at goblins, so I just let him get killed. I'd completed one of my two starter missions, but still had yet to see a single goblin axe for my second. It wasn't until a couple of hours later (yes, hours) that other players came and I was able to fight more openly, loot a staff, start training mana missile and heal self before I finally found my four axes and could complete both quests.
Eventually, I was able to loot some gear, get about 100 gold coins, level up some skills and complete my two quests, but it took several hours, total, two PKs and reliance upon other players being in the area to draw aggro in order to do so. I'm ok with FFA Loot, PvP, and PK'ing, but should the new player experience be this hard, even for an experienced player? New players should be encouraged to play further, not repelled.

Why would you do that when you can just type /bindstone_recall and be ported back to your bindstone whith your valuables at any time?
Make a difference!
When a game pronounces itself as a hardcore experience, it should not necessarily mean you need to die 100 times before you know what to do in the game.
They should improve their NPE (new player experience) with quest chains even give a new character protection, that lasts for X hours (I haven't played the game so I have no idea how much that X should be) which would mean they can't be attacked. This way the game could be appealing to those that are not used to free pvp or to those that got the wrong idea that FREE PVP = GANKLAND.
And yes, most peopel do not enjoy when they can't enjoy their new player experience, it's like, you get the wrong idea of the game as I'm pretty sure that if it's a huge game world, finding others on remote places should be rare, getting ganked even more rare. That's not the case on starting areas, and ganking people who just started to play... that's so mature.
